If someone’s mission item drops from a wreck (say they got killed at the gates after they opened a yellow box) if you get the same mission from that agent, can you shortcut the mission just by handing the stuff in?
I believe that as long as you have the item in the station with said agent you should be able to skip the space stuff. Unless the mission has another trigger of course.

And you would be correct. As for the mission item, the server only identifies items as one unique type of some other type, like for example 100 Iron S small railgun ammo charges.
Since no item has a “belongs to character X and must not be touched by anyone else” - identifier or key, if you got it somewhere else than the usual places, they won’t mind. It would be the same item either way.
