I think need drives conflict. Players have settled in an areas of space that fulfill their needs they don’t need to take raw materials from other areas. In addition rare materials are not that rare and resources don’t dry-up - forcing raids or even a nomadic lifestyle would drive conflict.

Much like taking away the need for different types of ice stagnated the market & removed a conflict driver … when was the last time the goons did a high sec ice blockade ?

Literally not been the case in EVE for over 6 years. Greed drives most of the conflicts, and boredom. Hate fuels the rest. 2014’s Halloween War? Stainwagon wanted their space back after N3 pushed them out… to set up renters. 2015 was marked by a bunch of small wars from boredom. 2016’s big conflict was about hate. It sure as hell wasn’t the case that everyone in the MBC ‘needed’ space in the north.

xDeath getting pushed out of their space 2 years ago? Greed from HRE wanting to run the renter programs. PL taking half of Providence? Greed over the station overhaul. Legacy pushing them out? Boredom and personal animus after PL kicked them out of the north in 2016. Last year’s northern war? Revenge—we didn’t even take any of that space. Last year’s southern war? More greed, this time from WinterCo, and it got repulsed.

Unless you don’t have a super umbrella. Then a whole herd of Procurers or something with a couple of Porpoises will do the trick just fine. The Rorqual is obviously the vastly superior choice if isk and risk is not an issue. This is not always going to be the case. The isk spent on a single Rorqual will fund a very sizable amount of barges and porpoises that will vastly outperform that one Rorqual and losing the entire damn operation to enemies is a cheap enough setback that it’s offset in an hour of bearing.

In highsec? Compared to belts, the moons have some pretty swank ores.

… of course, this is only in comparison to the belts and sites.

Would you need to raid or move if the yield of Ytterbite, Xenotime, Loparite and Monazite faded to near zero amounts over a 12month period of extraction.

What would you do if you no longer had large amounts of these rare minerals and then there was an astro-geological event that caused a bloom of rare moon goo in the drone regions or some other area of null?

This has been mentioned as a possible conflict driver before. Problem is, nowadays the entities large enough to grab and make use of sizable chunks of space also invest vast amounts of time, resources and work into developing and holding that space. Grinding sov is pure unadulterated cancer, as well as having to remove all hostile infrastructure, while holding or tearing down your own if you’re moving, etc etc etc…

… it wouldn’t be driving conflict so much as it’d drive mindless tedious fuckin’ grinds. It’d be boredom to the point where you’re better off just doing some diplo work and blue each other’s damn bearing fleets or something.

There’s greed, and then there’s just the game currently being designed to be 95% tedium requiring actual lobotomies to keep people from desperately strangling themselves to death with a mouse cable to escape from the most boring hell in existence.

There needs to be more ways you can mess with hostile space. More siphoning mechanics and so on, allowing for combat ops to have bearing purposes and financial incentives as well as getting fights out of it all. Fights that aren’t cancerous fuckin’ sov wanding fleets.

We already mine out the moongoo in 4 regions by using 4-600 rorquals at a time with the supercapital fleet logged in and at a mid-point ready to jump to defend them. Now you want to send us roaming that way? Do you think that’s going to be at all good for any group smaller than say… PanFam? Heck, it won’t even be good for them. We’d just roll into the region, glass everything but the refineries that are already pulling up chunks, and shoot the chunks when they’re in the right spot, and drop the rorq + supers.

We literally call these thing ‘locust fleets’, and had a long discussion within the directorate about whether we were going to consume our way through the North in the last war. [Edit: Well, maybe not that long. We laughed about it some and then decided it was :effort, as I think about it. I still maintain it would’ve been funny to tell Lux ‘we’re going to war so we can make you run locust fleets on the other end of space, too!’]

What do you think will even slow us down in that scenario? If Delve is no longer useful, why would we care about defending it? If we’re guaranteed to be bringing 1000+ titans to take your space some time soon, why would you try to hold it? Just grab what you can ahead of the invaging Mongoons, uproot, and keep running. For all some of our guys mocked NCdot and PanFam for not trying to defend Tribute or Tenal, it was the right choice, strategically.

I think that something has to be throw into the mix to alleviate stagnation be it a famine of raw materials or NCP conflict.
Locust fleets sound all well and good but there is a difference between doing something because you want to & doing something because you have to.

Even if it’s a CCP created Sleeper invasion that makes a random area of space unlivable for months at a time: not the little poke they recently gave null sec… but a Total War scenario with the sleepers being protagonists that destroy everything in their path with only capital fleets being able to survive the onslaught - and given how capsuleers have treated sleepers over the years a spot of genocide wouldn’t be amiss - The only options being you leave or you die

Of course I can already hear the whines about breaking the sandbox… and I would have to agree that a sandbox should be a sandbox but I do think CCP needs to be more aggressive & extreme in making the game hard.

