EVE Crews: A lore-accurate* API-linked crew simulator

Thanks, glad I could help…

I gotta say the issues encountered in my last report of the app made it a very disappointing and discouraging experience…

I think the app is a very cool idea, just needs some more refinement…

Anyway, I look forward to your next reply…

EDIT:

Decided to try it again and only fill 3 Department Chief slots… Not sure why but even after selecting Patriots in the Command Commissioning page, I ended up having a majority of Conscript crew members of mixed Factions…

So just as I was getting ready to log into Eve and fill the Department Chief slots, my browser updated causing it to close and reopen… Much to my surprise the app once again reset itself back to the old Session 3 stats…

Seems like I’m stuck in a time loop…

Anyway, I’ll try it again but this time I’ll open the app after I log into Eve, hopefully that’ll break the Session 3 time loop…

Hey DeMichael. Thanks for going back in and testing again.

Two things you’ve described, and they’re different problems.

The mixed-faction crew after selecting Patriots is a known limitation worth being honest about. The Patriots preset sets your starting demographics correctly, 85% aligned to your capsuleer’s race. But each time you recruit, the incoming pool is calculated fresh from regional averages rather than anchored to that established composition. Over several recruitment actions it dilutes. The blend drifts. That’s a bug worth logging and I’ll look at it.

But the session rollback is the one that matters more right now. The app saves to the database 1.5 seconds after your last action. A browser update forcing a close can catch the tab inside that window before the write confirms, and if it does, the next load pulls the last confirmed save, which might be several sessions back. The app does try to catch this with a local cache comparison, but a browser update closing the tab can beat that too. Opening the app after you log into EVE is actually the right instinct, since it gets you a clean load rather than a mid-session recovery.

Worth knowing: the sync indicator in the top bar shows a brief pulse when a save confirms. If you see it settle before you close the tab, you’re safe.

Appreciate you sticking with it.

Edit: 5 fixes applied focussed on addressing the save regression bug and the Patriots doctrine dilution. Hopefully that behaviour will now be a things of the past and patriots can congregate in peace without fear of deletion.

Ok, I started fresh and this time I only filled 3 of the XO’s CR-4 Department slots, a Standard Engineering Chief, a Standard Medical Chief and a Veteran Security Chief…

Everything seemed to be going good until Session 5 was logged:

The main issue I see is that no matter what choices are made, there’s no way to make enough money to cover that… And as long as that keeps happening every 5 sessions, the app experience will just quickly turn negative..

Maybe the ‘every 5 session’ payment event should be changed to every 10 sessions, could also possibly lower the amount of the Officers service pay…

Anyway, the App reset issue is still active, despite manually doing multiple restarts back to the Command Commissioning page and also starting the App after logging into Eve… I even waited plenty of time for it to do a new save before closing the Browser,

And yes, I’ve seen the sync indicator pulse a few different times… Gotta say having the App constantly reset itself back to my old Session 3 stats whenever the Browser is closed / reopened is starting to become annoying..

I’m just a user, not a computer programmer so I have no idea on how to possibly stop it… Hopefully you can figure out some way to completely clear it from happening…

By the way, I like the Situation Assessment ‘Impact Review’ panel in the Coms page for event choices… Definitely an excellent addition to the App…

Anyway, that’s pretty much it for now…

I’m sorry we’ve not managed to lock down the save regression issue. There are now more guardrails in place and better visbility on how recently the last database save was made.

image

Hopefully that will see some persistent results, let me know.

I’ve also drastically reduced the officer retention contract costs and reduced the frequency to every 10 sessions as you suggested. Better to have well-funded playtesters to ensure all features can be explored rather than have you stuck chasing ISK.

Ahh, good to hear it… Would be great to progress further within the App and explore more of it’s features…

Out of all the times I’ve restarted and test ran the App, I’ve only been able to get above Session 10 once, and that was back around the time when you first implemented the App…

Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to help enable a fresh clean start and possibly help resolve the reset issue? The way it keeps resetting back to the old Session 3 stats it almost seems like the App saved info to a file within the computer…

Anyway, I’ll try a new restart again, hopefully the test run goes much better this time…

DMC
o7

Hey DMC, your instinct is exactly right - the app does save info to your computer. It uses browser localStorage as a fast local cache alongside the cloud save. We think that’s actually the source of your reset issue.

Here’s what we believe is happening: you have an old Session 3 save stuck in your browser’s localStorage from an early playthrough. Every time you open the app, it loads that old local data before the cloud save can respond, and Session 3 keeps winning.

