EVE in the contemporary space

They arent trying to balance anything. They are driving sales. The game has lost more features than gained including the options for play style in the supposed sandbox. Theres not even any viable options left in highsec for advancement outside of one… do as your told, get in the only line that exists, generate taxes and plex sales. ohhh and muiltbox 12 free accounts with third-party software. (which is less fun than logging off.)

Well of course they are. In a true sandbox ( I think there is even such a space game though I forget its name ) I’d be able to put together bits and pieces and create a souped up Catalyst with 2500 DPS or something. But no…I’m not allowed any more DPS than John Doe. Everything is rigidly balanced.

You are talking about micro issues… balancing frigates isnt going to fix eve or make it a true sandbox with opportunities. And besides, when all is the same, it sucks. Like how they balanced the co-processors. Its dumbed down game-play and lazy devs tbh with no ability to perform or think artistically.

EVE has gotten quite simple fair point.

CCP is just changing the game to the gamer of 2023.

That and they have no ability to do otherwise. Kinda like… devs remake classic games now with better gfx. Why? Because they have no artistic talent to create something thats new and changes the entire scope of gaming. The original creative genius is gone and replaced with corporate hacks also on top of no more young folks with original artistic vision. They drives sales in the only fashion that they know how.

Yah MMOs are not known to be the world builders. That would probably be the single player games who can easily add on. Stellaris for example.

Then eventually someone will come out with their own innovative game to compete with EVE. I was apart of a 4x MMO (1 server) beta test and it sadly flopped due to lack of $$$. All comes down to $$$ in videogames.

The business side of me emphasizes with what CCP is going through to keep up with rising costs. Life is cruel to everyone.

If CCP had near unlimited funds, would they attempt to build R&D and expand the world more aggressively? I think so.

I completely agree 100% and would love to give you a like for that write up. Unfortunately the forums have determined this for me:

An error occurred: Wow! You’ve been sharing a lot of love! You’ve reached the maximum number of likes within a 24 hour period, but as you gain trust levels, you’ll earn more daily likes. You’ll be able to like posts again in 2 hours.

Main issue with that message is that no matter how active I am in these forums, I can’t gain any trust levels… And I’ve been an active member of this community for 15 years…

What I’m saying is that in 2023 EVE is simply not the best space game. Ironically I posted this the day before CCP decided to yet again push this narrative with the current best space game vote thing.

EVE is a great game and a great spaceship combat game.
It is not the best space game in 2023. That I think is currently probably No Mans Sky. As it has a lot more elements from the tropes of SCI-FI. And only really lacks the depth to combat mechanics and a more robust player fleet pvp mechanic to really be hitting nearly all elements of sci-fi space stuff.

Im saying EVE needs to find a way to be what it is while addressing where it is falling behind.
For me, those areas lacking behind are:

Exploration. - The final frontier is kinda not very final or interesting or varied.

The living universe. - Even if that’s more player-side background animations and effects like a distant flicker of laser exchanges and haulers warping around or space police pulling over a space criminal near a station. Aliens! yes Aliens. Its time EVE had some Aliens- Im not talking Xenomorphs or Vulcans. I’m thinking SpaceWhales and jellyfish the size of your ship floating around. Maybe the odd one so big one thats more interactive for players. Maybe like it turns up at a Moon crack and if players dont drive it off it rapidly eats all the moon go.

Walking in stations. Yes. Yes. I use to be like nooooo. But I’ve decided the compromise is to have a select few capital and Hub systems with a capital station that has WIS features. JITA, AMARR, YULAI. And for players get alliance capital keep stars. This means we don’t have server issues with every damn station and citadel having wis but it adds it and probably some cool potential features with it.

-Planetary interaction and landing. Again it’s now becoming a staple of the genre. And in media major franchises are going so far as to be called things like “Strange New Worlds”
2013 called and it wants its Mobil app-style clicky crap PI back.
2025 is calling for Sims/Minecraft/SpaceEngineer/NMS style base building and planet exploring. Its a hugely popular set of game mechanics.

  • Streamlining Player owned space structures. Identify your market- Supply the goods.
EVE has missed the mark on this too many times and we now have a mess of Citadels and POS that meet demand but are frankly incoherent and boring. There is actually a really simple solution to this.
Keepstars and Fortz are working and are good. POS and Astrahaus work but overlap. Scrap POS Completly. Move the POS bubble and single Supercapital docking bay to Astrahauses as an upgrade module that is an alternative to tethering on them. Basically, combine the features.

The problem is, „the best“ is meaningless to discuss about. Everyone and their dog has an idea of what that is, no one will agree.

„What should guide Eve Online development?“ is the real underlying question. One about goal setting. On the one hand: „money“ which is a necessity. Otherwise once again anyone can pick something and no one is going to agree.

A lot of people use „popularity“ or variants. Player count, peak concurrent users, whatever the favored measure is. The thing is, it’s unclear whether that’s a good goal too, and the forums are littered with incessant bickering over it. Fads come and go, and in Eve‘s lifetime the „popular gameplay“ of general gaming culture has shifted a half dozen times, making it an endless chase.

Eve in the contemporary space is doing well, all things considered for a 20 year old game. When you look at what Director of Product envisions for the game for the next year, none of it is what you suggest. And it is probably for very practical, cost conscious reasons where ideas meet engineering constraints (see: „money“).

When is that supposed to happen? It’s getting boring in here.

We have because you have? Strange notion…

You’ll need to define what exactly is the quintessence of a space game before you decide is any game is meeting it or not…

Exploration does feel like exploration when you are first starting out, but like any action it becomes familiar. And since New Eden was literally designed as a finite area to be conquered, held, and fought over by players, procedural new areas constantly being made will literally make EvE not work at all.

Planetary Industry could use an overhaul, and we did have more interaction with planets when DUST was running. But in the end, we are ship captains, and this ain’t Star Trek.

Only so much personalization can be supported. Remember that nearly everything is player made, so to increase personalization beyond Aesthetics would require a niche to fill and then the industry to back it up. Too many items start to make everything look the same, and then you’ve gone AWAY from something novel.

As for aesthetics, I’m okay with that to a point. EvE industrialists are industrialists - not artisans. That’s beyond the scope of EvE at this time.
