How many guns on my ship? 8 or 16?

Yes, but even that doesn’t really suffice, cuz larger ships might only be able to fit 8 large guns, but they could easily fit 16 small guns - so it’s not a question of powergrid. As I said, I’m not sure there is any plausible lore based explanation.

One conclusion I can draw from this though is guns must not have a dedicated gunner, or crew, because clearly that crew isn’t doing anything.

Think thats more a matter of hull architucture and internal distribution of resources , there designed to have x gun bays , why no doubling up smaller guns ? there simply not designed that way , it would be a diffrent internal configuration therefore a diffrent ‘hull’ .

They already have the guns doubled up.

The question is why can’t they use them.

No i meant no 16 small instead of 8 medium , I thought that is what you were implying in your reply to my post about field of fire .

As i said though its seems they would need to have twice as many guns if they where balanced on both sides , as they are , because they cant shoot ‘through’ the ship , only 50% are usable though as thats all the internal resources the ship has .

It’s clearly not an internal resource issue.

If I can fire 8 guns on one side of the ship, then why can’t I fire just one gun on one side, and 1 gun on the other side? I’m not sure there is a plausible science-fiction lore explanation for this, but it’s certainly not because the ships lack sufficient power grid.

Its as plausible explanation as i an come up with but since we are discussing imaginary space ships feel free to imagine what you like

Sure, you can feel free to imagine whatever you like.

I’m looking for an explanation that actually makes sense. The hallmark of good science fiction is that the fiction actually be based on science.

I guess you don’t understand that.

Funnily enough my idea does make sense to me and it seems others have mentioned similar theories about field of fire in this thread , but feel free to continue your search for whatever you find satisfying.

Ok, bye!

Just woke up again, brain isn’t as foggy now, so anyways-

Perhaps the turret slots on ships are paired to only one slot, the turret slot. They only take up one slot yet mount two guns on your ships, so as to guarantee full coverage during a fight. Now, the reason you can’t take one gun and shoot the other can be that both the guns only keep ONE target in mind, the target they are assigned to shoot. So if one gun from the pair can’t consistently keep the target in its firing range/can’t swivel to it, the other from the pair activates. It could have been made that both guns fire separately, but that would mean taking more ship resources than necessary, since now each gun has its own tracking systems and what not installed onto it. This could easily overwhelm a ship, or just leave unnecessarily empty hardpoints. Therefore, pairs of guns to ensure that there’s no unnecessary hardpoints, and no blind spots, ever.

My wording is probably going to be really wonky here, sorry about that.

Easy, 16, as your eyes can see. Only 8 can shoot at a time.
CCP simply allowing your ship to shoot from any angle.
