Is highsec ganking still a thing?

Is highsec ganking still a thing?

My current playstyle consists in things that would make me a target to the HS ganker menace.

I run missions in high sec in a vargur, mine, build things and haul them to Jita to sell, and buy things, haul them around from Hek, Rens, and Jita to resell them.

I have never been ganked once.

I am not the best ever player ever, I’m pretty slack 90% of the time.

I just follow simple ideas like fit a tank, keep one eye on local, scout ahead, learn the cloak/mwd trick, and learn to dscan.

Sure, occasionally I see tornadoes sitting on gates, or the space princesses’ crew fly through.

Just keep your wits about you and don’t get suckered into making bad decisions and they are fun really.

Ganking is not a problem at all.

I think, and I would know, if you play properly it is IMPOSSIBLE to gank you. If you get ganked, you did SOMETHING wrong, and you need to get better. Try harder. My entire playstyle is built upon exploiting mistakes. When people don’t make these mistakes, I literally cannot kill them. If you can’t escape me in Highsec, you’ve got no chance in low! My SNUFF alts will cyno on you.

Most Common Mistakes:

  1. AFK
  2. bad fit
  3. bad attitude

The space princess speaks the truth.

As long as players are paying attention they should see folks coming and not get caught on grid.

If you are regularly getting caught on grid you are doing something wrong.

Her crew is not particularly subtle, when local fills up you should align, and either be mashing the dscan if you can warp quickly, move out and cloak, or warp to a safe or station.

Space is not safe. Players need to take action to protect yourself. The counter play to ganking is strong, but players need to take the initiative and not be caught on grid.

Yeah,

just for fun I checked the last 5 “ganking losses” of my alliance. Here they are:

Using a 300M Exhumer in a 0.5 Sec system, no tank fit and not watching local or Dscan. A whole bunch of bad ideas.

Same guy, this time offering ORE Miners that make a gank a LOT more worthwile. Again not fitting significant tank and obviously missing the local spike, not watching Dscan and/or not having the most active ganking corp set to red standing so yo get a clear warning in local quite some time ahead before they land on your grid.

Afk mining rare ore in a 0.5 sec system, all the lowslots full of greed, mediocre tank at best. What can possibly happen?

Autopiloting through Bagodan, a known ganking system, in a ship that can do covert warping. Well done, Sir!

Abyssalrunning 2 Jumps from Jita. Great idea!

And we could make this list longer and longer and longer. Every single one of these guys has simply begged for being killed. It would be a real shame if such kills wouldn’t be possible any more. They are a great opportunitiy to remind people to pay attention and make clever decisions when flying around in a universe full of other players that might want to kill them on every chance they get.

Big thanks to the gankers here, they are creating better players by teaching them lessons and showing them their mistakes. And the cost of the loss is pretty much neglibile compared ot the knowledge and awareness gained - if the ganked one choses to do so.

I warped to a random asteroid belt and was loading my guns when this guy landed on me and started mining. I wasn’t keen to shoot him, but he just ignored me, so I decided to introduce myself. Here’s a tip: don’t ignore me.

I could look at these shoulders all day.

If you keep talking to me like that, I’m just gonna allow it.

Well, you know I could whisper like this, all night into that ear.

@CrestoftheStars

I never heard of anyone using 12 ravens to suicide gank…anything, ever in highsec.

Can you provide more detail? I’m really intrigued. Using battleships to suicide gank a nightmare is new to me, much less anything else for that matter.

Anyone else ever use battleships to gank someone in highsec? It sounds really novel, and something I might like to try doing. Just for the experience.

I mean, I have thought about using megas…at Xmas, just for funsies; but, I’ve never known anyone to actually do this.

@Aiko_Danuja as I acknowledge your mastery of all things related to suicide ganking, have you ever used a battleship to suicide gank someone in highsec?

I’m just really thunderstruck by this idea…

Yes, but I doubt this story about the ravens.

I might encourage that!

You must be very new to the game. About 10 years or something ago battleships were the standard shiptype for ganking miners. You just fitted one or two battleships with smartbombs, parked them near a barge and started the disco.
The basis for this was the old insurance system that since got changed. For a premium insurance level you were able to almost get back the full value of the ship including the fitting.

For example, we tried to smartbomb a Pulk of 30 Covetors, Hulks and Porpoise that were semi-afk massmultiboxmining in HS. Unfortunately our warpin was a guy who hadn’t ganked before and we totally overlooked to instruct him properly, so we landed on a spot where the majority of the target fleet wasn’t within the SB range of everyone, so they could escape. Pretty much a failed gank attempt considering the investment vs. the kills. However, we decided to blow up the ships anyway, just to take out the few that were in range and say “hello”.

So yes, if the opportunity is right, Battleships can absolutely be used. For single Targets however, Oracles, Nagas, Tornadoes and Talos’ are simply more cost efficient today.

I started during the “catalyst era”, I’m supposing. Though, you’ve jogged my memory, I did have a vet, well, a vet to me, this is about 10 or 11 years ago, describe bombing a mining ship with, I think it was, an apocalypse, if I remember correctly. She bombed some player that had “ticked” her off.

@Syzygium

I’ve used oracles (once), tornadoes and talos’, and catalysts, and on a special occasion atrons (on drones); but, never battleships…..

Guys! I’ve gotten stodgy in my thinking! Obviously, I need to expand my arsenal,

You learn something new (even if it’s old) every day.

sry, I fixed the link and sorted the sides properly. After looking at it, including the pods it’s almost 50/50 in ISK efficiency already… goddamn if we had taken down all 30 miners that would have been a hilarious report

Nightmares are expensive…mine are around 1.7bn fitted….and a completely unfitted Nightmare is 1.25 billion.

A completely unfitted Raven is 232m, which times 12 is almost 2.8bn. You’re talking at least 3bn overall if you include added DPS. So you’d have to be going for a Nightmare that will DROP over 3bn…and get 100% from the loot fairy… in order to make even a penny of profit.

Given that the Nightmare itself is 1.25bn even with no fittings…..the loot fairy would have to drop 100% and the overall ship would have to be worth 4.25bn. That’s a ludicrously blingy Nightmare. Not impossible, but anyone going around in one has a big ‘Gank Me’ sign on them and gets no sympathy from me.

But I doubt this ‘12 Ravens gank a Nightmare’ story is even true.

Considering this guy’s last killboard entry is from 2008, maybe it happened in that era. Of course he wouldn’t tell you that he didn’t play for 20 years before stating such nonsense.
