Hi, I’m (trying to be) a returning player, I did a complete fresh install of eve today via steam and then the launcher itself, downloaded all files etc. When I click play, it goes through “game client is launching” and then “game client is running” etc but no game window opens. Is there any fix to this?

That was your first mistake…
i mean it worked before when i played via steam so i’m not sure why it wouldn’t work now
Nine times out of ten, when someone is having an issue with EVE logging in, purchasing PLEX, or any number of other problems, they are using Steam, Linux, or god forbid, both. There’s a reason for that…