The fix is to clear that local data. Here’s how:

  1. Open eve-crews.com in Opera (your choice of browser IIRC)
  2. Press F12 to open DevTools
  3. Go to the Application tab
  4. In the left panel, find Storage → Local Storage → https://eve-crews.com
  5. Right-click and select ‘Clear’
  6. Refresh the page and log in again

This flushes the stuck local cache entirely. The app will then load fresh from the cloud save.

Once you’re in, we added a FORCE SAVE button in Settings — use that after each session to guarantee the cloud write has completed before you close the browser. The topbar now also shows a ‘✓ Xm ago’ timestamp confirming the last successful save, so you can see at a glance whether your progress is secured.

We haven’t been able to reproduce the reset on our end, which is consistent with this theory — the old stuck Session 3 data is specific to your browser on your machine.

Give the localStorage clear a try and let us know how you get on. Fingers crossed this is the one.

Ahh, thanks for looking into that, will definitely give it a try… Also thanks for adding the ‘Force Save’ option in settings, that should hopefully resolve any future reset issues…

This report will be a long one so please bear with me on it… And just to be clear, my intention and goal has always been the same ever since I first started testing Eve Crews, to set up a Military style Ship with Faction specific Command group and Naval Enlisted crew members…

Anyway, earlier I did another test run from the Command Commissioning page with my usual selected presets - XO CR-4 (no Department Chiefs) with Patriot crew members… I actually did a few restarts to finally get a half way decent XO with bonus for my current hull class in-game - Minmatar ‘Rupture’ Cruiser…

I actually completed 12 sessions before closing my Opera Browser, I also experienced a little hick-up after completing Session 10 which I’ll explain later.. I gotta say the reduction of Officer pay and the change to 10 session payouts actually helped a lot… Definitely made the app experience much more enjoyable… Here’s a screenshot of my Officers Retention pay at Session 10:

As I was checking the TDR Assessment for Session 10, this little hick-up popped up on screen:

Naturally I selected ‘Reload Without Clearing’ and luckily it took me right back to the current Session 10 stats which allowed me to continue progressing up to Session 12 before I closed the Browser…

Speaking of the TDR Assessment, I might have found another bug… Course due to the whole ‘Reset’ fiasco, it wouldn’t surprise me if the issue is actually on my side… The bug I’m talking about is the TDR Assessment seems to be adding previous reports in with the current report… Hopefully these screenshots will help explain just exactly what I mean:

Session 2 TDR Assessment Report:

Notice the ‘Rogue Pirate Escort Durim’, he was in the actual Eve mission I ran for Session 2… That mission contained Durim in a Frigate with 3 Rogue Pirate Escort Cruisers… The Rogue Drones were from a mission done for Session 1…

Session 3 TDR Assessment Report:

Notice it shows ‘Durim’ and those Rogue Drones again… I don’t remember exactly which mission I ran for that session but it definitely wasn’t against ‘Durim’ and Rogue Drones… Those two are never together in the same mission…

Anyway, I stopped recording the discrepancies in the TDR Assessment Report until I got to Session 10:

Session 10 was just a mission site clean up… I actually selected the option ‘Silent Running’ right after undocking… The TDR Assessment Report is listing NPC’s from a previous mission that was completed during Session 9… Also there was a lot more than just 3 NPC’s in that mission which is why I was in the Noctis…

After Session 12, I checked the Crew Status on Bridge page which shows 99% Minmatar crew but doesn’t list the Faction of that other 1%…

Also how can I monitor and or remedy the CVF 1.13 effect?

I noticed the System Settings Font size selection seems to default back to 120% whenever I open the Browser which I reset back to 150%… Course then again that could be another issue on my side… lol

Figured I’d include this screenshot of Session 12’s Financial Operations just in case:

I then closed my Browser and later upon reopening it, the App reset itself once again… Only this time it reset itself back to Session 10:

Maybe that earlier ‘System Error’ hick-up changed the ‘Reset Time Loop Bug’ from the old Session 3 stats to this newly completed Session 10 stats…

Anyway, that just about covers everything… I’ll try out your suggestions to hopefully break out of the Time Loop reset issue…

DMC
o7

Thanks for all this great feedback DMC. I’ll get to work on fixing those issues - especially the system error.

On this:

Also how can I monitor and or remedy the CVF 1.13 effect?

The Crew Vulnerability Factor is calculated based on Morale and Loyalty. If both are at 100%, your CVF would be 1.00. If both are at 0, your CVF would be 2.00.

This mechanic is intended to simulate how motivated and fanatical your crew is, with high morale and loyalty driving every crew member to work hard for you and each other, maximising focus and minimising risk. Conversely, if they feel you’re not working in their best interests, or they are drained and disheartened, more mistakes happen, response times are slower.

