Introducing the HyperNet Relay

I agree that we want the game to survive in the long term.

I do not agree that preying on the addiction of online gambling is a good way to do it. It is a predatory way to do it. It’s been demonstrated that online gambling, just like regular gambling, does measurable harm when unrestricted. Do you really think CCP will be taking any of the steps needed to run their gambling in a responsible manner? Were they taking any of those steps the last time around? We know the answer is ‘no’.

At any given moment, the overall impact on the human race—economically, socially, population-wise, however you want to measure it—of theft is pretty damned minimal. Same with fraud. And extortion. And assault. We don’t allow them, though, do we? We don’t encourage them and call them “an entertaining and social activity”, do we?

Wrong is freakin’ wrong, man.

Yup. And heroin is fine because people choose to inject it into their bloodstream. Casinos are fine because people choose to walk into the casinos.

hehehe

Sorry. Dopamine. You are in violation with the EVE Online EULA by Encouraging or inducing games of chance as prohibited by the Conduct part of the EULA, specifically Section B.

Not really. Somer Blink was laundering ISK and turning it into real world currency.

Yup. According to CCP who just implemented a competing product a few years later. case closed.

The EULA only prohibits third party game of chance. First party game of chance is perfectly allowed and even encouraged.

No matter how you attack this or defend it, the point remains that this is online gambling. You pay RL money to get it going, whether or not you use isk/PLEX at some point in the process it is based on putting in RL money. And “you may be the lucky ticket holder and win the item being offered” is gambling. There is one winner and the rest lose. Gambling.

Dress it up how you want, defend it if you like either way it doesn’t change the fact that this is online gambling with RL money input.

Is it a lootbox? No, as with a lootbox while you do get crap 99% of the time you do receive at least something. This is just out-and-out gambling to generate additional income for CCP without any pretence at improving gameplay etc. with the certainty of lootboxes arriving before much longer.

Sorry, this is just another scheme for CCP to generate money for themselves because no one is going to put anything of real value into it… Disingenuous at best… First they started confiscating the skin markets and destroying player investments in them…and now this… This game is wide open for the devs to create all kinds of new things to generate money for the game, but instead, they have chosen to interfere in the player markets to generate money… I used to love this game until they started pulling this crap and made most of my investments totally worthless…

What was this? I’m out of the loop, perhaps.

This is not interference. This doesn’t directly interface with player orders in any way, shape, or form. It’s a new market type. Not 100% sure I like it, but it’s a new market type as an option for players.

These hyper cores will probably naturally index themselves to their real life price. Just like skill extractors index themselves to around 4.20-4.25 USD/Euro worth of ISK.

(Noizy btw)

Sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree with this one. First, we are all adults here (most of us). Gambling addiction is a legitimate issue, but it impacts a very small percentage of the population - generally between .5% and 1% from most of the data I’ve seen, although a bit more in the US (like 2.5%). I would be fine with CCP providing a way to opt out of the system for those who are concerned they can’t use it appropriately, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to take the option away completely from the 98% of the population who don’t have an addiction and will use it responsibly.

In fact, as far as I can tell, video game addiction itself has higher rates of occurrence.

In the end, the decision about whether to participate should be left with the individual.

In fairness, CCP is under different management today than it was back in 2014.

Remember when CCP said they had to ban casinos because 13 year olds who play the game might be exposed to gambling and they had to think of the children?

That makes sense. How big an impact do you think these will have on plex prices? I am assuming it’s going to depend on how popular they are - I know that sounds kind of captain obvious, right?

So if I understand this right, it’s a basic raffle system:

A character puts an item up for ‘raffle’ for x time, specifying both the amount of ‘raffle tickets’ (HyperNodes), and the cost of each ‘raffle ticket’ available for the item. They then pay a tax (5% in the example) along with y amount of HyperCores (purchased from the NES or market) to start the ‘raffle’. Once all the tickets are sold (or the time expires? Or does it fail at that point with costs going back to ticket buyers?) a ‘raffle ticket’ is chosen at random and the owner receives the item.

If this is how this works, I honestly don’t see any issue with the underlying concept. This isn’t loot boxes or anything ridiculous like that like some people are claiming. The only participant who buys NES items is the person who’s actually raffling off an item. The cost of HyperCores is going to be the main thing determining if people do this for fun or if it becomes a dead mechanic.

I personally don’t have a problem with gambling being apart of a game in this way (especially given the much higher-than-average age group playing it), as long as the necessary steps are taken to prevent it from encouraging gambling addictions.

SOOOOO you have literally introduced gambling into your game… I mean WTF!

Why? why would you think this is a good idea when countless studies have shown a connection with in game loot box mechanics and gambling. You have seriously not thought this through.

No thanks.

I don’t think this will go over well in countries where gambling is illegal.

Was hoping a new citadel structure (finally!) getting released.

Only found a questionable new monetization.

Left disappointed.

LOLCP (I am personally indifferent on the gambling aspect but the principle says a lot more to me than that. Im sort of considering if I should let my accounts lapse this time up. I have a bad feeling that this is only the start of this rabbit hole. Really should have seen this coming a mile off after the sellout)
