No you dont. There is practically no choice for miners or sense of progression compared to weapons.
T1, faction, T2, strip miners, deep core. Each one has their own purpose, benefits, and drawbacks.

I always find it funny when someone dislikes residue. Why? Because a residue defender will always jump forward and say, “You dont understand residue!” Every single time! 
Residue is so easy to understand. Some people just dont like it. Others just get offended by people not liking it.

My take: lots of words, almost zero information. The one absolute I took from it is that at the moment CCP continues to devote all their attention towards null sec, with a vague statement that they are aware there are other regions of space and they might get around to them at some distant unknown date.
