Okay, it HAS been dying since it started in 2003 and people have heralded the end countless times before it. Yet the fact remains: one day the servers will shut down.
How would I memorialize my 20+ years in Eve? What would I do when that time happens for me? For my friends, for those who have since passed away that I met in game and all the cool stories and relationships this game has created for me in those years?
So, now my question: how would you? How would you, or how HAVE you, immortalized Eve?
Hopefully Eve will last a long, long time still. Dont call me a doomsayer! I love Eve, and I never thought of it from this perspective before, and wanted to share it with you all.
It’s kind of on topic here to ask – has any other game erected monuments with the names of their playerbase’s characters? Or done anything comparable?
Cheesy though it may sound, i memorialize the game through the friends I’ve made along the way. I get married in three weeks. Multiple alliance mates are coming to the wedding. Some are speaking in the wedding. The game will eventually die yes, but those friendships will not.
I dont do much…i just keep many many old screenshots that i took all through my travels. Thats all i really have left. Many of the folks that really meant something to me are gone. Ill keep all my screenies like a scrapbook if this game should ever close down.
I have container after container in case CCP/FC should follow through on its April Fool’s joke!

I memorialize EVE by remembering the chill that ran up my spine the 1st time a corp member said, “Goons are coming.” Its right up there with getting hit by a car, losing a fingertip, the chopper ride over the Grand Canyon when we hit the rim and the piolt just dumped it on its side for the almost mile drop or the time we hit a rogue wave in the Bermuda triangle. I have to ask my wife where I got all my stiches because those just don’t compare to some of the other things I went through in life.
Every game has a lifespan. I memorialize EVE by trying to be the best I can at the game.

Well, in terms of the game, the largest existential threat is that CCP loaned 40 million $ from a toxic loanshark and is wasting them developing a videogame literally noone asked for and even less people will ever play (let alone pay for it). So when the time comes to pay back that debt EVE Online will be gutted off for a final money grab and then will either shut down or be left in maintenance mode depending on the cost of either option. Competent and lucky game developers don’t end up in places like CCP… or flee in time.
But as for me personally, what do I remember fo the game? Well, my main’s name is on the monument. And I’m still shitposting around here 9 years after I played the game for the last time. I have a collection of screenshots from the headquarters era, many variations of portraits of my girls, and guess that somewhere buried in some of the old forums might be the thread about running a fictional bar in a fictional station in a fictional EVE Online with Incarna (The Greater Fool Bar).
People… not really much. I was pretty much a soloer and the few people I bonded in any capacity left the game before I did. And that’s it.
Well…if EVE ended tomorrow, I’d be quite pleased with how far my 4 most active chars had come since the day I first undocked at the AIR station in Bourynes a few years back as the biggest carebear in EVE…
Not to get all biblical on you, but a wise king called Solomon wrote a book called Ecclesiastes, where he ponders the purpose life. Not really a book, more like a term paper. In his paper he wrote about his attempt to seek pleasure in life, but everything he tried was for nothing. He was a king, so he built houses, farms, and great building. Then he realized, these things would not be here forever, they would crumble into dust and be forgotten.
I have played MMOs most of which still exist, but when I returned to one of the forums, it was gone. All that knowledge and history of the game evaporated into the ether of what was and use to be. That same game had user based missions and when they pulled those, I stated it was like burning a library of rare books. Players saved what they could on their PC, I am sure the Wayback Machine might have a snapshot or 2 of the old forums. Even then, how long will those be maintained? Hard drives fail, systems get deleted, and it is all for the moment.
We are creatures who live for the moment. For example, you go to work Monday through Friday in most cases. When you return to work on Monday, someone asks, “What did you do this weekend?”. You tell them you went camping or fishing, maybe you watched a movie. However the weekend is 48 hours long and what you are talking about didn’t last more than a few hours. We live for those moments and forget about the dull drive, the bad food, the loud neighbors, etc..
In summation, there is little we can do to keep stuff around forever, be happy and live in this moment. I have fond memories playing games, maybe I can take my memories with me in the end?
That statement can be used for so many MMOs, I gonna assume you talking about EVE.
It’s not dead, some people in here love to do the chores, you can see above the person posting his satisfaction is looking at a spreadsheet…
But it’s very close, once the chores are not attractive anymore, I guess it will sink very fast.
Because people at some point stop responding to the marketing: “this new era”, “the new frontier”, “total revamp”.
Big mistake is thinking it will happen organically, it won’t. It’s some kind of collective thinking, “this is boring”, and the masses leave, decided to not look back.
Solomon had existential angst because he was surrounded by gold, could satisfy any desires, and no longer had to struggle for anything. When I used to climb mountains…me and my mates would always quote ’ no pain…no gain’…and though the view from a mountain top was often amazing, it was the effort of getting there that was the real achievement.
