Gatekeeping for new players?

As I am about to join a corp in the Goonswarm.. One day you and I might face off across a small deadly space. But on that day should you and I meet. I hope we both can have a d&mned good fight. Afterwards maybe even talk on local and have a good laugh about it.

Though my thoughts on gankers is they are good for my bottom line. As I sell both ships ammo and some modules to both gankers and miners. Someone once disgustingly accused me of being, and I quote, “A filthy arms merchant.” here on the forums. That still amuses me to no end. I do not recall who did post it though.

I got called a Hedge fund manager by one of my friends…. still makes me laugh.

Wear the title like a badge of honour though, cuz that is Eve, we profit off failures and successes and can financially back both sides in any conflict. In fact its a good policy for the bank account to do so. :smiling_imp:

As the poster was thought he was somehow both condemning me and insulting me. I wear it with pride and as a badge of honor. After all being recognized as having an impact on the game is always a nice thing..

My dad used to tell a story about a salesman from back in his day. The guy didnt care if you talked good about him, or said horrible things… ONLY that you continued to talk about him. He realized that being on someones mind or on their lips to be talked about was free advertising for him.:smiling_imp:

I wouldn’t gank you. :frowning:

So you’re blue with gankers, support gankers, and call that “not allied”? Cute.

he is not blue though.

Regardless, you can be targeted for a million different reasons and factors, and it can really just boil down to being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Having said that, you can reduce the possible scenarios which will end in your demise significantly by having a good tank and paying attention. The strategies you use will differ though, when for example, you are mining in a belt or when you are in a hauler or freighter moving gate to gate.

Of course, you can never be 100% safe. If the cosmos itself conspires against you, and CCP Hilmar himself spawns 10.000 Talos cruisers ontop of you and disables your engines, then yes, there probably isn’t a way to survive that. But for every other scenario, you have a very fair shake at survival, and all it takes is a bit of “streetsmarts” and finetuning your tank. A few key modules may cost you a handful of million ISK, but could mean the other side needs to field hundreds of millions of ISK to mitigate that.

So yeah, you can absolutely influence if you’re going to be ganked or not. You could argue that maybe Gloria was very lucky, but if you allow yourself to explain all the measures and strategies that he/she employs, you will likely find that the dependencies on luck are systematically reduced to such a degree, that it is no longer relevant to succeeding. In other words, it’s just plain skill, and it can be learned.

Well…that was an interesting discussion on philosophy today. Hope you like the references.

Ever since I destroyed one of Safety’s cargo ships ( I didn’t know it was such ) I’ve avoided shooting Safety suspects ( including your alt ) … so I guess there’s some mutual benefit. I often sit right outside Jita within shooting range of Jon Ogden and avoid shooting or podding him. Not least because its not a good idea to shoot the local lurkers if you’ve got to hang around near them. For the same reason I tend to avoid shooting Novus Ordo.

That said….I’d expect my Absolute Order chars to be targeted. And my dozen or so other alts that nobody even knows are me

I’m not blue with gankers. In fact I myself have all gankers ( including Safety ) set to red. I am blue with Absolute Order…because four of my 18 chars are in that corp and Governor Lee knows that Gloria is an alt of them. Safety regularly gank Absolute Order, so none of those chars are safe. And no-one even knows that my other dozen or so alts are me…so nobody would even know not to gank them.

There isn’t a single ‘me’ in EVE…I have a finger in a lot of pies.

I have started game no progression in mind I did career agents right right and learn a lot sometim too much for one day. Many mods many stats and lots of rules. I like ratting and mining so I train in a destroyer for now, not enough skills or isk to buy use the cruiser plus all amunition and support mods. Progress is difficult to see and keep thinking on when it is so slow. I will not be able to use 150 hybrid guns || for two weeks so I go mining to make some isk I buy mining enhancment to mine faster and I can go lowsec becuase the ship was free. I like also explore but I don’t know how to do it yet I take some missions but yet combat because my skills are too low right. I don’t know if I want faction warfare it sounds diffcult and expensive to do for new player so progression not very present from moment to moment. I did upgrade Navigation skills to max and got very good result noticably also train into mining lasers and go from 54m³ to 1,743m³ /s which I thing is very good progress in that department. After some hours of play I can say I like the game very complex and complete andI like about the game the UI and efects for ships and ssounds. There is lots to discover for me, lots of ships and enemies factions it is going to keep me interested for years, progression evident or not.

Welcome to the game. Nice that you are enjoying it. Do not sweat it to much in not knowing what you are doing. No one in this game knows everything. Even bitter vets that have been here from the day they opened the door will tell you that no one can possibly know everything in this game.

As for learning.. you will always be learning something new as long as you are willing to pay attention. I have been playing for a year and 8-9 months now. I am not even considered to be a vet.. Still a newish player. Thinks is a marathon and not a sprint to to an end game goal. In fact there is no traditional end game.

There is a lot of resources out there that can help you. plenty of teaching/learning corporations. Eve University is the oldest and can help you on your way. Yes, that is where I am and yes it is a shameless plug.

Again welcome to Eve Online and New Eden.

Fly safe.. o7

I think I know even less so I don’t do something maybe it makes me suspect or criminal. The overview helps a lot. It is one of the best thing I saw in a pvp game and the fitting teaches a lot if I understand the info window correctly.

I am not expecting miracles. This is long game to use as online hobby no win tomorrow but it more interesting that way, like a good TV series with 15 seasons. This game got my inquisitive mind working overdrive and the Simulate Ship function is life saver

That is good good for social and team play when the game is overwhelming and difficult.

Thank you for the welcome!

I would add the dscan to that list of things to pay attention to as well. Also a good teaching/learning corporation is not just for social and team play. Just saying..

I don’t know d-scan very well it confusing when use the drop-down, the terms aren’t intuitive so it’s a lot trial and error. Not sure which I should pay attention most, the system solar map or list. I think a course should be able to be to be set once an object appears in d-scan because that’s why a scan usually means, to intercept a target of something of interst. Anyway I have to lots to learn on that.

I expect to find a bit of everything in a medium sized corporation. I think I will get back what I put in. I don’t expect charity or someone to take me by the hand. I want to hold my own too.

That’s the box you’re confining yourself to, it is not what the game is about.

Agreed.

Just asking, what is the game about for you?

Exotic dancers, of course.
