Variant 1 is to “rent” a highclass WH, which means you live on a station owned by some big and powerful corp, which can then help in case you get attacked. In return you pay a part of your income you make in that hole to the protectors.
You can still be attacked while in open space, but the station you live in is pretty safe, because any attacker knows that there will be either a strong defender coming or even if he is successful in killing the station, he might get a visit in his own home to understand it is not a good idea to attack renters under the protection of a large group.

Variant 2 is that you “join” some (bluetrain)-network of corporations that promise to protect you if you come under attack, in return you aid them if one of them comes under attack. For that variation you should have some combat potential and not just be a bunch of ratters

Variant 3 is that you will be scammed. People take your money, maybe even let you move in. Then close all the exits and burn all the stuff you brougt in and loot it… Yeah, EVE can be a dark place.

Variant 4 is that you will be used for content (which isn’t nessessarily a bad thing). You get initial help to get you into such a hole and then be another target during the large group’s rage-rolling events (or logoff-trapping you should you do Dread ratting in your hole). You know, the larger WH groups get pretty bored if they can’t fight anything to fight any more so they recently became more inviting and helpful in order to re-populate JSpace. If you are good enough and willing to learn about the mechanics and tactics in JSpace, thats a symbiotic relationship healthy for both sides. You can grow in wealth, power and skill (over time), they have something to shoot once in a while.
