[Discussion] Community Safety in EVE Online

First off - learn a thing or two about the 80/20 rule - While most of us will do one thing, there will ALWAYS be exceptions in any system. Respectfully, the problem exists whether you’re capable of understanding it or not.

Also, Eve does blur the lines between reality. That is the point - its time to evolve the conversation. Player events, coms all the time, Fan Events, these engage us in ways far beyond the client.

The real break through is when we demand a basic set of social rules from the Eve community, social rules which are in fact an extension of real life.

I find it outrageous that ccp is just acting like mittens, xen and goons were a recent problem. They have been a problem for more than 15 years. I have been in and out of eve online since 2004 on a few different accounts. This is just the account of my most recent character, having returned to Eve after more than 5 years away.

More than 15 years ago I and others reported it that mittens and goon swarm leaders ddosed, doxxed and harassed me and others, in and outside of the game. mittens, so upset and angry during their war with BoB, band of brothers, and that i podded his char at the time on my old main account, literally doxxed me. Not only that, at the time I was in recovery from injuries sustained in combat in Iraq at the time. Mittens literally called the military base I was on and fabricated a story accusing me of wanting to shoot people on the base. He LITERALLY tried to get me thrown in the brig. All because I podded him.

More than 12 years ago, I and others reported that mittens, and other goons attacked an FC in Circle of Two, Co2, outside of the game. They LITERALLY, tunneled and backdoored his computer, found the nude pictures of his wife, and having her employment information that was on the computer, sent them to her work place, a small hospital in rural Australia. She was fired and had to get a replacement job as a substitute teacher. The wife, of a former player, had her personal, private photos leaked to her employment to get her fired because her husband played eve and fought with mittens. He has not played an online game since. This was more than a decade ago.

More than 10 years ago, I and others reported that we were getting death threats and non stop spamming in chat channels threatening us, our spouses, our children because “the imperium is the only one important in eve”.

More than 5 years ago, during World War Bee, I was harassed so badly that not only did I leave the game, I had a mental breakdown. people contacted my former partner, they contacted my place of employment, her place of employment, her parents, her family members, my family members, endlessly with messages like “the mittani sends his regards”. These people did not give a flying fornication what the CCP rules, terms of service and eula said.

Even on my current character I’ve reported hate speech and harmful rhetoric being spewed by members of the community. At times, I have had heated arguments against these individuals because I don’t tolerate bigotry or harassment of any kind. Sometimes I have mistakenly gone overboard with my own speech due to the sheer audacity of some of the things that have been said and for that I apologize, because losing control of your emotions, even for a good reason, is not helpful. I try to keep calm, block the individuals and move on and not engage with them further.

Look, I get it. CCP cannot control everything players say and do in and out of the game, however, even when being presented with evidence via screen shots, recordings, videos and more, not enough has been done. I have been here since 2004 off and on, that’s almost 18 years of gameplay and use of the eve online platform and NEVER have i attempted to do what the imperium/goon swarm/bee’s whatever you want to call them, have done.

Never have I ever said or done anything as egregious as the things that have happened in this community at times. I believe that many of the players that are just claiming to be portraying a “bad character” are actually just playing how they are in real life. There are a lot of toxic players in the community, and in online gaming, i think thats probably a common occurrence. However, i do not understand what it is about eve that creates all these tyrants like goons, or horde or whoever.

Yes, reporting people for telling idiots to shut their pie holes is highly more important than reporting chomos and sex pests in your friend lists, right bruh?

What I said is what an ignore button is for. I’m sorry you can’t determine the difference between something worth ignoring and something worth reporting.

Funny, back in the day it was called “manners” and people held it as a virture.

I write about mental illness and you come up with an economy rule…

Youtube, Twitch, Discord, Teamsqueak, websites and so on. One has to wonder if some people don’t get this wrong when the Goons make a video for example where they sing “♫♪ Today I come to kill TEEEEEEST! You will drown in tears because I will burn down your house. We will wipe you all out until nothing more ♫♪ TODAY I COME TO KILL TEEEEEST!”

Maybe they should get a circle of counselors?

No, you write baiting strawman arguments and I’m just pointing out there’s conversations going on bigger than you, regardless if you’re capable of understanding them or not.

This conversation isn’t like one where we are debating the merits of a larger drone bay.

Well, if the VIPs want to settle this amongst themselves, fine.

You obviously don’t get it, if you make a feature where you report someone they would have in that instant reported you (with this new feature) for what you just said which is overkill right as what you said was not really that bad.

So my message which you missed was that the line needs to be clear you cant just start reporting everything otherwise it will become Eve Offline.

Enforce the rules you have already to start. They aren’t now.

@CCP_Swift , I appreciate that these issues get addressed. Here’s my take on this.

For people facing dark thoughths there is a group “broadcast4reps” that can be contacted. They’re amazing people helping others selflessly, out of the goodness of their heart.

Perhaps we need a second group like this, one specifically for discussing harassment and inappropriate behavior, a place to contact in Eve for a confidential talk about these issues, outside of one’s own corp or alliance. A place to be heard confidentially, taken serious, and get advice. With mediators that have the wisdom to discern between harassment and game mechanics.

And -if the nature of the case allows it- this could be a place to initiate/mediate discussion between the two (or more) concerned parties to find a way to go forward. Mediation as a first step in stead of banhammers (which can still be kept as a stick).

Just have read it all, that’s quite a lot.

Well, I was banned from many servers from quite a few games for griefing and exploting the mechanics in extreme ways, just for the LOL of course but I was always nice and respectful. Admins would ban me regardless just because they did not like the way I played the game.

But I never harassed the humans behind the characters, was always respectful, helped the other players to understand what was going on and I aways had the ability to keep things in the game.

What I always tell people is that worldly morals and game mechanics are two separate worlds and they should be kept separate. You can be the best in the real world and the worst in the game, those two worlds have to be sepparated. If these both worlds weren’t sepparated I could be in jail because the so many nasty things I did in all those games.

I always knew how to sepparate both worlds, this is important.

Being more specific, tears of rage.

I like the approach CCP but making this thread during today’s time where people want to be treated and respected equally turned this into a RL political battlefield.

I don’t know what the fuss is about , you should play L4D2.
Compared to that bunch, EvE community is like a heavenly chorus of angels.

Chinese, specifically, not all Asians.

Uh-huh. Soooo… create new account, make character, set up skill queue, wait a month before actually doing anything in-game, poof, circumvented easily? I mean, it’s not like this is a game where it’s difficult to spin up 30 new accounts.

“I don’t know what the fuss is about, you don’t have bubonic plague.
Compared to the plague, your pneumonia’s just a wet cough.”

You realize that’s how that comes across, right? ‘There’s worse out there, so why are you guys trying to make your stuff better?’

Yes, but the guy who’d need to agree is busy being a jackass.
