Altera, that’s a false equivalency. Everyone has their own reasons for mining. And many of those reasons are rational.
What’s not rational, is being afk while mining and expecting to be left alone.

Or maybe they have good reasons for that.
Like the fact that being AFK they don’t mine.
soup of words
I don’t understand what you mean?
Really ? Most people mine in order to get ISK. I’m simply agreeing wholeheartedly with MacGybo…in which he even mentions ‘grinding’ for it…
Right, which is a “reason” and it’s not irrational.
But I know what you are getting at. If you want isk more abundantly, swiping a card is the way to go.
I also get that mining can become a trap that players get stuck in, and shifty corps abuse -with their ridiculous buy back scams-
So I know what you are getting at.
And it probably affects the most miners out there. Sadly.
But there are other rational reasons for mining on a part time basis.
For example, I will “mine” to make it look like that I’m actually “mining” -as in one strip miner activated, because the other high as a neut- and well, you know where this is going…
Then I use those minerals to subsidize building small caldari navy antimatter. So win-win.
I mean that if people are actually AFK they don’t mine : your lasers stop after a time. So it’s rational to expect to not be attacked while you are doing basically nothing.
What’s more they may also have chose that place especially because the system was empty, so yes they could expect to not be attacked if they, for a reason or another, went AFK.
Claiming that people who have a different approach of a situation are not rational is arrogance. Just a way to feel better than other while actually ignoring the validity of their point. Which is irrationality.
Lol, ok… good luck out there.
So, it’s rational to expect to be left alone while doing nothing in a pvp game?
That was my primary point. And I think it is mainly carebears that get stuck doing nothing but mining, because they are too timid to do anything else. That also explains how a ‘leave me alone…I’m mining’ mentality arises. And to me this is sad, because these people will almost certainly have been lured into Eve with tales of epic space battles, intrigue, skullduggery, piracy, and so on. And now here they are…sitting there pretending that watching a mining laser is the height of game excitement.
Well, yes…and same goes for those bait Ventures that Destiny Corrupted flies. But we all know that is ‘mining’ with air quotes around it.
Even in Elite Dangerous, watching the first asteroid explode from those depth charge things is fun. But quickly becomes boring and dull after the first time.
Depending on the person, yes.
A rational decision does not mean it’s the correct one for everybody. On the opposite, if you make rational decision, it means that your experience impacts your choice.
An opposite of rational is “dogmatic” . Typically claiming yourself rational, and people who disagree with you as irrational, is dogmatic.
As you say, they can have their reasons. Not sharing them does not make them less rational.
For example, the notion of “PVP” is blurry. Some games are PVP but still have safe areas, some other have levels of whatever before you can get attacked. Even if someone were to be aware of Eve PVP nature, does not mean he would have the same understanding of this nature as you have.
Unless it’s true, in which case it’s rational.
Er…it’s rational to dock up before you do basically nothing. The idea that you can just float about in space and somehow others are supposed to just psychically know that you are in ‘doing nothing’ mode is about as irrational as it gets.
Amazing, best post I’ve seen in awhile.
Depending on the game, no.
Not unless you can demonstrate they are irrational.
If they cannot or refuse to demonstrate it, then yes, it does make them less rational.
EVE has safe areas too.
I guess this shows how much you know about EVE.
As a new player, the mining I did on behalf of my corperation paid for my shiny new Noctis. Now I can follow the big boys around and collect all that shiny wreck loot while they speed run the rat lairs in our system.