Looking at your crew setup, your problem is the XO - their Loyalty cap prevents any further improvement. EIther you’ll need to work to get them promoted and experienced to the point that cap improves, or you’ll need to hire a more senior XO.

Thanks for the quick reply…

Excluding the Time Loop reset issue, I think the TDR Assessment report including previous combat stats definitely needs to be corrected…

I’m not a programmer so I don’t know how that could be done, maybe a time stamp placed at the end of the previous TDR Assessment Report could stop the current TDR Assessment Report from including it..

I’m going to continue testing from this new Session 10 stats reset and document everything with screenshots… I’ll do the DevTool clear option and see what happens…

I’m thinking it’ll just show this new Session 10 stats reset so I’ll run a few missions, then close and reopen my Opera Browser to see if that Time Loop reset issue is corrected… If it resets back again to this new Session 10 stats, I’ll run a few more missions and use the ‘Force Save’ option, then once again close / reopen the Opera Browser and see what happens…

As for the XO, I’ll continue collecting Command Citations with him and if I can achieve it, see what happens when he reaches his total for promotion…

Speaking of promotions, hopefully the Department Chiefs also earn a promotion after serving a specific amount of Sessions, such as going from Common to Veteran status along with gaining another trait…

So yeah, that’s my current plan, hopefully no more issues will be encountered…

DMC
o7

Ok, I actually did a few different runs with it…

First I did what you suggested and performed the DevTool Clean option, reloaded and re-logged back into the app with the Session 10 ‘Time Loop’ stats showing, worked up to Session 12, waited a few minutes and then closed / reopened the Browser… No luck, the app still reset back to Session 10…

Next I did the same thing as above except I also implemented the ‘Force Save’ option, waited a few minutes and then closed / opened the Browser… Again no luck, the app once again reset itself back to Session 10…

After that I decided to try everything and do it after each session… I started with DevTool Clear, then reload/relog, then did the settings log-out/clear session option, then checked DevTools again, then sync, then force save, then clear session, etc, after each session…

Actually I’m not even sure what exact order I did all those things in… However after logging Session 13, I did the sync, ‘Force Save’ and ‘Logout - Clear Session’ options but instead of relogging back into the app, I just closed and reopened the Browser, then logged back into the app to see Session 13 showing…

I’m not sure but I probably then did another sync and force save, then without logging out of the app, I closed the Browser… Upon reopening the Browser, the app was showing the newly logged Session 13 stats…

I’m pretty sure I cleared the ‘Time Loop’ reset issue… Course I’ll probably need to log a few more sessions just to be sure… Also probably use the ‘Force Save’ option after each session…

By the way, I noticed Eve Crews is actually listed in 2 different storage areas of Opera Browser DevTools and just to be sure, I cleared both even if nothing was showing:

Soo, in my last run to break the ‘Time Loop’ reset issue, I noticed the TDR Assessment Report was actually including the combat stats from a few sessions back…

Just a recap, I logged in to the old Session 10 reset, Session 11 was logged doing travel and completing a combat mission with ‘Battle Stations’ protocol active…

Session 12 was logged doing full salvage / loot clear of mission site with ‘Silent Running’ protocol active…

Session 13 was logged doing travel back to home base with ‘Silent Running’ protocol active…

The TDR Assessment pulled info from previous reports creating excessive loss of crew as well as breaking some of the ‘Undocked’ ship status protocol selections… Not to mention lowering crew Moral and Resilience stats as well as causing more money to be spent on recruitment and arrangements for the dead…

Anyway, that’s my report for now… Hopefully the ‘Time Loop’ reset issue has finally been resolved…

DMC
o7

Ok, great news, seems the ‘Time Loop’ reset issue is now a thing of the past…

After a couple of sessions, I again tested closing / opening the Browser and the app correctly showed Session 15 stats:

I then logged a few more sessions, tested it again by closing / reopening the Browser and the app correctly recalled the recently saved stats of Session 19:

During this last test run, I noticed in Session 15 that the Department Chiefs were only showing 8 sessions completed…

I never replaced any of the Department Chiefs so they should have the same amount of sessions as the XO, unless the way their sessions are counted has been recently changed…

So I double checked them again after Session 19 to see their service count was only raised once to give them 9 sessions…

After logging Session 19, I was reading the Logs and saw a discrepancy pertaining to a Session 18 event - The Quafe+ Incident…

The discrepancy is that the Manifest sync happened in the same session as the event which caused my selection to resolve the event as being uncompleted… I had actually removed the Quafe from my cargohold during Session 18…

Anyway, that’s basically it for now…

DMC
o7

Hey DMC — v1.66.6 is live. Your reports nailed two real bugs.

