Devblog: Spring Balance Update Incoming!

I cant fly a rorq, never wanted to lead a “Goon” mining fleet, lol. So I cant speak about this particular nerf. (oh, if I remember correctly, the rorq was supposed to be nothing more than a super orca?)

This is about nerf’s in general.

I was looking for where the idea for EVE came from and ran across this.

"Actually they have done this, not to the MMO status but they have made a “Starfleet Battles” style of game and it was VERY good. Go pick up Starfleet command, and Starfleet command 2, probably the 2 best out there. The first one stuck with the original rules more, and the secone one they did a bit of tweaking for balance which is what hurt them from that point on. All are very good pace and the ability to join multiplayer battles is there. Highly recommend this game, as for a MMO replicating Starfleet Battles, I dont’ think it would fly. The whole point of the game was to overcome your own ships tacticle dissadvantages, balance is not something you can do in that game. As soon as balance starts to come into focus for the developers the game now loses its original appeal.

You are right though the game was great and still is, I have a few friends that still play it, talk about a TRUE hard core Paper and pencil game…LOL."

Yes, I am that old and still know that game far better than this one.

The line that caught my attn was;

“The whole point of the game was to overcome your own ships tacticle dissadvantages, balance is not something you can do in that game. As soon as balance starts to come into focus for the developers the game now loses its original appeal.”

Dear CCP, this is just an idea for the longevity and good health of this game, related to this particular thread.

Prior to posting a dev blog (or a sensitive subject that concerns many players, eg. mining or capital) , wouldn’t it be more efficient at the CCP management level, that:

  • 1st: you post the CSM minutes file;
  • 2nd: briefly state the incoming changes;
  • 3rd: make an in-game poll/survey *
  • 4th: post results of the poll;
  • 5th: only then, you may ask for any forum feedback.
  • Make the poll/survey available for 1-2 weeks when the players logon their game client.

Benefits of survey:

  • it will validate whether to go ahead with the changes that the CSM had decided;
  • it will help limit the waste of time from your developers, ISD, community managers;
  • and it will limit the high emotions, or any rash decisions (because the majority at time present would have voted);
  • it will prevent a power block to have upmost control over major decisions.

Considering that not every cast of the player base have the talent, money, time to have their representatives within the CSM at any point in time, I furthermore think that could be an efficient way of proceeding towards greater positive change, while limiting collateral damage.

A lot to unpack here. I’ll just hit some high notes for what I know.

  • Rep changes: They seem really well thought out and healthy; it also gives a nice easy number to tweak for balance in general, rather than adjusting a ton of individual hulls.

  • Carrier application: I’m not thrilled about the changes, though I don’t hate them either. IMO, the issue is not that carriers are too good, it’s that subcaps don’t have anything useful to do, and I don’t think this solves that. Forcing people to use tackle sounds good in theory, but realistically, it’s just not survivable. Maybe it will give a bit of a role for target painters, which don’t have to get in close, and can be spam-cheap in Vigils, but probably not much else.

  • " …disallowing ship warp while the NSA is active" Good.

  • Beam changes: I have mixed feelings. On one hand, there were certainly classes of ships that needed some help/re-imagining (i.e. the Zealot). On the other hand I worry about them overlapping with/possibly strictly outclassing rail ships, outside of double range bonus Caldari ships (i.e. Ferox, Eagle). I think that a DPS bonus (higher rate of fire + lower cap usage) would give them the help they need without the overlap.

  • Harbinger. I think the Harbinger is stronger than people realize and doesn’t need a second buff after the beam buff. That being said, I don’t think this will break it either.

  • Abaddon: The Abaddon was trash. I’m not sure this changes that, but it’s a move in the right direction.

  • Cyclone: The Cyclone had too little CPU and required a co-processor in almost every fit. Good change.

  • Caracal Navy Issue: Looks like this could be a serious range-flexible brawler with HAMs. I like it.

  • VNI: The ship was OP and everyone knew it. I like the changes.

  • Gila: Defanging is now possible. Good.

  • Ferox: The agility nerf is nice, since the excellent agility is out of place for a Caldari ship, but in general, I think the ship is over-rated rather than good, and doesn’t need to be punished like this.

Is a Nerf bad enough that people would consider going back to orca but the big question how will affect the industry as a whole

There is one question that I have after reading several of the posts here and reading the dev blog itself. The rep changes does this mean that each cycle of remote repair is less effective or does this mean that each repair module is less effective?
