Loads. The fact that I see people launching hobgoblins when attacked by npcs. The fact that I almost had a fight with an Orca user ( several times in fact ) when they started mining an asteroid I was mining. The fact that I can observe all the activity and see tractor units being used, mining drones being deployed and brought back…etc etc etc etc.

A far better question is…other than using psychic powers, what conceivable evidence do you have that anyone is AFK ? Are you using the CIA’s remote viewing team or something ?

It’s irrational to presume any inherent connection between new players and Highsec. Yes, new players start there, but any new player with a brain either leaves, goes AFK, or starts killing AFK Highsec denizens (most of whom are not new).

It was years ago, but corp mining ops and corp mission fleets were common enough that it became a good recruiting technique and litmus test. If the corp didn’t have regular ops/fleets, then it wasn’t worth your time.

Multi-boxing was just as easy then as it is now though.

The difference between then and now is that bad corps aren’t getting closed by wardecs anymore. That was the litmus test.

Paradoxically, you cater to new players by making EvE challenging and dangerous. There are lots of games which cater to carebears and losers who want an easy game. The one strength EvE has is the risk and danger, once you remove that there is no reason to choose EvE over all the other carebear options.

Personally I don’t see multiboxing as being much different to being AFK. Someone logged in 6 times is not paying attention to all 6 at the same time, even if they are quite alert.

A solo ganker using multiboxing to keep his loot recovery ship seperate from any Concord response…seems to me to be a bit beyond simply an ‘exploit’.

Not sure it’s about helping, lol. It looks more to me like the collecting of salt no matter the outcome. In the case of EVE the outcome seems to be loss of players and being known as the game with the most toxicity. I think EVE players wear that as a badge of honor by the looks of this forum. The thing is, what is all that salt going to be worth when EVE ends up being a dying game with a few hundred players? Will salt be sold on the market then? Can the Devs pay their bills in salt?

You realize its been this way for its entire life right? It used to be worse honestly. Open world PvP sandbox games aren’t for everyone. And the salt mining comes from peeps who don’t accept the reality of the game they are playing.

Plenty of players love challenge and danger, player retention isn’t hurt by those. If EVE was only a space simulator I wouldn’t play it.
What I personally think puts players off isn’t the challenge, it’s the way those challenges and dangers are delivered and the way they leave the player helpless… I think sitting duck is what it’s called. Of course that can be remedied but newer players have no clue how and the information is spread all around the world wide web. That’s problematic for a game that tries to attract a younger generation of players.

Well of course they can as part of the Borg collective of some ganker group. But are all your minions fighting for themselves…or for you ? A lot of people ( like myself ) want more in the way of solo PvP and more of a personal sense of ‘winning’. Which is much harder and requires more skills…fortunately one of my characters is close to having that. My one big regret is wasting so much skills time on mining for Cilla.

I know not everyone is like me or whatever but it honestly took me a few weeks of being intentional with my desire to learn and in no time I was killing other players and evading being killed. I intentionally messaged people that I noticed were doing things I was interested in and I would make myself useful in return for mentorship. It’s an MMO. Play it like one.

Of course you’re right. But not everyone starts a game to play it on web pages gathering info and intel and that’s where “EVE isn’t for everyone” comes into play. So, in the long run, a lack of players shouldn’t be surprising and changing the NPE wouldn’t do a bit of good for retention of the kinds of players who expect to play and not search.

Eve Online has a reputation. A reputation that I find VERY hard to be ignorant of. This game is well documented on social media, in blogs, on Twitch, and on YouTube.

If a new or prospective player finds himself unaware of the dangers then that is honestly his fault. Hell even the old promotional trailers for Eve Online talk about getting blown up, having everyone you have taken from you, and then revenge.

If I want to be a dictor pilot it takes a simple google search. If I want to learn how to run abyssals, simple google search. If I want to learn how to gatecamp or evade a gate camp, google search. If I want to learn how to mom-max my PI colonies, once again… Google.

Because of the nature of the game there’s a certain amount of responsibility that players ought to have. Can’t complain if you didn’t do your part to try.

No…I’ve watched hundreds of videos including many by Safety and by solo gankers who describe exactly what they do. I’m one of those who has read and watched all the stuff on the net.

He cites a single instance of a miner not responding when ‘bumped’ as somehow proof that all miners are AFK. CCP badly mismanaging it is definitely trying. That includes a whole lot of archaic gameplay that was probably cool back in 2005 but is disastrously bad now, as well as CCP making horrible game decisions that promote multi-boxing and themselves promoting it as well just to increase their profits. Multi-boxing can be managed and discouraged if the game design is engaging and challenging enough for 1 person playing 1 account.

I fully agree. I dislike multiboxing personally. I wish all I felt like I needed was a single account. Thing is I enjoy playing Eve Online and to truly be competitive the answer is definitely to multibox.

Unfortunately, yes, with many of the current relics from the past 18 years of game design, multi-boxing is the most direct answer to being competitive, and there is very little in the game design to discourage it.
