Discord killed eve online's new player retention

Isn’t discord some sort of teen app for kids who want to scream at eachother while getting killed?

Give me TS3 or TS5 over Discord any lol

Oh, Discord…

Never mind.

There is nothing worse for my player retention than having to listen to a bunch of mindless jibber jabber.

If you’re playing solo, boy do I agree!

Fleet work is a different story. At least in smaller fleets. Having a good FC on voice can make an instant difference.

Why do people always jump to “good FC” rather than the much more common “drunk, bossy kid”?

Because they were neither drunk nor kids.

Yeah, it’s better to get rid of the experienced players and give way to automatic rewards.

Somebody is still logging in. The online player counts are stable.

As a long time player who prefers solo because he hates Discord this speaks to my inner newbie

“stable”? Yeah…about as stable as my ex. Anyway…those people you don’t want to hear (and can’t blame you) are making up more and more of those who are signing in.

Do they even know how to speak?

I heard a lot of excuses and explanations why we are losing players, but this is the craziest one.

I for one see the opposite trend - new recruits are always asking about discord and want to talk there.

I usually do exactly what the FC says…with one rather amusing exception. If the FC has said hold at a gate, or has issued no command at all, but people start jumping through…quite often everyone else follows anyway. One has to decide does one want to be the last and only person on this side of the gate. So I join the lemmings when about half have gone through. All the more so as the FC will likely observe that everyone has jumped through and decide to issue ‘align to next gate’…and you don’t really want to still be in the prior system.

What?

Discord is just the new TeamSpeak/Mumbl, just more user friendly and less hassle.

3rd party voice/chat has ALWAYS been a thing with Eve. Are you new here?

3rd party API for chat integration, such as messages posted in corp chat etc to pull them into discord or something.

There is already scripts developed to do this, but this is from an espionage standpoint. Some who are paranoid are moving back to heavily modified versions of IRC or for the more paranoid, Slack, which many may find useful for keeping out spergtoids.

Probably open to abuse but base some kind of new in game social skills on people rating you as a good help or conversation in local chat or something and gaining rewards on it.

That would not be a bad idea, unfortunately, if you look at Reddit there are groups dedicated to gaming the system. You may end up being manipulated to listen to a narcissist-demigod, Rather then up and coming individuals.

Re-invent the chat UI and mail UI.

I agree.

There is a rather irritating lack transparency identifying channel operators in non-fleet chats unless they state who they are in MoTD. They are currently difficult to identify and approach when assistance is needed in that channel.

As for mail, the only change I would request is an increase on the CSPA charge up from 1m to 100m ISK to set a more firm stop on spam mail from unknown players.
