I was reading this article on the BBC today and thought some of you may desire to voice your opinion.
I know it is many people’s dream to set foot on the Moon ( aka Luna ) or Mars in their lifetime. At my age, I neither dream of going or plan to see it happen. I didn’t even travel much until after I married. However I remember some brave men and women offering to go flying off to Mars years ago. They didn’t even have a round trip plan at the time. I could not imagine hopping onto a jet to Paris and not booking the return trip ticket.
The article, if you didn’t read it, is about physicist Andrew Coates promoting AI robots would be safer and cheaper to send to explore space. Yet I think there must be some of you with your own opinion on exploring space. As I read this, I thought to myself, yet here another scientist smashing people’s dreams.
I wrote mostly Tolkien based high fantasy novels myself, but I did some writing on Star Trek. I remember back then how much I realized that Star Trek fiction was even more mythical than my fantasy novels. I looked into the pure science behind space travel to avoid insulting the reader’s own acumen of knowledge. It was extremely disappointing to read about FTL speed and various theories. Many science fiction dreamers, especially Star Trek fans, tend to use science to support their fantasy. Yet what I learned back then, torn it down in minutes, telling the reader it was all impossible.
I am glad all my fantasies depend on magic and unexplained metaphysical properties. But my wish is for all the dreamers and brave souls who want to go to the Moon and beyond to continue to work toward their dream. Don’t stop dreaming or lose faith because of the Andrew Coates in this world.
Why would I want to go to the Moon or Mars?? There is no air, trees, food, animals… nothing, and the little water there is on Mars isn’t for drinking.
Lunatics. Planet Earth is filled with them.
He’s right. We’re already sending robotic vehicles to explore space and planets, I don’t see why we should send humans… unless they feel particularly suicidal then yeah, send them on a one-way trip to Pluto. Less idiots on Earth.
Send robots, send cyborgs, send AI-equipped vehicles and drones and let them bring back the data, samples and ores. There is no reason whatsoever to send humans where humans aren’t supposed to live.
Anyone can see that life on Earth is finite, humans will either colonize other planets and the race survives or they stay here and it eventually dies out.
There’s no need for complex explanation or climate models, the Earth has an expiry, as do the rest of the planets in this system and it’s host star.
It’s not a matter of opinion, it’s just the way of it.
@Princess_Rose_Ivory I don’t know but the scientists aren’t very convincing on that; too many conjectures and guesses. Plus, I don’t see what I would do on the Moon or on Mars, even if they let me bring literally a ton of books there. I would die of boredom.
Besides, I don’t want to die in space or on a dead planet. I want my body be put in the family cemetery.
I’m not being disingenuous, I’m being very serious. Earth has been around for billions of years. I don’t see why it couldn’t be around for billions of years more or indefinitely for that matter.
These people in this forum are quick to insult when someone doesn’t roll over to their side of an argument. It’s really shocking how they behave like children.
Mate I’ve just posted a link to an article debunking you, I’d supply academic research papers but you’d dismiss those too. You seem to think you can just dismiss science, that’s quite a heady mix of narcissism and temerity. What is wrong with you?
Don’t throw science in my face like I’m a bible thumper!
I just told you that Earth has been around for billions of years and nothing proves it won’t be around for another billions of years so if you can’t accept the truth then get off my fcking back about it.
