Devblog: Skillpoints, Cash & New Players – An Update

I get it, and you are right, once you give something to someone you can’t get it back. I am more happy that they are trying to help new players, not so much by handing out 1M SP but whatever. In the scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. 5,10,20 Million, let them ask.

As a newer players, Im not even sure if I wanna keep investing in the game to play, companies need increased revenue each quarter/yearly to even stay open an active, seeing as the game is as old as it is. How much more life does Eve have left in it. Can u guarantee me 20 more years of gameplay, an will u do what most older games are doing an create another server, to pull in old an new players?

Ok, though I would be considered an experienced gamer in many respects, I am new to EvE online.

How do I get this starter pack so I can put it on my first character?

Retention is and always will be an issue but it is not a PA, CCP or EVE issue.

It is people. They see the reviews:
EVE is all scammers and gankers

But they come anyway. Who knows why. Then they get ganked or war deced or bumped or scammed and they leave. Some come to the forums to whine and try to change EVE to WOW, then they leave.

It’s not even a bad thing for EVE, it is a good thing, non-target audience customers come, spend money, entertain EVEs real customers and leave.

I call it The River Fodder, for CCP it is a nice cash bonus.

So, new player retention is a problem?
I am not surprised.

Though I have just started playing EvE; I have already been ‘ganked’ several times.

New players do not enjoy being preyed upon by veteran players.

If I were a designer, I would think about providing a means mining or cargo ships could equip to combat warships without advertising it to the players who may attack them.
This would be the age-old process commonly referred to as ‘Q-ships’.

I would make available (perhaps thru ship’s rigs) weapon/defense capabilities that would ‘cost’ cargo/hold space that warships simply would not have available.
these ‘extras’ would be usable mostly for defense.
I can envision enterprising players would attempt to ‘gank’ with them, the rigs should be usable to new/mining-prone players.

3 % of the PC gaming market in 2018 would be 1 Billion US $… I am pretty sure CCP would be more than happy with that.

Also… can you somehow proof this “fact”?

That would be impossible for any game…or anything else, really…

These already exist and have done for a long time, at least 2 of the T1 haulers can be made into formidable opponents, in the right hands, with some out of the box thinking, and 2 of the larger mining vessels are formidable opponents right out of the box.

How do you prevent vets from just using this to their own advantage? The problem has always been, that whatever overpowered thing is given to “help” new players is just abused by vets anyway. This exact thing even happened with this introduction pack.

The game should not artificially keep players from making dumb stuff, like taking their bestower into lowsec. Instead, it should properly explain how exactly the game mechanics work and how to properly manage their assets, meaning don’t fly what you cannot affort to lose. Give players the knowledge of how the game works, but let players make their own decisions.

I am all for CCP making money, its a business! And I’m really happy they are focusing on new player retention. These are two things that are necessary for Eve to continue. Honestly more needs to be done for new player retention. Having to wait weeks or months just to play what you want to play is a huge turn off for some, and not that we have to cater to the instant gratification seekers, but we can come up with solutions that help people get to where they want to play without making them wait so long.

You know that 150M+ SP characters were using this, too, right?

not only this, but if you start new characters out with higher SP it just makes it faster/easier for the SP farmers to increase their farms… not that it seems to be much of an issues anyway, but the vets that have learned how to min/max the systems will always find a way to abuse them when it comes to things like these.

We also should have spoken with the CSM regarding this pack before we released it. That one’s on me…

You don’t owe anyone an explanation or apology. If whiners are complaining so loud, maybe you did it right the first time. So sick of the babies in this game. HTFU!

DeMichael Crimson raises his hand

Oh wait, I’m currently piloting an Interceptor, it’s T2 but it’s still a Frigate.

:expressionless:

CCP makes money shock horror burn them with fire now. Come on people there is nothing wrong with buying plex - Injectors - DLC hell I want to see ccp extend this to people who spend real cash to sub come on ccp

From previous post which someone found offensive

I’ve been spending $131.00 per account over 16yrs- ish works out to be around $2500min over that time never once did I get something free when I subed other then ripped off 5days per yearly subed cause ccp see 1 year to be 360 days not 365 pffft ccp maths again is awesome maths.

