Dev blog: Black Desert Online makers Pearl Abyss to acquire CCP!

I’ve been through acquistions in the past (both on the giving and receiving side ). Normally the vernacular goes a bit like this
“this is a strategic move for the organisation”
“significant benefits and new opportunities for all”
etc etc

Typically what really happens is this

Borg Acquisition

I’m not saying they won’t, of course they will, bottom line, it’s theirs to do as they wish, it is totally up to us if we stay.

Why have a firesale when you can donate it all to me…

The Koreans will carefully watch and siphon know-how for the coming months and then make their calls. They do want to grow EvE online, and make their investment back. And we all know what way you have to go, in order to significantly grow EvE and make it super profitable …

… also Hilmar is a rich man now and not invested in the company anymore, just an ordinary employee of PA. How long do you think, he will keep fighting for EvE how it is now?

The paradox, I don’t fear EvE is dying, but one day having millions of players …

If CCP didn’t cater to a small percent of griefers they’d have more players. They will have to severely nerf wardecs and suicide ganking

For new EVE to arise, the old must die.

We will see on new years eve.

After reading Nozygamer’s blog and thinking of it all, I can see two opions:

  • first as i suggested, publicly trading CCP
  • second use CCP’s IP to develop new games and dip their toes in the massive Chinese mobile MMO market

That is, they haven’t bought EVe, they’ve bought CCP, of which EVE is a kind of milk cow, but they’re thinking of the greater potential to develop new stuff into new markets. CCP actually haves expertise in operating a MMO in China, and probably the Shanghai office is gonna get a lot of South Korean visitors in the future.

PA might not be as interested in EVE’s puny 250-300 k players as with CCP’s know-how to tap into China’s 800,000,000 smartphones user base. And mind you: Asian mobile games market is completely different than Western market, and Hilmar already said last Fanfest that one of their goals was to tap into the mobile strategy MMO market in Asia. We might think Porject Aurora is a wreck, but it’s been developed by an Asian developer for a mostly Asian audience. And whatever money it makes, it’s gonna be PA’s, and not CCP’s (since you bet ti’s gonna be published by PA).

As Nozy says, PA bought three brand new games (Nova, Aurora and Galaxy) with serious potential in their home market. And who knows… maybe the financial objectives are focused on Nova, not EVE.

“IfF Nova fares better than benchmarks X, Y, Z on its first year, you’ll get this bonus”. :woman_shrugging:

Right now my mood is like this:

And my feelings about the acquisition are: 60% indifferent 25% concerned 10% hurt 5% hopeful.

Maybe in the middle range PA will force CCP to deprioritize EVE and focus into the real deal of new games, but also they could achieve this by moving studios to London and free CCP’s new projects from the Iceland curse. This way Reykjavik would become the EVE HQ as CCP expanded into greener pastures. And here’s my 5% of hope…

It wouldn’t be because null sec income is out of balance to high sec income, where high sec has been for the most part nerfed, while null has been repeatedly buffed…
No of course not.
If ever a change that happens to hurt null or benefit high happens it’s because they are making the game a theme-park, it could never be anything to do with returning to the old balance between areas of space where all had an advantage in some type of isk making activity, and all areas depended on each other…

I mean seriously, you are wearing tin foil and setting yourself up here to be able to cry foul no matter what they do.

Yes I suspect the upcoming projects will weight more into PA revenue than EVE itself.I sincerely hope they do great just so CCP can develop and grow as a company

Very good post but you have one bussines error, PA is not Publisher, PA is DEVELOPER and main publisher is KAKAO GAMES ( 카카오게임즈 ) which is subsidiary of Asian Internet/Mobile **behemoth ** KAKAO ( 주식회사 카카오 ) .

Please do not simplfy those bussines relations beacuse it is very important in Asia Market.
FYI: Tencent have 13.54% of KAKAO

While that’s true it’s not the same as the usual pay shop items that are inaccessible by people who don’t pay. That and Titans can be destroyed, pay items normally just stay on the character in a typical mmo after death.

Geez, I take a break for one day and you guys decide to sell the game.

Out of curiosity, how big is the share of Korean players in EVE right now? I don’t hear a lot about them.

Sorry bro but you’re using the wrong terminology. The Dev’s didn’t remove ganking from the recent Abyss event, that option has always been available in high sec space.

What they removed was the Suspect Flag that made anyone exiting a level 4 and 5 Abyss pocket in high sec space a legal target. CCP invested a lot of time and resources to create that content and players weren’t really engaging in it because of that flag. The reason for removing it was to encourage players to engage in that content which, in my opinion, was a very good decision.
