Introducing the HyperNet Relay

How is this not gambling?

Gambling is the playing of a game of chance.

This is a game of chance, unless you buy all the tickets.

EDIT: you can agree or not agree that gambling is ok in a game, but whichever way you look at this, it is gambling.

How is this relevant?

I tell you: it’s not…

People are getting hung up on the question of whether it’s the kind of gambling that is regulated by governments, or the kind of gambling that happens all the time and nobody pays attention to it.

This system is likely to be the latter, not the former, because of the inability to convert winnings into real life currency, and because you do not have to actually purchase tickets or chances with real life currency (although you can). This is why every single giveaway you see on TV comes with a disclaimer (“no purchase necessary”) that essentially provides an exemption that makes the system legal with no need for regulation.

This system was designed specifically to be completely free - a player using an alpha account, paying isk generated in-game only can participate in this system, both as a buyer and a seller. There is no requirement at any point in the process for that individual to have to buy anything with RL currency. The option will be there, but it’s not a requirement. That gets them around the vast majority of gambling regulation.

You’re not exactly known for your depth of insight though.

A raffle or lottery is, by definition, gambling; whether or not CCP’s implementation falls under the various gambling regulations remains to be seen.

IANAL but in my opinion CCP risk running afoul of legislation that regulates such activities, regulation that is designed to prevent minors from gambling.

The implementation appears to be one where the “chips” are purchasable via real money, albeit indirectly. My concern is that Eve is a game that allows younger players, introducing an activity that is seen as gambling where part of the audience are minors is bound to be controversial.

How this plays out is anybody’s guess, I certainly won’t be indulging.

Prohibition did more to help alcohol sales than any other act of the 20th Century.

War on Drugs?

Gun Control?

People are going to do what people are going to do. Gambling should be part of Eve Online. It’s “supposed to be” a sandbox, no?

So somerblink had to go, but this is fine?

Personally my only problem with it is it being a PLEX sink instead of an isk-sink only.

I doubt CCP will use RMT.

CCP can’t allow 3rd parties to rmt. So blink had to go. Had less to do with gambling aspect and more to do with RMT blink was engaging in.

It’s obvious that CCP is fine with ANYTHING as long as the RMT goes to them. The problem is that they have a Monopoly. That’s why we have to pay $20.00 for $15.00 worth of PLEX :credit_card:. CCP is terrified of competition and missing out on :100:% of the cash flow. :money_with_wings::money_with_wings::money_with_wings:

It’s their game. Name any game company that wants a 3rd party to make money off their intellectual property without compensation lol. Your statement is a joke because all game companies will want a monopoly on monetizing the use of their ip/service.

So, you’re fine with a 33% markup on the PLEX to ISK conversion rate? I’m not.

It doesn’t matter if your ok with it. Why should CCP let 3rd parties make money off its game without CCP agreeing to it and/or compensation? The fact you don’t like it doesn’t matter. In fact it’s CCP’s duty to protect their intellectual property legally. Blink and others were in violation and shut down because of it. At the time people screamed for an in game option to replace them. People also wanted an in game open before that time because many of the out of game gambling options were scams. And now they have it and people moan. Lol

Thanks for making my point. It doesn’t matter if you like the HyperNode option…it’s going to happen.

CCP: “here is our awesome new system for gambling in EVE”.

Duro Peripar: “THERE IS NO GAMBLING”.

In the face of that kind of delusional denial of reality I’m honestly not sure what to say.

This is a GOOD way for CCP/PA to make profit, which is the SOLE reason why some here are against it.

Lolwut? People are not against it because CCP could be successful and profitable, we’re against it because it’s F2P cash shop garbage that encourages gambling addiction and sacrifices the long term future of the game for short term profits.

The fictional universe is supposed to be a sandbox. That does not mean that all conceivable activity in EVE must be possible, even when that activity has real-world consequences for the people behind the characters.

Nope. The anti-lootbox laws still apply to games where you can earn in-game currency without cash shop purchases (just at such a slow rate that you’re encouraged to get out your credit card and buy more) and the items in the lootbox can’t be legally sold outside of the game. This is exactly the kind of mechanic that is being targeted.

The Catholic Church has Bingo… Is the church evil or irresponsible?

CCP is advertising for https://www.twitch.tv/streamfleet which is raffling PLEX and stuff for charity. Should this activity be prohibited? I think not.

There is a huge difference between a local charity bingo/raffle/etc and on-demand online gambling. The church has only occasional opportunities to participate with few games per event and limits on how much a person can spend. You can’t show up at the church bingo night and spend $10,000 playing hundreds of simultaneous games. With the EVE gambling, on the other hand, there will almost certainly be unlimited on-demand gambling because every lottery is guaranteed profit for the people running it. How much you gamble in EVE will only be limited by how much real life money you can afford to spend on it.

(And yes, the church is 100% evil and should be dismantled for crimes against humanity. But that’s a separate issue from their minor acts of gambling.)

The vast majority of the anti-loot box legislation has centered around the trade of real life currency for the boxes, not in-game currency. And in each of those situations, the game that was regulated simply turned off the system for people in those countries.

Regardless, this system is not loot boxes. The mechanic is completely different.
