Covetor? Yes. Procurer? No. Retriever? Usually, but you have to choose between mining fits and tanking fits and you can’t go in between or its pointless.
On the whole though, I cannot disagree with your assertion of “bad”, but my view is that they are engineered for the greedy to hang themselves with, and lets face it, every miner is human and therefore, usually greedy…until smacked enough.
They don’t have any issues with staying stationary, with the boosts to mining range you rarely need to reposition your barges.
Apart from the Procurer and Skiff they indeed have ways to evade attacks once they are attacked. Stop putting gour ships in a position where they can get attacked and warp out if you see hostile ships incoming.
The higgs rigs aren’t added ‘because the barges are bad’. The higgs rigs is added to allow a differebt playstyle. I have considered the higgs rig myself on my barges, but found it more useful to use the rigs that increase align speed instead.
Just because Orcas have a yield that’s lower than that of a Procurer doesn’t mean that the yield is not too high. The Orca has many benefits over barges, the huge ore hold, massive tank, high drone dps, ship maintenance bay and incredibly useful mining boosts, remote reps.
Have you considered that a mining yield of any size on top of all those other abilities could make the Orca push dedicated mining ships out of competition for low effort mining?
Sure, you may disagree with how bad you think low effort mining is for the game, but the fact that the Orca is a preferred mining platform for some people means the low yield definitely isn’t ‘too low’.
I personally think low effort mining has a place in the game, but not to this extent where multiboxing Orcas makes it this easy.
My idea of good mining ship balance is when all ships have their purpose and niche. When one ship is doing it all and making other ships obsolete, it may require changes.
In this case mimimg barges are dedicated mining ships with a clear purpose and the Orca, which already has another purpose as mining booster and general mining fleet support is overtaking dedicated mining ships with it’s low but significant yield on top of the other bonuses the Orca brings.
Someone wants to put a MWD on a barge to ‘reposition’ the ship and complain it doesn’t fit.
I say that with mining range boosts barges rarely need to reposition.
2b. I also say that barges as defence can warp away as a defence
You say that warping away is a form of repositioning
I respond that I do not consider warping away to be repositioning (on grid) as it does not involve a propmod like MWD, you know, that thing why this chain of comments started.
You attack my ‘ignorance’ yet again
I’m starting to think I may not be the ignorant one.
Edit: it seems that point 1 was not started by you but someone else.
I read that as if you were saying that warping out is a form of repositioning barges.
Or did you take ‘Stop putting your ships in a position where they can get attacked’ literal as a ‘position on grid’ instead of what I meant it to be: ‘in space next to gankers’?
No, I was saying that your two posts are mutually exclusive.
As in, you need to reposition yourself frequently to be able to warp out faster than the gankers land on you. That’s actually what the higgs are for : you need to reposition yourself less. You still need to.
EVE Online is a game the rewards group play - always has - and that is absolutely okay. While solo play should absolutely be possible, the game needn’t cater to solo players. CCP is pushing the game towards more group play and this is absolutely a good thing, as data has shown that when players engage with each other (in corporations/alliances, in voice comms, and via shooting at each other) player retention is dramatically improved.
There’s a reason we say “the best ship in EVE is friendship”.
If you want to play solo you can. There’s nothing stopping you from using a Venture or a Prospect and solo mining. You’re more than capable of doing so. You are not entitled to the convenience of a station in every system or compression at your fingertips. They’ve already made that stuff easier than it’s ever been, too.
Don’t expect the game to be as easy or as profitable solo as it would be in a group. That’s all.

If you had read my posts, you would see that I was asking that CCP leave the solo player some crumbs, not a plateful of caviar.
I have never compressed ore, or asked for it or wished for it (and that is irrelevant anyway to a discussion of Orcas, or do you not understand that?)
I did not ask for a station in every system. I just said it makes operating at range from home much more painful for solo players with barges or exhumers. Hence the attraction of the Orca.
Unlike you, and all the whining gankers who find Orcas need a bit more work, I have no sense of self-entitlement.
If you even bothered reading what I, and others have written, you will see that EVERY SINGLE COMMENT in your post is groundless.
But hey, why spoil the narrative running in your head with an accurate understanding of what others are saying? Everything you have just written is deflection from the basic point of this thread, because you have lost the argument, failing to demonstrate in any rational manner that “Orca is bad.”
Perhaps the Catalyst and Thrashers should be nerfed or reroled into exploration ships, because the fact that so many gankers fly them must mean that they are overpowered?
Wait! Those Catalysts and Thrashers are usually flown multi-boxed by a single solo player!
Outrageous! Why should CCP cater to them? Why should it encourage their antisocial solo play?
Oh, that will be because they are self-entitled mouth-breathing bottom-feeders / heroic elite PVP megastars…
Yes and you’ve talked about “operating at range” in “systems where there are no docks” or w/e and that this is the reason the Orca shouldn’t be changed.
Why should operating away from your base not be difficult?
It is not ad hominem when you fail so spectacularly either to read what others actually say, or cannot comprehend if you do read. As I say, you are just deflecting from the core arguments which you cannot answer except with fallacious assertions.
That’s ironic considering you never actually address what anyone says to you, you just yell angrily at them and rant about “gankers” and how “they didn’t read what you wrote properly”. But okay. Concession accepted I guess.
