[Discussion] Community Safety in EVE Online

Whilst I commend the stance CCP are taking on this, I remain sceptical that anything will change. I have had RL threats (even threatened to find me at Fanfest) and been doxxed in game, and CCP took no action on the RL threat case, and only a short ban in the other.

These are not sufficient deterrents to stop this sort of thing still occurring.

What does the proper authorities mean?

“we will ban people from Fan fest” - well fantastic, keyboard warriors are WELL KNOWN for going to conventions and causing drama, rather than hiding behind their screens to be toxic. That will work!

Seems like CCP want to take every step except the one that will involve having to cease toxic players sweet sweet subscription money. Therefore, problem wont get solved.

What a load of white noise IMO

IRL stalking, death threats, rape, child pornography and grooming.

The things that have come to light, with very real evidence, are very very bad.

This isn’t about ganking. It’s about sexual assault and sexual abuse of minors.

Yea that ■■■■ doesn’t go to CCP that goes straight to the police/fbi and so on. Although banning them from Eve as well could solve a ton of future problems too.

I mean how does the convo even get to that point? Those type of statement’s are from uneducated people with a stick up their ass, I would say block/mute these people as they would not enrich your eve life style in anyway.

If they are in your organisation take it up with organisation lead. If the lead won’t do anything, then expose these people on forums/reddit.

If these people start harassing you by spamming you from alt’s and so on then that is where CCP imo could step in.

To go to CCP at the first instance is going to overwelm them, I don’t think they have the staff to handle all cases.

This is just my opinion ofc.

But these are IRL issues and should be dealt with by local authorities. Not some person in an office in Iceland.

If the person is found guilty IRL, then sure, that guy in Iceland could take action, but till these issues are dealt with, by the professional local authorities, its not a CCP issue.

If a person is not found guilty of a crime IRL, then why should CCP punish them?

Is ExtortionRP not okay now?

Could someone please confirm this as I don’t know where that ties into all this.

To be fair the chances of authorities actually finding these people are super low, if there is enough in-game evidence with logs that CCP can get a hold of then its better to ban them so they don’t do the same to other players. But obviously it depends on the severity of what actually was said.

Do you mean ransom money for not blowing up someone’s ship? Or ransom isk for not telling everyone their secret? lol

I don’t know, isn’t that enough to have some update on that whole thing? Without outing anyone please?

/I think if they ask me nicely then it is not harassing right?

Afezan reported for Abuse.

It’s this type of thing where we need to make sure CCP isn’t overloaded with silly things.

Do you know what you’re protesting against?

Do you work for CCP?

I want CCP to tell me, not randos, ta.

Otherwise its just corporate non-specific wibbling.

If a crime has been committed, Id like to know that the criminal is have action taken against them, not just “this isnt acceptable” and thats that.

I have two ideas that come to mind spontaneously:

Publish a kind of “penalty catalogue” that shows which sanctions would have to be expected in the event of violations.
For example, for insults there is a penalty of x in a period of at least … up to …
This could perhaps be entered directly into the EULA or Terms of Services in the appropriate places.

The other point: Hardly anyone will read the EULA / Terms of Service. Why not include something in the AIR programme to motivate them? In the simplest case, you get a few skill points for clicking on the link to the EULA or Terms of Service. This could be expanded at will (e.g. Qiuz). In this way, there should hopefully be a motivational incentive and everyone should realise that there are also a few basic behaviours in EVE.

Everyone’s a victim if its not what they wanna listen to or is not what they want, get over the abuse its simple if you let pixels and some stranger mentally hurt you so badly then may i suggest leave gaming and social interactions and social media alone and go work on life skills. Really strange how fragile people are to words.
People are so sensitive now days its a joke the world is so PC to all this, “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” a old saying many have no clue about, given this is the digital age you would think that people could handle stupid name calling and alike its like people post their life’s on social media and expect fluffly clouds and rainbows from everyone but reality is if your willing to put your life on show to joe public then be prepared to take abuse, play a game a pvp game with a social side expect abuse, next i will have to ask permission from victim if i can shoot them in null sec.

This is our starting point as a community? Before we can really drive the conversation forward, it must be rescued from muppet comments like these.

A “victim” is not something that people choose to be (if its a term being used properly). Eve is two decades old now, it means it probably has done more to raise children than a 1/3 of you.

There are two camps in the world - those that accept that your actions as a human being matter, regardless of where those actions are presented, and the perpetrators.

It really doesn’t take much to build up the empathy to understand what’s really at stake here. Honestly, a lot of these posts look stupid because people haven’t taken the time.

2021 I lead a discussion on hate & harassment. I would rather have

been flying but it needed to be done. No community is going to thrive

where some members actually fear certain words, words used in civil

discussion, but are offensive because the strike a cord of denial. My only

goal was just to get people to talk.

Coincidentally the following I just wrote in my personal log. Writing is

great, I recommend keeping a personal a journal to help in

understanding yourself and your world, and the EVE community. You

don’t have to share it with anybody, it’s just for you. The following I yield

up as an example.

HUMONS
The complicated nature of humons can be profound. The ego and

capacity for self deception is amazing. We are here because our

ancestors are the one’s that survived. I almost said lived, is surviving the

same as thriving? Were they the smartest ones or the most paranoid

that made it? A little of both perhaps, it’s complicated.

REALLY
Fear, anger and hate are themselves survival mechanisms. They give

us a break from the poor choices we have made and the harsh side of

reality. Freedom is not really free, it is responsibility. Free will still comes

with consequences. By blaming others we avoid personal responsibility,

it’s their fault. Faith, hope and charity are work and who want that

really?

FRIENDS
Do you want friends who give you what you want or give you what you

need? How friendly are you to yourself?

A review of HATE & HARRASMENT already on the EVE forums may be

worth the effort. Keeping in mind, it you don’t want to go out of pod then

don’t. Remember how many phycologists it takes to change a light bulb;

only one, but the light bulb has got to want to change. I feel I did some

good for at least a few; and, I myself grew and learned a lot like deal with

the feelings, respect that, before charging in with the sword of reason.

fly safe,

For some people, the line between reality and the game seems to blur. It can’t be healthy to have lots of accounts to multibox. Eve-Online makes these people mentally ill.
Two to three accounts, okay. But seven to 20 is crazy. This is something where CCP is guilty of. CCP should be careful not to overwhelm players with their gameplay. How is it possible for players to exchange their phone numbers to assist in a station robbery? Is it worth getting up in the middle of the night? Where does this pressure come from that makes players invest so much money and time in a game? If a rich boy wants to invest a lot of money, okay. But most of them are normal people with a real life. CCP has reached a point that raises the question: “How can we protect our players from becoming mentally ill and how can we protect them from the ill players?”
This would then require restrictions.

I empathize with how you feel, which is what you wrote. But, were is the empathy you talked about? During events in 2016 I had to start growing my own empathy or my life was just going to get run over by the stupidity in all of US. It takes practice and the impatience of our whole society does not help. Patience really is a virtue, but I would not recommend asking for it in a wish. Like telling the truth these days, which you certainly have done, the irrational will just run right over it. There are ways. Cantact me if you really want to know, or call me on my stupidity, I could you some peer review.
