New HUD?

So apparently FC is working on a new HUD for EVE Online. I’m creating this thread to discuss some aspects of what that could be. I personally like the current HUD although I will agree that it needs work.
If anyone has a pic of that new HUD please share it here, although I expect that FC isn’t sharing it, especially if it isn’t done.

I would love to read your thoughts on that and also read about the details of a HUD you think would be better or easier to use.

I myself would love for FC to reduce the size of the text right near the middle of the screen that says ‘Warping destination…’ I think it’s too big for being almost in the middle of the screen. Anyway, one can dream, can’t they?

Now… To your keyboards, Capsuleers!

A work-in-progress version made rounds here somewhere a few months ago (April? May? During the Fanfest?). I’ll have to see if I can dig it out of my posting history unless somebody beats me to it.

In any case, it was a real improvement on the current one and I liked it. A nice clean and modern design. If they roll it out looking close to what was revealed in spring I’ll be very happy.

I think the first segment is this blog series could’ve been helped with some visual imagery (ie: a mockup).

you’d think people would learn to not trust FC that they images from the dev blog were not the new HUD

What the HUD needs the most is intuitive and adaptive UI parts.

I’ll give a few examples:

  • Dscan: Since the “result-window” doesn’t change anyway as long as I don’t hit the “Scan” button again, I’d like to set a custom timer it stays open after I scan. All I need is a quick look of whats around me, once I got that, the window should automatically fade and only leave the button available for my next scan to free up the space, aka show me whatever I placed “behind” and I’d like to see constantly.
  • Cargo: As long as I don’t want to move or use anything there, I don’t need to see it all the time. Give me a small area where I can move the cursor over and it automatically pops up, but once I move the mouse away, it fades out a few seconds later. I could still use boosters or items, but it doesn’t take space in the UI all the time.
  • Chats: Chats can also automatically free UI space by fading out once nothing happened (no one is talking) for a pre-set time. It automatically appears once I move the mouse into that area or someone sends a new message.
  • Probe scanner: Once it shows no results (because I have ignored/fitered everything available), the window should auto minimize, but once a new signature/anomaly appears or I move the mouse over the “analyze” button, the window pops up to let me use my probes or warp to the new anomaly.

I also would like to have multiple pre-sets of the UI I can save and seamlessly switch between, depending on the content I am doing or the area I am in. Including the ability to set a default UI setup for each space, for example if I jump from JSpace into HS, my UI automatically changes to my preferred HS settings. If I jump into LS or NS, it again changes to my preferred non-HS-KSpace setting…

Goddamn they should just hire me -_-

I don’t know if it was from a dev blog. I don’t remember the source. And it’s not like you can’t trust the dev blogs. I’m not as dubious as some people, no.

I like your suggestions very much, @Syzygium and yes, they should just hire you. I agree.

Now tackle the Overview @Syzygium!

All these voices online that rant about ‘leave the game alone’…

Maybe it’s true that the average eve player is a 58 years old grandpa whose only reason to live is to stop every meaningful change to this game until the end of his days…aka ‘we did this for 20 years’…

@Anna_Dyneaux Thank you for sharing the pics!

Its based on Photon UI, so you can guarantee…

  • there will be loads of excess unused space,
  • it will show less than it did before.

you are so negatively…experienced…

But this hud looks SO ugly you got eyecancer from it

All we can do is wait and see. I’d be happy if FC implements my O.P’s last paragraph.

i wish that they gave some images of the new Hud design instead of old ideas

Are you saying that the pictures posted by Anna Dyneaux in this thread are from old ideas and not representative of the new HUD?

The pictures I posted are the mockups they provided at Fanfest. It’s probable we’ll at least get something similar. No more recent pictures have yet been made available.

Things I would love to see in the new HUD:

Minimalism

Make the UI more minimalistic, let me see as much of the beautiful space and spaceships as possible even while playing with my UI turned on.

Here’s an image of my UI:

Here’s a quick AI mockup of a more minimalistic UI in the direction of what I would love to have:

In other words, get rid of all the redundant space-wasting stuff.

Just print some letters on space. No borders, no titles, no buttons, no unnecessary stuff. Minimalism and full immersion.

Efficient use of space

Probably the hardest thing to do for FCCP, considering each of their updates has made things waste more space instead of less.

Think of how you want to show information, then allow us to show maximum information in the least amount of space in a way that’s still readable and looks good.

And no, huge wasted space between info does not equal “looking good”.

Efficient use of resources

Let the UI run smooth and fast. No UI elements that take time to load, no visual loading of elements when I open it. Do some optimization.

The character window has elements that jump all over each time I open it, and it looks amateurish.

No pop-ups

Pop-ups are evil.

I do not wish to see pop-ups when I hover items. I do not wish to see pop-ups when I hover skills. I do not wish to see pop-ups block my view. I do not wish to see pop-ups when I am trying to chat, interrupting my gameplay.

If I wish to interact with something, let me (right) click it.

Talking about things interrupting me:

No unnecessary DOCKING black screen interruptions

It is not needed for anything and if I press ‘Outside view’ I don’t even get it unless I dock in an NPC station. But if I go for the cinematic interior view of structures, each time I dock and each time I undock my screen goes black and unresponsive for seconds.

A fully unresponsive game, while I’m always in the middle of trying to do something.
Doing my skills, chatting, clicking planetary industry or project discovery, searching the market or whatever it was I was doing… and I get interrupted and blocked from playing for no reason at all!.

And it happens every time I dock and every time I undock.

Please stop doing that!

Lastly,

Give my my square portrait back

Self-explanatory.

We get a square canvas to make our portrait in, stop cutting a random part away in the character window. I want to see and show the whole picture.
