Highsec is Fine. Don't fall for the FUD

Highsec is fine. Don’t let the FUD and fear mongering scare you.

Please play in Highsec and get to know highsec before asking to make sweeping changes to Highsec. We have had a rash of posts asking to make changes to Highsec, when it is clear the posters are not experienced in the mechanics in Highsec, and don’t know what they are talking about.

Ganking is exceptionally rare and generally preventable. By now everyone should know, learn to dscan, watch local, don’t autopilot and afk mine, don’t haul your plex, don’t carry billion isk modules in ships with million isk tanks, learn the mwd/cloak trick, get a webing friend, get a logi friend, don’t fly what you can’t afford to lose. Highsec is not safe, but it is safe enough.

Ganking is good for EvE. It adds friction and helps keep local markets worthwhile. It also gives a little spice to a bland area. Sure, occasionally people get suckered into doing something dumb, and they lose a fight. There is no shame in losing a fight in a spaceship fighting game. Learn from your mistakes and continue. EvE is a multiplayer PvP game. You are going to have to interact with players. Most of the time you don’t have to if you don’t want to. If you do get suckered in, learn from it and carry on. Above all, don’t give anyone any salt.

Industry in Highsec is fine. Research in Highsec is fine. Hauling in highsec is fine. Trading in Highsec is GREAT! It is easy to make billons sitting in a station or moving things from one trade hub to another and reselling it.

Any new guy reading these forums and wondering if EvE is too toxic, too angry, too spicy for you after reading the threads in here, don’t worry. The water is fine.

If you anyone is feeling nervous, despite these reassurances, just contact me in game and I can provide you with a permit. This way you can mine with Safety!

Another tip is to tick ‘auto-reject duel invitations’.

Honestly…the only toxic people that i see in this entire community are the very ones raging about ganking and how they cant or arent allowed to freely do what they want when they want.

The people that play the game the way its intended….all the pirate corps, the ganking corps, the station bashers, all those nasty little roaming gangs that throw total smack afterwards……

….Are all completely nice and helpful people. If a person im wardeced against blows me up, then convos me and tells me what i did wrong and do you want advice? I totally want to put him or her on my buddy list and keep the relations going. Ive totally lost count on how many great connections ive made in the game in the past because of first contact violent interactions.

Its totally awesome the way you can use that mechanic to make MORE friends in the game.

I employ a toxicity test.

I ask people to buy a mining permit, and what I’m really asking is whether they are cool or not. If they send 150 million isk, I allow them to be part of the cool club. If they refuse, then I know they aren’t fun to be around.

One of the dishonest claims that is often made is that if ganking is not that common, how can it have the claimed larger economic impact on the game.

Well…imagine there was no danger in highsec. You could fly all the way from Amarr to Jita with zero risk. So you’d have no need to fit any tank. No shields. No damage control. No rigs. Just sail through with zero risk. The highsec market for those items would collapse.

It is precisely the risk, even though it is low, that creates the market in highsec for all the defensive mods. So, its not just the turnover from ganked ships having to replace stuff….it is every ship mining or hauling ( or indeed even combat ships like Marauders, which get ganked too ) and fitting tank that generates a substantially larger part of the highsec economy than just replacing the loss to ganking.
