A great many of the problems people have with EVE seeming slow, buggy, etc, are actually caused by their own computers. I’ve just done a complete Windows re-install, and EVE is performing better than ever…and the colours are better too.
A few things everyone should do regularly…
Check Event Viewer ( its in Control Panel, Windows Tools ) for errors, particularly bad block errors showing as ‘Disk’ in the list.
On the ‘Search’ window, enter Windows Powershell, right click on that and select ‘run as administrator’. Then when you get to the DOS window type sfc /scannow
That command checks the file system for corrupt files, and often fixes them. You’d be surprised how often system files get corrupted.
If it finds errors and says it cannot fix them, then run this command…
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
This is a very handy function that allows you to fix Windows without doing a reinstall.
Sometimes not even that works, and you have to reinstall Windows. At which point you have to have previously created a ‘restore disk’…preferably on a flash drive…or you are screwed. Creating a restore disk should be the first thing anyone does on buying a PC.
Also, download an app called CrystalDisk Info…which allows you to monitor your hard drive or SSD for faults. My PC was giving loads of ‘Disk’ errors, but that tool was saying the disk was fine. People can think SSDs are borkened when in fact its the boot files or other such startup files that are corrupted. I reinstalled Windows…a pain in the butt…but everything works perfectly now.
Oh what fun…setting up my EVE Overview all over again.
And i’ll keep playing EVE on Linux like the last about 18 years since i made the switch.
Never had those annoying things ever again, where the operating system and its updates themselves break the computer over time and require you to do manual intervention to restore health or reinstall the system.
Apart from switching once from openSUSE to Debian, i always upgraded from the previous release to the next and never had to reinstall or restore health ever again.
Right, so you can reinstall your operating system, and then have to reinstall all your software, reset all your settings including your EVE, and lose any files you haven’t backed up to an external drive or the cloud.
Same here. In the bad old days it would take several hours just to reinstall Windows itself from a CD…and then you’d have 265 Windows updates, which would take more hours. These days its 20 minutes from a flash drive. I always have all the .exe files for all my apps saved anyway…so no need to search for those. I have all apps disabled on startup…even Steam…so PC starts up in seconds.
A lot of people would have thrown away my PC with so many disk errors, but I knew the real issue was boot files. Not a single disk error since reinstalling Windows, which re-creates the boot partition. Oh…and as an extra benefit I see that Nvidia have now created an RTX driver just for gamers…which I installed.
Actually…the thing that has taken longest is setting up my EVE overview. I could not remember how to set up a ‘Suspects’ tab that would only display criminals and suspects…though I have now worked it out again. It baffles me that EVE stores all my 300 or so kills, all my 500 ship fittings, all my ISK and transactions and emails…yet its too much effort for it to store my Overview.
And network issues as well. I don’t remember what it was, but I once had some kind of a weird error in the client, and I was certain at the time it happened, that the problem was on Fenris’ side. When I investigated, I turned out to be the only one with the problem, and the issue resolved under a different network.
I’m playing EVE on a cell hotspot, believe it or not, and most of the time it performs without issues. I don’t get DCs often, and I don’t have lag or anything. It works much better than most would imagine. But there can be some occasions where it causes hiccups, and they are not always obvious that they’re caused by your network connection.
One sure way to tell is if you are the only one reporting the problem, or when no-one else can reproduce your errors, then it’s most likely on your end somewhere.
Remember wifi runs about 50% slower than a direct CAT5 cable. If or when possible check the wifi by swapping out CAT5 cables. One bad cable can make a world of hurt.
Next I use Ookla to test the speed. Current speed to the default nearby server is 890/41 Mbps. Since I am NA east coast, I switch to other servers;
San Diego - ATT 715/40 Mbps
Tokyo - Verizon 332/32
Hong Kong - CMHK Broadband 472/10
Dusseldorf - Net Mountains 653/40
Reykjavik - Siminn 667/40
With this kind of network speed, I don’t expect any key lag. Keyboard lag is where I press a button and my packets are uploaded to the server, the server scans the system I am playing in for response, and returns packets to my client for processing. Check the in game network monitor for any huge difference in speed, if you suspect network error.
I am working with Linux OS, but I fully admit, Windows games are built to run in Windows. I believe this game offers a Mac client to download. I too will continue to use the Linux OS, because of all the malware directed at Microsoft Windows, and their vision of what my OS should be does not appeal to me.
Also a few notes on hardware, I take my machines down and blast them out with compressed air. Lock the fans with a small piece of tape or unplug them, they will become wind generators otherwise. Never rest your PC at floor level especially on carpeted floors, your PC in not a Roomba!
I find it fascinating how the people who seem to have problems with many things to the point they can’t stop posting about it, also seem to have problems with their windows and other software.
I am not attempting to derail the thread into an OS debate. I just noticed how networking seemed to be overlooked.
Since you asked, I can only answer about my own personal experience. I chose Linux the same as others chose to stick with Windows. I left Windows in 2010 when it became abundantly transparent they were making the OS bigger not better. I was huge fan of Windows XP, but then they made Vista and lied on TV commercials. Microsoft continued to make poor choices with the OS, and it shows in ME and 8. Technically 10 and 11 are not as bad, but bloated with analytics. Most users who run Arch Linux OS have stated, they want to know what is on the OS. While I have tinkered with Arch it is not my preference. I want an OS with just the OS a clock and a few games, remember how Windows XP was before? I get to choose my browser, I get to choose the apps, and no AI or helpers.
Macs are a very unique animal. The original Apple was built in a garage by Steve Wozniak. I have a lot of respect for the creator. He has stated in video interviews, he is not a fan of AI, and the decisions companies have taken using AI. Meanwhile it is my understanding Microsoft plans to invest more AI into the next generation OS. It might mean some people will not be able to simply use a script to debloat their OS in the near future.
I hope this enlightens where people are coming from by what choices they made to use their OS. Again this is not an attempt to derail Gloria’s topic. Repair and maintenance is very important no matter the user’s OS.
