Alan Moore. Same with “The Sandman”. Script must be good. So good writer is a must, both at comics and books. It’s just easier to diggest the comics but there is no place for imagination here. Everything was drawed by someone else.
It allows those of us who find it hard to describe with words the same qualities in a different medium.
The quality of thought is the singularity of creation and by extension storytelling in both media and I appreciate the value in both.
I remember seeing that there will be an adaption of Good Omens on Amazon that I’m looking forward to. They’ve cast Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Aziraphale and Crawley respectively. I think they’ll be really good choices to bring those characters right off the page.

From the writer-drawer perspecitve sure. It’s all about storytelling, but nothing beats Heart of Darkness by Conrad or Trial by Kafka for example. It’s something that can’t be drawen it’s must be written. The certain style, the mood. I remember my first touch with Lovecraft 20 years ago: dark night, countryside, I felt so deep in the book that I didn’t see the storm incoming. Suddenly light went off just like in the movies and lightning flash the room. It would be obvious when was drawen in the comic book. The mosters are most scary when sits in our imagination not on sheet of paper. Comics are shortcuts which are taking some part of fun.
There are very good comic stories but it’s 1% of the market. It was belgian and french domination back then. Where are creators like Bilal or Jodorowsky now?
I suppose American gothic just doesnt speak to me.
However, I would say there is precious few science fiction classics in comics outside of continental work that matches modern classics in literature of the genre.
When superman first appeared in comics you still had (some) carnival strongmen wandering around dressed like that (why they dressed like that I have no idea) … hence as superman was supposed to be strong the symbolism made sense, back then.
