As much fun as this thread has been, I’d like to sum up the accomplishments of it and declare it officially closed.
Thankee for coming to this EVE talk. Remember to help a newbro kill Dagan and also bait a newbro in hi sec and blap them to keep the balance.
Just some advice based on around 6 years of playing - when it comes to gankers if you find a clever counter to it you are best keeping it to yourself - as soon as people start using it regularly in any kind of numbers the gankers will adapt, infiltrate if it is organised with public groups, etc.
Why would I want high sec immune to ganking?

I dunno about elite PVP but it is possible to take ganking to an elite level - understanding the game mechanics and how to manipulate them better than most, how to manipulate people, take out targets most can’t manage, etc.
Or you could just sit in a Tornado with a ship scanner somewhere around Jita - you won’t have to wait long.

It’s good because it helps the destruction/production cycle and increases risk, supporting arguments for increased reward for highsec. It’s balanced because there are counters.
Depends - not much to counter when some random corp decide to engage your officer fit PVE boat with 1400mm :s

Seems if someone if flying an Officer fit PVE boat, there are plenty of things they can do to counter the possibility of a gank and/or survive if they screw up enough for gankers to get close enough to activate their guns.
However, exactly where the balance sits is subjective and everyone will have a different view.
I get it that you feel the balance is in the wrong place and safety should be increased in highsec.
My view is rather, if there were no counters, then changes would be needed, but where there are counters and people don’t use them, then that’s their choice and they should do what they already can before CCP step in an hold their hand more.
Fat chance on the ganks I’ve done - the target almost certainly had no idea until moments before they were relieved of their ship. (One of them we literally held off swapping to the gank ships until they were in warp and committed, another we masqueraded as PVE ships until they were in position).
Never said that neither do I hold that position - my posts in that respect have been all about what happens after the gank.
Not all gankers are god level I guess.
Then they screwed up, even if gankers were going to appear out of a wormhole.
It’s a risk. They should have prepared for.
I edited my post above with a couple of examples - in one case we waited until the target has jumped the gate and gone into warp before reshipping. In another we set ourselves up to look like just another set of PVE ships.
EDIT: I can’t take credit myself though - a couple of people in alliance put in some serous leg work on those ones.

The part where I differ is the action itself. To me, there is no such thing as a counter against the single action of the gank in effect. There are ways to avoid it, yes… by gathering intel, scouting, messing around with the field by acting as CONCORD bait… etc. But a seasoned gank setup knows that perhaps better.
A well played gank is never without the element of surprise. Once you’re locked and fired upon, only a poorly executed gank is survivable.
At that point is where I think something interesting could be introd’.
A pilot could save the ship & cargo it if there is some creative mechanic that could be used giving that extra chance.
Is it necessary? No. People have flown stupid and forever will. Even if such extra is added, will make no difference on how stupid can people go.
But it would be fun, of course… by providing the lower ground a chance of similar level of fun.
It doesn’t mean that such fun doesn’t exist, and it happens on a failed gank… Surviving it is quite the joy but in such cases, It’s because the gank fails. Not because your tank or warp… it’s a failed gank setup.
Do you think having such “thing” would be too much of a counter? That people will stop flying stupid? That it is wrong because in no event shall the ganker confront an element of surprise farther than a scan’s reach?
This I broadly agree on - but sometimes no matter how careful you are someone else is better. As before where I have an opinion is post the gank not before or during it.
This is pure truth. Part of the reasons why I differentiate the action in effect from everything prior.

Avoiding it is literally a counter…
I can’t take any credit for it - but they had no chance - the key when stalking a wary player is to only show your hand once they’ve committed themselves to a situation i.e. initiated warp to somewhere they will be exposed. They wouldn’t have known there was going to be players there known or unknown until they landed.
EDIT: PS quality > quantity - I didn’t do it much but over all my characters it is almost 60bn worth of ganks.
