Yes, I agree. The things that have been shaken out of the community tree in the last week or so warrant far more than a token response

Its tricky for sure, but imo players need to do some work as well they cant expect CCP to do everything.

Hello,

Personally I fully understand your concern, but you forget a very important thing in your remarks, namely that CCP is not and will never be a judge, let alone a psychiatrist in the worst case, and this, even if such in-house skills are preferable, even desirable; it definitely helps.

Let me explain :

The priority for any company in the digital economy facing proven risks of cyberbullying is to know how to be considerate; indifference to such acts, when they are very clearly identified, especially when they extend IRL, never brings anything good to these companies in the more or less long term. To achieve this, I told CCP in my first post, all the things that need to be reviewed within EvE Online; this must in particular go through a commitment of the whole community which will have to help CCP to update all of its data concerning us, for more transparency between them and us. These actions will allow CCP in the future to better anticipate, or even prevent the escalation of proven cases of cyberbullying, even if it means having to punish those responsible for such heinous acts, while preserving the evidence; it is sometimes the only thing to do first in order to avoid any contagion of the phenomenon within the digital platform, but it does not stop there.

Because in the most critical cases, that is to say all those that even the best of preventions cannot manage to curb, it is then necessary to go through the justice box; very often it is the victims who initiate this, and that is perfectly understandable. As I wrote above, no one improvises as a judge, and even less a psychiatrist in the worst case, moreover, no one in 2022 is immune to such undesirable behavior.

What are the root causes of all this?

1- the negligence, ignorance, even indifference of companies in the digital economy in the face of such a phenomenon that has been emerging for more than two decades, and today has spread widely throughout the Internet like a virus!

2- the individual behavior of all the actors, whether they are victims, witnesses, culprits or agents, faced with the successive occurrences of such events; no one is safe from a clumsiness that only makes things worse!

Finally, there is a corollary to cyberbullying! And there, I’m putting on my systemician cap to talk to you about it with full knowledge of the facts, particularly with regard to the spread of risks, as this is a simple ricochet that can be largely avoided, namely: cyberharassment by an omission that drives ever deeper the victims who do not feel supported!

Indeed, there is nothing worse than the simple fact of keeping silent about any proven act of cyberbullying. On this last point, CCP has therefore done very well, a) by publishing an information post on its main site, and b) by opening this important discussion on its own forum; too bad that despite this, some on this forum still take it with derision.

In any case, it’s already a good start from CCP.

So. Try To Fly Safe Again. Or Not.

ps-1: as a reminder, my advice is here:

ps-2: by the way, to my point 2- of these tips, we must add the criterion of free access which, without the slightest filter, is the door open to any form of predation, also, any free player testing the game should be assigned to a server dedicated to free access; ATTENTION, do not confuse with an ALPHA status when the player concerned has purchased any service from CCP such as a first daily injector…

If ever there was a single post that fully encapsulated the concept of slippery slope, this is it. It starts with something we can all agree on; the “n-word”. Of course nobody wants that around, so consensus is achieved. Then we slip down the slope a bit.

The word ret**d is used by immature kids to degrade a group of people that no kind person would want to leave open to teasing. Yet there is an argument. The word itself is legitimate. It means to hinder or slow the progress or development of something. You can purchase flame-retardant or foam-retardant. Even in the most cruel of context, you can -to this day- find legitimate hospitals with entire wings dedicated to the study of mental retardation. There is a strong argument to be made that allowing the most immature in our society to force any word they choose in to abolishment would certainly lead to all manor of abuse. Yet it still feels wrong so this word too is going the way of the n-word. It has even, in the most extreme cases been given it’s own n-word treatment of being referred to as “The r-word”…

…and we slip further down the slope.

