MODS PLEASE LOCK - Jim’s ruined another one 👍

Title speaks for itself.

Is Suicide Ganking contributing to player numbers decreasing?

Are they killing the Game ?

Are people who leave the game because of the threat of suicide ganks cut out to be EVE players?

Or would they have eventually quit anyway after losing their first ship?

Is it killing the game if these particular players leave?

If enough of them are then yes. In order to survive the game needs players that pay subs and a high enough player base to attract sponsors. Anything that causes player to leave is bad for the game

Not every game is a good fit for every player.

Some players don’t like puzzle games, other don’t like racing games, some don’t like shooting games, others don’t like multiplayer games.

Not every person trying this game has to like EVE, even if they initially thought they liked spaceships. They might not like the open-endedness of a sandbox, the top-down commands to their ship instead of flying it first-person view, or they might not like the heavy PvP aspect of this game.

I think it’s healthy for both EVE and the players who tried EVE but found it not to be a good match if those players find a better game to play that suits their tastes, before they waste time on a game they don’t enjoy and before EVE again gets complaints from players who aren’t enjoying the core gameplay of this game.

While it’s obviously good if EVE gets more players, those players first and foremost should like the gameplay.

Should we not as players do what’s best to help retain the player base ?

Being an ass to folk isn’t the best way to do that .

Suicide ganking has been a part of this game since m0o was a thing. I dont really think suicide ganking is an issue in the larger scheme of things when it comes to players leaving. Sure it can drive some away, but its also brings in others.

This is a good point.

When I was looking for a new game to play in 2017 and read about EVE this PvP danger was a huge positive point for me drawing me to this game.

Not the spaceships, I mostly played fantasy MMOs before, but the entire game being an open PvP world with loot on death.

Stories of ganks, scams, fights and a dangerous universe intrigued me.

We’ll probably find out next FanFest (or the next blog) on how Exordium is doing, ie: exceeding or falling short of expectations.

Will be interesting to see .

False. It doesn’t matter how many players try and leave. There only needs to be a core constituency (if you will) of players who will stick around in the long term. Income from their expenditure on the game is what pays the monthly bills and over-the-line. And get this right – EVE is a long-term game. It’s not something you play for weeks or months. This is a years-long experience and investment, or an alternate reality, for those of us who stick around in the long run. And we are the ones Fenris needs. Not the guys who come and go.

EVE does need to attract and appeal to new fresh players on a regular basis for the game to be growing instead of shrinking, though. Out of let’s say every 1000 guys who try the game, 10 will stay for good. And it is these 10 out of 1000 (let’s say) we are after. Not the other 990. They reflect the growth of the game (which is slow, but still likely positive).

On a sidenote, the main revenue coming in that actually pays for this game and Fenris’ paycheck, is PLEX not the subs anymore. Subs are still in all likelihood a significant % of that revenue, but PLEX sales is just as relevant, if not more relevant (I don’t have the numbers, but a good guess).

If there were any statistics that would back up the claim that “ganking” or other piracy-related PvP activities would hurt the long-term health of the game by driving out players in masses, CCP/FC would have removed it a looooooooooooong time ago.

But there are none. The only thing that is true is that every some weeks or months a very tiny bunch of fresh chars show up here at the forums throwing wild claims around. And then, after being utterly intellectually defeated in every single topic they make and not gaining any noticable support for their false statements from “the community” they claim to speak for… they disappear. Probably they realized how bad of a fool they made themselves look like.

It’s just an endless circle, people who are pretty bad at the game claim stupid things, get corrected by people who are actually good at the game, then vanishing and making some new accounts to repeat the same stupid claims a few weeks or months later. Probably after having lost some more ships due to their stupid decisions in the game. :man_shrugging:

Ah…a new take on an old Sufi tale…

A Sufi was walking down a path, when he came across a Devil sitting quietly at the side of the path. Surprised that the Devil was not up to any mischief, the Sufi commented…

" Devil…how is it that you are not up to your usual tricks and causing mischief and mayhem ?’

The Devil looked around and said…

“Now that the world is so full of self righteous people pretending to care about issues…there is nothing left for me to do”