TDR Assessment was rolling back certain game state to a snapshot taken before the session processed, then piling the new session’s data on top of it. Run a few sessions before submitting and it was stacking old casualty data with new - hence the inflated losses, death benefits, and gauge penalties. Fixed. As a bonus, this also fixes the Operational Brief protocols (Battle Stations, Silent Running) having their effects silently wiped whenever TDR was submitted - same root cause.

The time-loop reset was the browser aborting the final database save when you closed the tab before the network request finished. Opera was winning that race too often. The save now tells the browser to let it complete even as the page unloads.

Your logout/clear/reopen workaround was effective because it bypassed the browser cache and forced a clean load from the database - which is exactly what the fix now ensures automatically.

The step-by-step session sequence you documented made this much easier to isolate. Appreciated. o7

Excellent, great to hear that..

Hopefully my reports aren’t too long, in the future I’ll try to keep them more simple and direct..

I just realized, largely due to me, this thread has drifted away from your original post… Might wanna consider creating a new clean thread to promote your app and change the title of this thread to reflect testing…

Once again, thank you for all your work… I think this app is great and I truly am impressed with it…

DMC
o7

EDIT:

By the way, the Command Citation Adaptation Assessment for the XO is a really cool feature, I like how with experience, the XO can gain bonus from different hulls.. The XO that I started with had Rupture Cruiser bonus, now also has bonus for Rifter Frigate and Hurricane Battlecruiser…

The Command Citation Adaptation bonus stats don’t affect the crew, it’s just the XO, correct?

Anyway, just wanted to let you know about that aspect, definitely very cool…

DMC
o7

I’m glad you like the hull adaptation feature. You’re right that it only benefits the XO themselves, allowing them to accrue extra CC points (so earning back the CC investment by learning new systems). For maximum efficiency and crew-wide benefits, the XO will always be at their best with their original Hull Affinity.

I’m not worried about this thread being repurposed as our playtesting exchange. It shows active development for anyone who is interested and wants to contribute. I’m not sure there’d be much benefit to maintaining two separate threads.

Ok, couple of things to report while working on achieving a milestone marker…

From Session 20 up to about Session 30, everything seemed to going well… Was piloting a T3 Cruiser, app showing 3 Department’s active, all crew stats slowly going up and ISK was actually being made…

After doing a force save and clear session log-out on Session 30, later when I logged back into the app, it showed the correct session count and stats (yeah, no ‘Time Loop’ reset), but the app showed the T3 Cruiser as having 4 Departments active with Flight Deck missing a Department Chief and crew members…

I actually thought it was a bug glitch… I tried a few different things, clear settings, relog, etc, but it stayed the same… I ended up hiring a Flight Chief, did crew recruitment to fill the department, then downsized to a Shuttle, dismissed the Flight Chief and crew, logged a couple of sessions, and then jumped back into the T3 Cruiser to see it once again had 4 departments to fill…

I then figured there must have been some code changes done… My mistake for thinking it was a bug glitch… Unfortunately that cost me some ISK along with even more being spent due to hiring another Flight Chief and more crew…

Anyway, from Session 30 going into Session 35, was no longer making ISK and operating funds actually got down into the thousands… With an Officers payment coming up within a few sessions, I knew there wouldn’t be enough funds to cover it so I used your sim/dev tools to add another 45 mill ISK..

From Session 39 to Session 44, I could plainly see the operating funds going down and then much to my surprise, Session 45 logged an Event which put 3 of the 4 Department Chiefs in sickbay…

Imgur

Imgur

Imgur

Needless to say I downsized to a Corvette for a few sessions to minimize the effect on the crew for having 3 missing Department Chiefs… It also slowed down the loss of operating funds…

Imgur

Anyway, I finally reached that milestone marker and logged Session 55 which had a promotion available for the XO…

Imgur

Unfortunately before I had a chance to visit the XO Lounge and finalize it, 2 more events happened right with it which dropped the operating funds down even more…

Imgur

Imgur

Imgur

After doing all that work and not having enough operating funds available to pay for the promotion, I once again used your sim/dev tools to inject another 45 mill ISK into the operating funds so I could complete that milestone marker…

Imgur

Imgur

I guess the actual point I’m trying to make is it seems really hard to make any ISK… Just a thought, maybe have the TDR include the NPC Bounty price and transfer that to the ships operating funds?