We end with merely the word “racist” itself being added to the list of words that shouldn’t be allowed. Or even the name of somebody who was racist. And in fact, not even the actual name of a real person, but merely a name that hearkens back to a familiar name. This is the problem of banning words that somebody somewhere is offended by. There is no end to the number of people who can be offended by something. The great thing about Eve is that it doesn’t substitute itself as the parent of the players. It creates a very basic set of parameters and then sits back and lets the players sort things out. Of course, IRL exceptions have and should exist. Doxxing and swatting should have severe punishments associated with them. Everything else should be handled by the players IMHO. Player owned corporations can create rules to allow or disallow such language and players can chose to avoid corps that allow something that offends them. It’s a problem that solves itself. For targeted harassment, there are already tools in place for this such as blocking.

All other solutions just put us out on the slippery slope where we will race ourselves to the bottom.

All this talk makes me wonder what would happen to Psychotic Tendencies if something substantial ever came forth from this.

I agree with @Brisc_Rubal.

The ganking community is currently dealing with an issue where GMs are threatening to ban gankers, because miners are making IRL death threats. I certainly think it is wrong to say that gankers are responsible when another individual makes IRL threats.

There needs to be a process, in which both parties are heard, and rules which clearly define what is or isn’t acceptable. There needs to be a process which involves the ability to file an appeal or ask to speak to another GM. Unfortunately, at least one GM is stating that there will be no debate or discussion, and “no clarification is required”. That kind of attitude is one which inevitably leads to unfair resolutions. The current process is arbitrary and prone to hasty decisions without verifying facts.

Vagueness in your post to say the least, and that is a problem.
So, three points:

  1. what is ccp going to do better to ensure the application of their already existing rules, or at the very least give the community the impression that complaints are dealt with appropriately ?
  2. when will ccp conduct a real dialogue with the community by suggesting possible rules or changes thereof, so we can at last have a discussion between “stewards of the community (CCP)” and “members of the community (CCP’s customers)”, instead of guiding us deeper into this swampy grey zone ?
  3. what are, according to CCP, the rights of the victim AND of the accused, and what will CCP do to protect those rights ?

Without answers to these points, there is no exchange of ideas possible. I’m certain that members of this community can come up with all sorts of ideas, ranging from enabling anonymous accusations to people’s tribunals. That can hardly be called constructive, but merely an alibi for not taking more responsibility.

@Githany_Red i hope you are willing to fight alongside on this issue.

While im not the biggest fan of ganking, ill fight for this to not happen.

Yes i support this , and do what is needed. Speaking for myself , even though i spend most of my time fighting gankers and criminals and upset one or two, i have never had any real threats made to me , by Aiko or any one .

Why are the players all rattled up? There is no reason for that.

The topic is clear, this is about remembering everybody that CCP is working on it’s policies and did not abandon the community. They are just telling us that their methods are being improved and this not only normal but is also expected from them.

Enough of platitudes, blandishments, assumptions and virtue signaling, who have read the links already figured that everybody else did not read the links.

The policies in there are in general the same policies in other games, if anyone gets banned in EVE would probably be banned in other games too.

Which brings up an important question: Who decides whose culture takes priority? There are some cultures who refused to allow the original meaning of the swastika to be corrupted by the Nazi’s. They still proudly display the swastika as it was originally intended. If a member of one of those communities had an image on their profile or corp page, does somebody else have the right to come along and falsely accuse them of racism? Yes, many western cultures consider it irreversibly contaminated; but with an international player-base, who says the western way is the right way?

Western culture is pretty much “my way or the highway” 1 dimensional thinking, I think judging it on its own is futile we have to see how its used and in what context.

I completely agree. I only hope whoever makes the new rule on this values context as much as we do. Too often if feels like the default response is a blanket policy.

Pretty sure the Navajo and other native tribes, who use the symbol, count as Western.

I thank you for originating! I mean it.

Nicely expressed, except for that first run-on sentence. Edits, please? (Yeah, I’m a bit of a grammar. Apologies.)

The swastika was long used as a symbol of well-being in ancient societies, including those in India, China, Africa, native America, and Europe.

So basically all over the world.

If you let people in a computer game give you a nervous breakdown, you need to step back from the game. You have bigger issues than that.
