I was wondering for PvE content, missions, exploration, events etc would I be better served with a specific set like high grade crystals for shield or askelpians for armor or going with the 4 pc genolution set?

Genolution helps with fitting but tank implants reduce the amount of fitting you’ll use for tank allowing for more damage and application, or just way more tank. If you’re flying an active tanked ship the tank implants are almost always better.

You can have few clones and everyone can have other set.
With core you care less about what ship you can use on the same clone. More fitting resources means you can fit more demanding modules that usually have some bigger bonuses or are cheaper than the best modules with reduced fitting demands.