Other than that, I think the app is great, especially the unexpected event putting the Department Chiefs in sickbay for a couple of sessions… Course hopefully that doesn’t happen very often…

Anyway, this report went longer than I had planned… Keep up the good work…

Until next time,

DMC

Hi DMC,

My apologies for disruption to the departments - I’ve been tinkering with the department functionality and adding some nuance to it. There were some teething problems, which may have contributed to your troubles, but that’s all resolved now.

I’m glad you’re using the dev tools to compensate your loss.

On the positive side, now certain hull types automatically have specialist departments activated (logistics for haulers, industry for miners, science for explorers, flight deck for all hulls with capacity for 5 drones etc.). This creates a meaningful gameplay challenge (especially for lowly CR-1 to CR-3 XOs), but also a revenue stream. See below:

Automatic Specialist Mandates

By Hull Class:

  • Cruisers: Flight.
  • Battlecruisers & Battleships: Flight and Logistics.
  • Capitals: Flight, Logistics, and Industrial.
  • Industrial Command Ships (e.g., Orca): Industrial, Flight, and Logistics.
  • Mining Hulls (Frigates, Destroyers, and Barges): Industrial.
  • Haulers (Industrials, Transports, and Freighters): Logistics.

By Specific Ship Type (Overrides):

  • Exploration Hulls: 18 specific exploration vessels (including T1, Navy, Covert Ops, Sisters of EVE, SoCT, and CONCORD hulls) automatically mandate a Science department.
  • Drone-Capable Frigates & Destroyers: Specific drone-focused hulls such as the Tristan, Ishkur, Cambion, Astero, Algos, Dragoon, Talwar, Hecate, and Confessor automatically mandate a Flight department.

Specialist Department Passive Income

When these specialist departments are crewed, they generate passive ISK during every operational session. The base rates are:

  • Science: 12,000 ISK
  • Industrial: 10,000 ISK
  • Flight: 8,000 ISK
  • Logistics: 6,000 ISK

Income Scaling & Bonuses: The actual payout you receive scales based on the department’s crew fill ratio and its gauge engagement (the average of its Morale and Loyalty). Furthermore, if a department is operating on a hull where its role is explicitly mandated (e.g., an Industrial department on a Mining hull), it receives a 1.5× role bonus to its passive income generation.

Unfortunately, I can’t look at your screenshots in any detail as they’re hosted on imgur which is inaccessible from the UK for some reason. (I’ve found a workaround - I can right-click, view image in new tab).

Just sifting through your screenshots. 3 injured officers! That is a brutal outcome even for a major combat - and it looks like there was no damage or combat didn’t happen. Something odd going on with the combat detection heuristics there I think. I’ll look into it. Can you confirm that there was a combat? Or did the officers become injured unexpectedly/randomly?

On the up side, you’re getting some passive income from your flight deck.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply…

Yeah, I should have just kept the original Flight Chief and crew for that department…

Gotta say I don’t like having to use sim/dev tools to inject money into the operating funds, the ship should be able to generate enough funds to cover the operating costs and Officers pay as well as make a profit to hire a couple of Department Chiefs later on if needed…

I mostly do Exploration and Missions which is why I mentioned the possibility of having the TDR include the NPC Bounty pay and transfer that to the ship’s operating funds…

Yeah, imgur was having some issues when I made the post and wouldn’t generate their regular forum links for the screenshots so I used alternate links to post them… Glad you found a workaround to view them…

Some depressing news, I think I might have the ole ‘Time Loop’ reset issue again… After I made my post, Opera Browser did another update which reset the App back to Session 45 stats with the 3 Department Chiefs in sickbay…

Not sure why it did that, I could have sworn I did a save on it for Session 54… Hopefully it’s just a one time thing, I’ll let you know if it persists…

DMC
o7

I understand that and ideally the gameplay will remain balanced enough that you shouldn’t need to ‘cheat’ with the dev tools too often.

The reality is that EVE Crews is an experiment, not a commercial product. It’s a very alpha proof of concept by a solo amateur dev.

But I hear you. I’ll schedule some time to get the drains up on the financial balance. I fully accept that until the income/expenditure is tight, balanced, and fair, the idea of exploring using real ISK is off the table.

Here’s an AI slop infographic explaining the latest tweaks to specialist ship departments, which ships have to have them, and the income they generate.

No I don’t know what ‘technical bole supplementation’ is either.

I fully understand that and truly appreciate all the work you do…

I may not say this enough but it’s definitely an impressive app, the whole idea behind it is excellent, not only is it a great browser based ‘Behind The Scene’ Eve Companion app, it’s also a good RP storyline generator too…

The reports I post are simply my way of trying to help…
