Disillusioned After Nearly 20 Years: The Decline of EVE Online

Hello EVE Community and Developers,

I write this post with a heavy heart, after nearly 20 years of dedication to EVE Online, I find myself at a crossroads where the game no longer holds the same value or excitement it once did. This post serves as feedback for the developers, but I also hope it resonates with fellow players who have shared similar experiences.

Highsec Ganking

Highsec, once considered a relatively safe space for newer and casual players, has turned into a playground for gankers. The constant threat of losing weeks of hard work to a sudden, unprovoked attack has become more than just a nuisance—it has become a deterrent. The balance between risk and reward in highsec has shifted drastically, and it feels like the game no longer protects or values the efforts of players who prefer this space.

Highsec Wars

The mechanics of highsec wars have become another source of frustration. The concept of declaring wars on corporations and alliances in highsec is understandable, but the current implementation feels skewed in favor of the aggressors. For those of us who want to focus on industry, mining, or casual gameplay, these wars are a constant threat that disrupts our progress and enjoyment.

Pay to Win

Perhaps the most disheartening change has been the shift towards a pay-to-win model. In the early days of EVE, achieving a powerful ship or high skill level required time, dedication, and strategic gameplay. Now, it seems that the playing field is dominated by those who are willing to swipe their credit cards to max out their skills and afford top-tier ships instantly. This shift undermines the very essence of what made EVE Online special: the journey and effort required to build one’s empire.

The recent experience of losing my ship—one that took weeks to acquire and outfit—to a player who clearly benefited from this pay-to-win model was the final straw. It wasn’t just the loss itself, but the realization that the person who destroyed my ship likely didn’t put in the same amount of effort or time to earn theirs. This imbalance is not just an insult; it feels like a betrayal to the spirit of EVE Online.

I am a multiboxer, and after years of dedication, I am now in the process of deleting all of my accounts. This decision saddens me deeply, but I cannot continue to invest time and money into a game that no longer values genuine effort and strategy.

To the developers: Please understand that my departure is not just a statistic. It is a reflection of the growing disillusionment among veteran players who remember a time when EVE Online was about the journey, the effort, and the community. I hope this feedback serves as a wake-up call to address these issues and restore the balance that once made EVE Online a truly remarkable game.

To my fellow players: I wish you all the best in your adventures. May you find the enjoyment and fulfillment that has sadly eluded me in recent times.

Fly safe, [The Pilot who self-destructed permanently was loyal for nearly 20 years.]

Bye.

We didn’t need the whine thread announcing your departure.

Goody, then maybe the price of the goods you made will go up, and everyone else benefits.

Bye bye, now. Thread muted because I really don’t care.

After 20 years you should know that no safe space actually exists in New Eden.

Use other peoples structures or use npc stations. Or… have combat pilots ready to fight back

P2W doesnt exist in EVE. 20 yr “vet” should understand better than anyone that in game skills matter more than the actual skills. Being a 20+ yr game and no way for people to “catch up” is why injectors were created.

I dont think this was written by a 20 yr vet but by a whiny carebear who cant adapt or keep up.

I think all the OP’s points in support of his decision to leave have been present in the game for some time now. Bar, of course, the loss of his ship, which seems to have brought matters to a head.

Perhaps, deep down, he has wanted out for quite a while and didn’t have the will to make that move. It is a wrench, I know, but it may yield unlooked-for benefits, for him and for us.

None of the individual points mentioned should - from the point of view of a veteran player - amount to quitting fodder.

@Eve_Helper_105k, you relinquished the game’s hold on you. Celebrate and move on!
