Astroboy circa 1960. A machine (rogue drone) that grabs other machines and integrates them into itself. The hardware would not be the issue. It would be rogue drone software that gets out of hand. Even the “normal” rogue drones would have very negative standing to such machine malignancies.

This would fit with the idea of left over machines from the “Old Days”. Very big and dangerous AI doomsday machines. The Berserker scifi series. They would fly in and mess up your stations, gates, PI, whatever.
But no. Just leave Eve alone and let folks figure out stuff and play.
Basically the junk we see in the mission sites is taken over by a new type of AI.
I still like the station killer idea myself. A storyline would follow as Capsuleers piece together the puzzle of where and how the Station Killer came to be, while other Capsuleers endeavor to defend their citadels from the Station Killer.
The event would be similar to when the Triglavians first attacked mixed with Incursion events. In order to reduce the Station Killers defenses, items would have to be taken from the wrecks of defeated smaller ships of the Station Killer clan. When enough of the items had been collected and assembled, a two day process, Station Killer technology now being used by New Eden, would cause the defenses of the Station Killer to slowly weaken the more that are assembled and launched. The defenses of the Station Killer would never drop below 65%. To make things interesting the Station Killer would have a fleet of frigates, destroyers and cruisers with it that attack the assembled arrays as well as the players. Every time an array is destroyed, the defenses of the Station Killer increase until the destroyed array is replaced. Station Killer fleets would roam the system looking for Capsuleers until the Station Killer arrived. The Station Killer roaming fleets would then warp out of system. The Station Killer would arrive, randomly on the third day after the first smaller Station Killer ship arrives in system.
Instead of a space Kraken why not a space Karen… it would constantly demand to talk to your corp CEO about your bad behaviour and you could not put it on your mute list, filling every chat channel you are in with its posts (but only you seeing the messages).
