At launch, what was the overall state of the game and how was the first 2 years of development
At launch there was no overall state of the game. 14-day free trial, no Alphas, we didn’t even have mining barges. We were all mining in cruisers and jettisoning the ore into cans. No hand-holding tutorial, no career agents, no free anything.
No CONCORD.
Indeed, high sec was a free-for-all. Though I do miss the static, infinite ice belts.
it was so long ago, did u feel that development was slow in the early days or did they keep improving it while making headway
There wasn’t anywhere near as much to do then as we have today, but yeah, they released steady updates and content. There’s a list somewhere that shows every expansion they’ve ever done, Incarna, Red Moon Rising, etc…
I find this listing of early development a bit more readable:
Many of those expansions were quite meaningful and impactful in the way they provided new content and altered how players engaged with the game. Personally I felt that CCP had pretty good vision and drive and put in the development effort up until around 2010.
Then they had a couple years of puttering around doing less meaningful expansions until around late 2012. They had also lost much of their original talent by that point. And then they basically abandoned serious EVE development for the next 8 years or so while they continually tried to create “the next big thing for CCP” (and failed at it every time).
Things have picked up again in the last few years, although frequently in directions that indicate CCP is still a dev team in search of someone who knows how to design a game.
I’ve only been around since 2006 (Revelations II expansion) but I have to agree with what Kezrai said, in particular about the loss of the technically skilled and visionary devs after 2010. There was a bit of a bump with CCP actually having a creative director who had a vision for the game’s direction and real enthusiasm for moving Eve forward (CCP Seagull). Although I didn’t agree with many of her ideas at least she had thoughts beyond tweaking numbers in the database and labeling it an expansion.
@Raleit you may find The Making of EVE Online | Escapist Documentary and EVE Online | Down the Rabbit Hole an interesting look back into the past of EVE.
