Forums karma

Karma is just a MEASURE of how many good ideas you’re come up with
Your criminal record is just a MEASURE of how many crimes you’ve committed

The question was why popularity should effect how their idea is evaluated. I can’t really say, I’m no psych major. However, I do know of plenty of examples where precedence is definitely a factor when it comes down to these kinds of decisions

Your analogy is stupid. Whether or not an idea is good is comparable to whether or not a person is speeding, not how you should treat the person if they are speeding. If the radar says they are going 55 in a 35 it doesn’t matter how many speeding tickets they have, they’re going 20mph over the limit. Likewise, it doesn’t matter how many good or bad ideas a person has had in the past, their current post is either good or bad on its own merits.

It doesnt matter what time it is you got caught speeding, its up to th e officer. Speeding on a free way vs speeding in a school zone with kids trying to cross are completely different examples. They should be judged by the circumstances not the number of times.

Wow. I don’t know (nor do I care) where you live but that is some really lame and lightweight law enforcement you have there. Caught for the 50th time and it’s a ticket?

Explains why you seem so bloody clueless and entitled.

No need to be so openly hostile everyone. I haven’t slept in the last 36 hours due to a hackathon and as soon as I get back I’m greeted with all of your lovely opinions.

I understand what you’re trying to get at. However, in the Canadian justice system, repeat offenders are much more likely to get a harsher sentence for the same crimes. Maybe it’s not the same way for whatever country you live in, but I’m merely giving you an example.

Fair point. However, if the officer recognizes the speeding driver because he’s well known for speeding, he’s more likely to get a ticket.

No need to be toxic, we can discuss what you couldn’t understand. Since you seem to have missed the point I’ll explain the reasoning behind my analogy.
I never said you only get a ticket on the 50th time, I said

This does not imply that the person who was caught on the 49th time did not receive a ticket. I’m stating that people who are caught speeding for the 50th time WILL get a ticket.
Hopefully, I have made this simple statement easier to understand

Sure there is. Stupid ideas get hostility.

Again, you are missing the point entirely. You are evaluating the idea/action, not the person who did it. Like the objective truth of a car’s speed a posted idea is either good or bad regardless of the history of the person posting it, or even who posted it. If I post “1+1=3” it doesn’t matter if I have +5000000 karma or -5000000 karma, the idea is still wrong.

Unfortunately, hostility only undermines your points

Yes, this is true. HOWEVER, there are no objectively true ideas. Once an idea is proven to be objectively true, it becomes a fact. Ideas are all subjective and thus depend on many factors, including karma.
Actions have consequences, and it sounds like you dislike the idea of owning up to them

No, hostility undermines your ability to make rational decisions. Calling you a ********* has nothing to do with whether or not I’m right, and if you think otherwise then you don’t understand how facts work.

HOWEVER, there are no objectively true ideas.

What’s your point? If someone posts “nullsec farming income should be nerfed by 30%” then that statement is true or false regardless of who is saying it. If you are unable to separate the idea from the person posting it then that is your intellectual disability, not a forum problem that needs to be changed.

Legitimate consequence: you hate me for saying mean things to you and declare war on my corp in game so you can kill me.

Not a legitimate consequence: you hate me so you lose the ability to objectively evaluate ideas I post.

One of these is actions having consequences, the other is you being stupid.

Karma is a measure of how many people agreed with someone. It does not say anything about the quality of the ideas. All it does is indicating how much a person aligns with the echo chamber.

legitimate consequence : you are an asshole on the forum and lose the ability to be aggressive with other people, your right to write is removed.

No, hostility undermines your point. It says that you have none, and that you are mentally unable to accept being wrong. That’s all.

But that isn’t an up and downvote system.
An up and down vote system is posting popular or unpopular writing or ideas regardless of how you go about doing so.
And as such has nothing to do with an ideas merits, or a posters manners, only the popularity. for example anyone being an asshole to you is likely to get upvotes, because you aren’t popular with a lot of regular posters. This doesn’t mean that behaviour should be encouraged.

We already have a system for people who are assholes, it’s called the ISD and forum bans.

not working.
Several people are already insulting every time on the forum and don’ get banned, even though it’s written in the forum rules that they should.

I agree that I have just a vague idea of this “upvote/downvote” system. I thought it was a mere “promote/demote” systems.
IIRC reddit uses a relative voting system, so that if you always vote for the same person, or vote against the same person, your vote counts as none. (same as in laguage analyzis)

The point being “being caught for the 50th time and STILL getting a ticket” not “getting their 1st ticket”.

Loser.

Care to explain? I’ve not ever seen anyone get in trouble they didn’t deserve.

This system would also encourage people to be nicer and avoid using harsh language
