You cant say “Gambling, bad” then institute Gambling.

Alternatively, they’re trying to cash in on short-term gain before the whole loot box thing gets shut down.

It’s not a loot box.

it’s a lottery. See my previous (citation-filled) comments.

Yeah, there’s an idea.

Why don’t you guys just wait for it to come out on the 10th and then file a lawsuit against CCP?

If you’re this confident that it’s breaking gambling laws, should be pretty easy to win, lmao.

I love the idea, but I hate the implementation.

On the good side, I love that this sort of activity is coming back to EVE, and have always liked popular out-of-game services getting integration directly into the main client.

On the bad side, oh man… This probably should have been given some more time to incubate. The good with the bad in Chaos era.

First, this is a significant feature addition added behind a paywall other than Omega and flies in the face of the freemium model. If you pay the subscription, you should get the game with all its updates/features unlocked. CCP should, at worst, be using this feature to drive more people to Omega by making raffle creation an Omega service.

Secondly, there’s the permabans for the existence of popular services just like this, even after they followed CCP’s demands regarding RMT. There’s a perceived level of hypocrisy here that will likely require some sort of statement from CCP. What happened to all those issues with gambling and RMT?

Third, the requirement of, essentially cash, to list items that will inflate the minimum raffle price to value of item + PLEX/cash cost + margin. Simple supply and demand here makes listing on the market the superior option for both sides of the transaction. CCP already has a clear problem with ISK faucet/funnels as evidenced by the extra transaction taxes recently implemented. If the goal was to do what is good for the game here, there would be an ISK tax on this instead of cash to allow more market-favorable balancing of transaction taxes.

A raffle for fake worthless items for fake worthless isk. Also the players in the raffle are not playing against the house, it is other players.

a t-shirt isn’t a transit currency, it’s movable commodity external to the game environment. Unless you’re saying you bought the shirt specifically to flip it with the sole intention of gambling the proceeds. Which is a stretch and a half.

It is, but it’s almost certainly going to be targeted by the same anti-loot-box legislation.

there’d be no need, the Gambling Commission would be all over it.

And I’ll sit here and watch as nothing happens.
I trust CCP’s legal team a bit more than some forum warriors, lol.

■■■■■■■ yikes CCP. I just resubbed, after not playing for EVE for like two years. Undoing that right this second.

Because the laws in question are still pending or unclear in their implementation and lawsuits cost money. I don’t see how this option is better than the alternative of CCP seeing the player riot about to happen and backing down from an idiotic idea.

Wait!

Did you just assume legal team? IN 2019!??!!?!

Or more likely no riot will happen and people will enjoy using the new feature to either make isk or to try and win items.

there is no House stake in a raffle or lottery, it is entirely funded by the participants, unlike a gambling casino where the odds are always stacked in favour of the House. That, in Law, is the only difference between a lottery and a casino. As far as the participants in a lottery are concerned, every other participant is the House.

■■■■ you CCP.

Ahhh, the items needed to start a raffle can ONLY be purchased with plex which is paid for originally with someones real money. Whether you personally buy the plex with real money or isk doesn’t change the fact REAL money is required at some point to buy the hypernet relays.

Actually CCP’s stake in these raffles is guaranteed - They sell the plex used to start a raffle.
It is a win win for CCP with no risk at all.
