New effect on skillbook : consume

ok so, since I specifically said the opposite of what you’re saying, I think you misread my proposal.

It would not increase the maximum level of skills :

As I stated, later it could open a possibility but this possibility should require a lot of work on the balance of the skills themselves (it’s obvious some skill could not work or would have too much of an impact). This idea (increasing skills past V) seems obviously linked to my proposal so I stated why it would not be possible.

it would not unlock ships or skills you can’t have :

So it would not modify the balance of the ships. That’s why I say you did not read my proposal.

atm if you are at level 4 just use an implant and you are at level 5.

eve does not need more shortcuts

There already are “boosters” to temporarily upgrade things like skills. Any extra bonus should just stay there.

And this seems really awkward. Just an example: if you consider the time to train the skill from 0 to, say, 3 to be the time you need to read the book and the time to train 4 and 5 to be the time you practice the skill. What good would another copy of the same book be? Why would I be better at playing EVE (pun intended) if I had 3 exactly identical copies of the EVE skillbook? Yes, maybe if I ate 2 of them :stuck_out_tongue:

I do understand that it might be a little frustrating when having a lot of spare skillbooks lying around. But it’s not that hard to sell them or just give them to your buddies.

… most books are under 1m even for larger ships and weapons they are under 10m

no i didn’t… most of those are under 1m or even for larger ships under 10m

and what do you know most things under 1m and very few things exciding 10m

I specifically noted that you can’t consume a skillbook if you already have skill level V.
So this would not change anything to the balance of the ships : an all-V character could not consume any skillbook.

You’re right that this could help industry. For those people who don’t have their skill maxed out.

I was more thinking of core skills that sometimes are required V for a fit that needs to be used right now, eg energy weapon rigging, advanced weap upgrade, …

Just downgrade the fit till it works without those skills? If it doesn’t work when it’s downgraded then out the effort in to get that niche fit

Here’s a novelty idea:

LEARN THE SKILLS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DID!!!

In addition to that, all alphas must buy all skillbooks over and over again because all the alpha skills decay over time until the book is gone.
Or you can just hit the subscribe button like we do for a lot longer than any alpha ever will.

It would create a lot of balancing issues.
The only way to balance this easily is to rescale the skills bonus from V to VI , so that an all-V now has the same stats as an all-VI with modification.

If this sounds like a bad idea, now you understand why it is not “interesting” nor “fun” to go over the level V skills.
That’s why I very clearly stated this idea is not in my proposal.

Please note that I only use caps now, because apparently that is how you communicate.

Here’s a counter:

IF ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS FUN, GO BACK TO WOW!

Instant gratification is for losers. And not only that, you apparently lack even the slightest hint of qualitifcation to even know what you are talking about.

Let me repeat it: Instant gratification is for losers.
Read it!

Too many children nowadays learn: I CAN HAVE ANYTHING I WANT AS LONG AS I DEMAND IT ONLY LONG ENOUGH AND THE MORE I SCREAM THE FASTER I GET IT!

This is not even not a good idea, it is a crappy idea! It does not increase fun, it increases gratification, shortens the attention span and wipes patience! It leads to people getting bored FASTER, because they get what they want FASTER and WHEN THEY WANT IT! Instead of having to actually WORK FOR IT, so they get a sense of pride and ACTUAL ACHIEVEMENT, they get:

Achievement unlocked, you found the ■■■■■■■ undock button!

sorry but I don’t feel any feeling of achievement when my level V skill is finished, be it light fighter V or adv weap upg V.
“just why did I start that skill already ?”

The only skill that I was needed to complete was covert ops V as it reduces the cloak CPU, allowing to fit T2 probing array on the anathema.

Originally, game skills were designed to let you (player) learn the game at your rate. Game skills improve the mechanism complexity, so learning one after you learnt the previous makes the player have fun discovering the game, there ware a representation of what you actually learnt as a player.
In Eve, it’s the opposite : most mechanisms are readily accessible, however the skills required to be better need time. How do you know in which skill to put SP if you can’t try that skill effect before ?

It’s not about instant gratification. It’s just that Eve “mechanism skills mechanisms” are totally the opposite of what other “fun-oriented” game do. It’s building up on frustration. It’s an “idle game” before idle games were cool.

People call it “mature”. It’s just as mature as a game that highlight dangers with green and safe places with orange/red. And that arbitrarily puts limits on the mechanisms you can use. And tells you that “using money” to have better ingame skills is the correct way to have fun. A lot of games do that. Doesn’t mean they are better.

to be fair most of us were against this too. unfortunately for everyone whales with your same need for instant gratification ensured the addition of cheat sticks.

there are plenty of games out there to get your chemical fix with little effort no need to make eve one when the players play it because we understand the thrill of working and waiting to achieve something.

you are not “working” nor “achieving” anything when you complete a skill training.

then it’s a good thing that one skill is only part of that huh?

I know you kids who have been able to always get your hands on what ever you wanted within short order find it hard to understand, but when your brain isn’t punishing you when it goes five minutes deprived of the dopamine you constantly flood it with you can appreciate the anticipation. completing AWU V isn’t anything special but it now lets you get that last bit of PG you needed for that eagle fit you have been wanting to try. and while you are out playing with that AWU has unlocked paths for you to begin training into marauders or dreadnaughts and start it all over again.

something i’m sure even you can appreciate is how dull a game is if you just start it right off putting in the god mode cheat

also this is not true at all… skills first started showing up in table top games and they were a way to pace the game and give you something to be working towards. good game design drip feeds new things to a player just as an old one begins to lose its novelty and starts to fell standard. the player will then be given time to look forward to the next tool or spell or technique before he is granted it. only in the beginning of a game are things dolled out in a way to teach mechanics and for the most part these games generally are remembered for having rather slow starts. great games let level design teach the game by giving opportunities to use and learn the mechanics of basic skill granted from the start.

WTF ? In that case the issue is the cheat, not the “start with”.

If you ever thought that having to wait for something makes that thing more interesting, you have a little issue. That only builds “frustration”, thus “relief” when the frustration ends, but this is NOT fun.
You seem proud of whipping yourself, but you being a SM (NOT Space Marine) does NOT mean this is the taste for everybody.

There are a lot of things I have fun in Eve, including :

  • sleeper caches
  • some missions
  • trying to understand the game and the relations between the game mechanisms and the players

Waiting for several days for my skill to complete is definitely none of them.
I put work in the three points I gave. I don’t always “find” something from the effort I put. Well at least I get fun.
That’s why I play Eve. Not to achieve “caldari carrier V lol”

no the problem is starting the game with everything unlocked… the cheat is general fun to play with once you have gone through a game normally.

No, in the example you give, the issue is cheating.

We are in the global context of a multiplayer game. In that context cheating is always an issue.
If you are talking about modifying the game to make a different game experience, use the term “mod” which does not imply an issue.

There is no cheating when you are playing a single-player game.

I don’t understand by which way you went from

to

you are contradicting your self.

… o.o you must be younger than i thought. Do you really not know what a ‘cheat’ is?

No read them again they are not in the least bit contradictory