The older players are from a different generation, the new players keep saying EVE takes to long, everyone wants something now in this time and age. CCP has a right to attract new players and pay it’s bills and keep new blood coming to EVE, as most of you old farts are getting married or dying off. what happens when your 20 is different then what happens when your 40.

I’ve been involved off and on since 2009, the cry baby attitude “if I had to do it, the world has to do it” is bull

I seen when 50,000 plus players would be logged in, now during week maybe 18,000.

This is a game, at some point in time it will end and if we start crying and the amount of new players do not balance the old retiring or what ever, it will die. At that point all your time skilling up means nothing, so give CCP a break and let them explore options.

Hell, half you old players play other games instead of EVE when your on Discord or in your corp chat/comms.

We are not in Kansas anymore, we are in a world of I want it now not later… FACT…

Stop whining…

Industrial freighter ships generally don’t “fight back”, they flee. The first way they survive attacks is by hopefully having enough shield tanking to survive a gank attempt until concord can arrive. That means using active defense field extenders, adaptive invulnerability fields, and one defense field extender on the mid slots, core defense extenders in the rig slots, and one damage control module in a low slot. It is good practice to try and get as much thermal and kinetic resistance as possible as the ship of choice among many gankers is a Catalyst equipped with Void S or Antimatter ammo. These do a massive amount of damage if fired all at once, but their guns take 10 seconds before they can fire again. The idea is that pretty much all shields that can be fit on a t1 hauler are useless against a single Catalyst alpha strike without resistance to damage type.

The second way they survive attacks is to be able to align and warp as quickly as possible. This is where skills such as Evasive Maneuvering and Inertial Stabilizers in the low slots come into play. this essentially makes you less of a target because it gives gankers less time to scan your ship down and decide whether you are worth shooting or not. There are other things too such as warp core stabilizers and using the microwarp drive + cloak trick.

With mining vessels my advice is to stay out of low sec, find a quiet system in high sec with low traffic and ship kills, get a retriever and focus on common ores and max yield per cycle at the expense of tanking, insure it, and get as much ore as you can as fast as you can. Try and stay far away from trade hubs, especially Jita. Watch local for traffic spikes, check d-scan occasionally to see who is around you, and if a ship pulls up on grid that you don’t recognize dock up quick. 10 cargoholds full of ore taken back to station will easily buy you a new ship if you get ganked.

Of course this barely scratches the surface of how to stay alive in New Eden. I will say this in conclusion though. Never, ever, fly any ship on autopilot. Never.

you guys have to look more into the history of the korean holding company … ccp is long dead… P2W is what they do the best in their games …lol

When are you guys going to learn to ask the CSM before you do stuff? Especially when you’re breaking previous, dare I say, promises.

You make this mistake repeatedly and I’m sure nearly all of the CSM would have protested.

Another issue I havent seen pointed out is the cost of the pack in relation to skill farm accounts.

Skill farm accounts help keep the cost of injectors low which is widly helpful to a new player who wishes to spend money on skills. Assuming of course he some how knows where to place them.

Skill farm accounts also represent slightly less than 60 dollars a month per account of income for CCP.

With this new pack, even after the nerf is implemented, it would cost 25 dollars to move my 200 million sp character to a new account and purchase the pack to gain 1 million skill points with no diminishing returns. This is a purchase direct from CCP not going through the economy at all.

Due to diminishing returns, it will cost me around 80 dollars to get the same amount of sp through plex purchase and skill injectors.

The assumption I’m making here is that players will do this instead of purchasing skill injectors. I believe even at the 400,000 range of dimishing returns you get more bang for your buck by making a new account instead of purchasing plex. At the 150,000 range of diminishing return you still get more bang for your buck if you omega the new account as well!

This doesnt even take into account the free 750,000 skill points you get for using the recruit a friend system!

Having therefore drove the price of skill injectors down ( a job already being done by sp farms ) sp farms wont be profitable any more. CCP then loses 60 dollars a month per sp farm so they can make 5 bucks selling SP directly to new players before they inevitably quit even though they said they wouldent.
