With recent port of Wine to OpenBSD, it is now possible to play EVE Online there.
There is a drive from OpenBSD gaming community to collect list of games that are supported.
EVE Online is supported (Reddit) however while I was writing the Wine patch I got banned (OpenBSD has different approach to signal handling, I fixed it later but can’t confirm that it is enough). That account is now unbanned, and another account I used (actually this one - Neth Iafin) was never banned but for that one I used the fully completed Wine patch that correctly kept all the signals going.
So this is more of a question to EVE devs if there is a way for us (well for now actually just me) in Wine-OpenBSD team to test it now without risk of getting banned.
Also if you want to try your luck and you used OpenBSD somewhere and always wanted to play EVE - then please go ahead (I am not responsible if you will get banned though =) )
My problem in that regard is twofold: I am an occasional NetBSD user and secondly i have only Nvidia cards in possession.
OpenGL acceleration for Nvidia seems to neither work on NetBSD nor OpenBSD. So i only have NetBSD running on my Sun Workstations and on some testing machines and VMs. My main system for EVE is Linux.
But nevertheless: Thank you for your effort!
I hope one day the accelerated Nvidia driver will be a thing also on the non-FreeBSD-BSDs…i don’t plan to get AMD cards just for that.
What integrated graphics? As i wrote, i have nvidia chipsets only. No 3D acceleration possible at all on current NetBSD and from what i read OpenBSD as well. No 3D acceleration means you get a framebuffer only and while you can use about 70% of all software, have a desktop and be productive, everything that requires 3D acceleration/OpenGL will either not run at all or at 1 fps.
NetBSD has ported nouveau to their system, but i never managed to get it to run with 3d acceleration. I think it is in an unusable state currently. And OpenBSD doesn’t have nouveau or anything similar it seems.
I hope they get this sorted at some point in the future.
