New class of Ship

Seeing as the Trigs are up to mischief I was thinking about how the Empires would respond.

The DPS the Trigs throw out, from such small ships, got me thinking.

Marauders. At present a bit meh, as they only tend to survive in High Sec, so…

Same Hull Bonuses as they would normally have.

But…

+1 Weapon slot. 5 weapon & 4 utilities in the highs. Pew-pew.

+1 mid slot, for tackle. Firgates are firgates.

.

Pocket Battleships. Tougher, same size, and moar deeps being both produced and actually applied.

Fittings might be tight in places, but needs must.

Just my 2p.

I don’t see the point in any of this, and all of this sound like useless additions with no purpose.

Just my 2p.

Too bad we couldn’t be like STO, and customize the way our ships look.

Hasn’t the empire already responded by figuring out how to manufacture trig ships and tech?

We already have roughly 300 ships in the game. If there is an open niche, it makes more sense to re-purpose an existing hull that isn’t getting much use.

I have. Pocket Battleships were an advancement in tech. More punch, more tank, and same kinda size. That’s what made them so scary.

Much as I agree what has the tank needed to fend off Trigs? That’s why I looked at Marauders.

I run emergents in a Loki fine. Fastest times I get for any ships I’ve tried.

Exactly, like the primae, if they could increase the planetary holds goods to 45,000 m3 this would make it useful for it’s one and only function, I know it was “given out” as a freebie but it is actually not a bad existing useful concept.

I dont think we need new ships atm. Im still trying to learn to fly the ships we already have…

Add shield based drifter ships that are just OP but expensive as a counter

I wouldn’t mind seeing a shield version of the nestor (remote rep battleship) or some kind of faction command link battleship.

A battleship that gets bonus range on smartbombs wouldn’t hurt my feelings either.

Pfft, it’s already tough for my alt running the gauntlet of SB’ing BS sitting at gates.

Guantlet huh?

Blue valkyrie needs food badly!

Direct comparisons with real world navel ship “classes” is often mis-leading. Indeed, the distinctions between “classes” in the real world can be rather tenuous.

A Pocket Battleship was a compromise to get around treaty restrictions and was largely intended as a commerce raider. In principle, heavily enough gunned to sink anything that can keep up with it, fast enough to escape anything that could threaten it.
In Eve, you could argue that Attack Battlecruisers fill a similar role.

There are new ship ideas I can think of - but any new ship should be a trade off; good at something but has weaknesses. The proposal for a tougher, higher DPS battleship isn’t wise. They would be flown to the exclusion of all other battleships because of the advantages they give.

So, what would my new ship ideas include (and I apologise for any abuses they may open - there’s not a lot of rigour in my thoughts)

A small fleet support ship for each empire. A destroyer sized hull, less DPS than a destroyer, modest bonus to remote repair, able to fit command bursts with a modest bonus but only if rigged for it. Maybe modest E-war support. Low tank but able to fit an Assault DC - gives you a chance for your fleet to rescue you. Each capability should be out performed by the specialist frigates and fitting should be tight enough you have to think about what support you offer rather than “everything”.

A set of fast gun Battleships - probably implemented as a bonus to prop-mod performance, maybe with a signature bonus reducing the MWD bloom, or a capacitor efficiency bonus. Critically this speed comes as the cost of tank - these are fast but more fragile.

A turret version of the Stealth Bomber - probably with a reduced sensor resolution to increase targeting time and a reduction to rate of fire for the two Large Turrets you can fit. Similar Alpha or DPS to a Torpedo Stealth Bomber, similar fragility. Probably no bomb launcher. The idea is a arrive, volley, retreat type operation requiring great co-ordination.

Niche ships for variety rather than “better” ships. Whatever “better” actually means. As I said, not thought through, but some ideas.

And it’s be nice if they were new hull shapes rather than re-skinned and tweaked versions of T1 shapes. But that’s art rather than gameplay.

Actually, no. Pocket Battleship is a common Term for German Armoured Cruisers that were built after WW1 but before break off WW2. What made them “scary” is that they were developped at the time where London Naval treaty have put higher restriction on Heavy Cruisers, than what Versaille Treaty Limitations were on German ones. Which resulted that German cruisers could be heavier and bring much higher firepower than treaty cruisers and only counters to them allowed for construction within treaty limits would already classify as capital ships.

You are mixing two types in here together. Yes, “pocket battleships” were intended as commerce raider, but their existance was an exploit of differentiating limits between Versaille Treaty and London Naval Treaty. Outside of being raiders they were primarily a trading card to force Naval Treaty signataries to allow germany in, thus overriding the treaty and allow construction of battleships again.

Now “Have enought firepower to kill anything that can keep up with it, and can outrun anything it doesn’t outgun” is general principle for Battlecruisers. And indeed equivalent of irl battlecruisers would be quite directly Attack Battlecruisers in the game - battleship guns on a cruiser-ish hull.

about OP’s points - I am unsure if Marauders really need buffs, Pocket Battleship niche is being filled in by combat battlecruisers imo, and none of that would be valid “response” of Empires to triglavian threat.

Now buff to Navy Issue vessels could count as such

EDIT: as for weird new ship types I’ve had idea once for an Escort Carrier - battleship sized hull that deploys 1-2 light fighter squads alongside with a couple small/medium turrets with a considerable tracking bonus.

Shield combat rr battleship armor have two to play with
Projectile drone combo only one that doesn’t exist in game.
Anti capital ability battleships based on tier 3 hulls.
Upgrades to navy line.
One would expect empires military complex would be reactionary upon another race or two entering the fray.
