There is more to the game than fitting. Mike failed to conduct proper reconnaissance, and he failed to show due diligence. He failed to work with or cooperate with others, and he failed to join a fleet. He failed to ask for help, and he failed to engage in diplomacy. He also failed to take an alternate route.
Hatch is bang-on with this. Summer numbers are slower in general, but FC will be able to gather any key metrics on player retention. If it’s up by even a smidgeon, we could very well see “safe-sec” expanded beyond Exordium. Imagine if Jita went 1.0…
By not paying a ransom which wouldn’t have been honored anyway? 
He was reimbursed far in excess of what he lost and your “group” demonstrated its true colors, once again. I’d say if anyone came out on the losing end it was gankers.
I can assure you there are freighters that are set blue, and the gankers do not gank them. Mike’s failure to get on that blue list is a diplomatic failure. This is a PvP game, he should either learn to PvP or make friends with people who do. If he wants to fly his ship without getting ganked, I suggest he move to Exordium.

And while Alko is correct that Mike could have taken more precautions, I never have nor have I ever been asked to pay a ransom. When you enter a fight with me, there is no mercy, no ransom, just one sides loss and certainly no buying a f’ing permit! 
The last 2 bil of pocket change I split between Alko and Zaera to help promote their playstyle. I undock every time expecting someone like me to try and hunt me down. Far worse than having either of those 2 after you.