And then what? How long does this ‘total war scenario’ play out? What prevents everyone from putting their supers and titans in space, safe-logged, with all their crap in the holds and all their regular capitals sitting in a lowsec station?

How long do you make nullsec utterly unlivable in an attempt to drive off paying customers who can just stop paying and go do something else until you’re done, then come back en masse again with no loss of capability?

You are right the root cause of nullsec stagnation is the paying customer - more precise the plex buying isk grinders - remove this mechanic and what you have left are players that are grinding to build something that will be used in-game.

The difference between paying for an account with a PLEX someone else paid money for, and paying for it with money yourself, is pretty much negligible in terms of ‘what you’re using your ISK on’. A rorq + excavs costs 10b. Once you pay that, (or pay half that, if you’re using t2 drones), you’re not paying for that ship anymore.

And paying for the account in cash doesn’t change the ability to say ‘I’m pausing my account now via a ticket, I’ll come back when they stop doing this total war crap’.

Can’t say the notion of tying sandbox shake-ups to more PvE nonsense appeals. Yeah, that will fix what ails Eve, surely. The trick to sandboxes being sustainable tends to be the players in the sandbox, not the spades and buckets and dog turds the sandbox owners scatter around. Want to maintain said players, they’ll need incentives to do stuff that isn’t your average minecraft adventure of building four walls, fortifying, then stripmining your way to the bottom layer. Or in Eve terminology, finding out how many Rorquals your space can support (all of them as it turns out) and how many keepstars you can fit in that space, and then how many titans you can fit in those keepstars.

The difficulty there is that there’s a lot of very simple lists of vague stuff we can do about that:

  1. Reward PvP activity. Give incentives to go to war, fite and adventure, etc.
  2. Figure out a scaling system, introducing massive diminishing returns on large coalitions, while letting smaller alliance compete.
  3. Differentiate rewards between Sov gameplay and Nomad gameplay. Make wandering/homeless alliances viable but different.
  4. Delete the accounts of, and send assassins to the homes of anyone who’s actively beared in the last decade.
  5. Delay local across all of Eve. The whole damn game. Give locator agents a few more powers and fewer limitations.
  6. Be better at worldbuilding and driving the factions of Eve forwards.

And so on and so forth. That list? Bloody fuckin’ useless. All of them would be helpful towards shaking up the sandbox and giving new life to a stagnated New Eden, but almost none of them are tangible actual solutions. Some may or may even be slightly tongue in cheek. A little bit. Each and every one of those, even the tongue in cheek ones, each requires a very long list of actual points, solutions, mechanics and changes to actually do any good, and none of them will work on their own.

And no, the sandbox does not need to be hard. It needs to be complex and rewarding. This is not a trivial thing to achieve, but part of that will have to be making mindless grinding the least rewarding activity in Eve. If what you’re doing can be done largely afk, then it shouldn’t be particularly rewarding compared to someone doing it the ‘active’ way.

tl;dr, it’s hot as balls here and I’m too braindead to try playing games, so instead I ramble, rave and shiptoast and won’t even remember this tomorrow. I can’t wait until climate change really accelerates. I’ll be suckstarting a loaded revolver within a decade at this rate. So, what’s everyone else up to that is not paddling around in their own broiling juices?

The developer here as it was not, and no, they do not care about the opinion of the players !!! They want to create a new hell for small corporations. Paid this action, that’s all! As everyone dies, so be pleased !!! Thank you, CCP, that you so hate those who have been feeding these years and feeding !!! Good luck in new stupid-ideas that bring pain and disappointment in the once great game !!!

So, if you no longer have the ability to buy Plex someone else has paid for… you grind and buy yourself a Rorq… then what ?
If you have no reason to use it to grind for plex …what opportunities open up for you ?

No, seriously, I was literally about to fire up minecraft when I read that, and started laughing. I’ve been trying to get motived to redo my 1:1-scale survival-mode Minas Tirith since the server I was building it on went down.

I dunno, I might do some themeparking if I can talk some people into the right other games.

Judging by how they began to work, narrow-minded people from CCP, to call them a developer, the language does not turn, then everything goes to the bottom !!! Ideas are not normal, and “we chop everything off the shoulder” !!! The question has already been raised to leave only a paid subscription, and the plexes for everything else in the game! But if you look at the stupid ideas, the introduction of “Alpha” and “Omega” acanthus, then the question of “adequacy” can be forgotten !!! We are waiting for the complete discharge of the game !!!

… are any of those not awful at this point? Almost all of them are F2P and thus have to design themselves around paying to reduce soulcrushing grinds, and the few that aren’t… well, are they any good? I mean, I seem to recall FFXIV was pretty swank but I burned out so hard leading a raiding FC and doing the ‘end-game grind’.

I mean, is there even one of those themeparks that aren’t 99% grind in the end?
