Chilli… Couldn’t resist posting this.

It would’ve been wild to see Route 66 in its heyday…

You took the loss well, Mike, but I still feel like this incident marks a new low for the ganking community. Reading through that Reddit thread, my biggest concern was with the circumvention of the warp timer. That seems like a bug and should probably be addressed.

Is this similar to the bumping exploit?

Bumping was also involved, but from what I got in the Reddit thread, they used rotating tacklers to keep resetting his emergency warp timer. He couldn’t logoff, couldn’t escape, and they kept him pinned down for ~20 minutes while they assembled a fleet to make the kill. That (to me) seems like an abusive mechanic. There should be some point where after enough time has elapsed (2 min, 5 min, etc.), your ship warps off regardless.

He could logoff.

There’s an x in the top right of a windowed screen. There is also a logoff button, and you can always use ctrl+alt+delete or just turn the computer off.

You know what I meant. He couldn’t logoff safely and despawn. I get why that mechanic exists for capital fights. I just don’t think it makes sense for subcapital ships.

Freighters are capital ships, aren’t they?

They don’t require the Capital Ships skill, and you can fly them in highsec. So no?

EDIT: That raises another thought. Even in 0.5, with a pre-pull, you have what? 40s to make a kill from the time you pull the trigger? By all means get the kill if you can (sharks got to swim and all that). But is it reasonable to pin down a target for 20 minutes so you can get your duckies in a row first? That seems borderline to me.

EDIT 2: I’m normally neutral to slightly pro-ganking, but popping the Magic School Bus? That gives me the serious ick. This is the kind of incident that swings opinions, both player and dev.

I’m inclined to agree with you @Hatch_Nasty. 2min, 5min, 20min - whatever - it still seems like an exploit. By Mike’s own estimates it was 15-20min from ransom demand to gank, during which time he was forced 600km (!) off the gate. I still find that distance absolutely insane.

So if you don’t know freighters are capital ships, and you don’t know the CONCORD response times, are you sufficiently informed to debate the mechanics of freighter ganking? What else don’t you know?

If you guys care about Mike so much, why are you all too lazy to log in and provide him with an escort?

I’ll tell you what I do know. Every industry is regulated. Those that self-regulate follow rules they impose on themselves. Those who fail to self-regulate follow rules imposed by government. Exordium was a warning shot. Pray they don’t see retention skyrocket.

No, it wasn’t.

Exordium has nothing to do with ganking. It was done to bring new players into the same location, instead of spreading them out. There was never an issue with ganking new players, which was already forbidden for more than a decade.

Okay, I’m sure you’re right.

Indeed.

Do you even look at zkillboard? If you’re making this statement solely on character age vs. the obviously poorly fit ships that denote inexperience - then sure, new players are hardly ever ganked.

On the other hand, if you look at the type of kills, ie: mining ships, poorly fit haulers or anything that can be blapped by a tornado or ganked by 4-5 catalysts - then yes, new (or at least inexperienced) players are the vast majority of victims.

Most of these miners, and poorly fit haulers, have actually been playing the game years longer than me. Mike, for example, has had plenty of time to learn how to fly his capital class warship.

Well, pray tell how you would have fit it differently? Other than avoiding that system entirely, bringing an webbing alt and a group of 40+ players to counter-gank you - I’m curious what your years of ganking experience can share? I’m sure all of us would love to gleam any lessons on “how to fly a Bowhead properly” (note: this wasn’t intended as sarcasm - I’m genuinely interested in your take on Mike’s fit).
