People like me who bought PLEX over Russian resellers was probably a reason why they changed it as well. Because why should I almost pay double when I can just use a VPN to pay in a currency where it was way cheaper^^

Well… CCP doesn’t cares enough of the 550 millon people in the world who speak Spanish (almost 50 million of them living in a EU country), as to even localize the game to Spanish… Instead they localized it to French (and let be said, back then the lady in charge of localization was French…)

Whatever CCP takes in account, it doesn’t looks like population matters.

I see no reason why the rest of us should subsidise your subscription rate… bye

Maybe these gaming companies do something that doesnt allow it to be exploited. I dont know, but it looks like it is possible to have lower prices. SHOCKING.

There is also the small size difference, those companies can afford to eat a certain amount of reduced profits in certain regions because they more than make up for it elsewhere, CCP isn’t as lucky

Yes, they do, its called being a multinational AAA developer, they can afford to lose money on subs when they make up for it in MTX out the ass in other games

But how do you know such thing? Do they really lose money with people going to VPN service?

have you ever looked at the financial reports these companies give out at shareholder meetings? :stuck_out_tongue:

They make the vast majority of their income on MTX related sales, Over half of Activision Blizzard's $7.16 billion yearly revenue came from microtransactions | TechSpot for an example, granted its from 2018 but we all know things haven’t really changed, so yeah they can afford to make subscriptions cheaper because they make most of their money from MTX

CCP is one of the bigger independent developers/publishers in the world, without even taking the acquisition into account. They’re not AAA-sized, but their primary product alone exceeds the scope of many developers’ entire portfolios, and since games are judged on their individual profitability (e.g. a company that makes two games isn’t going to subsidize the losses from one with the profits from the other, at least not for very long), CCP is actually in a prime position to capitalize on supporting customers at different price points across the entire planet. And as mentioned before, video games (and MMOs in particular) are products with very high sunk costs, so getting your product out there and scoring extra conversions even from low payers make more financial sense than not doing it.

The reason CCP did this isn’t because they expect to make more money from Russians with this move (especially not when they’re outright pushing their product out of the affordability zone for the average Russian consumer). They’re doing it as a strategic move to shift revenue generation to Western countries. Maybe they think they can score some of our COVID stimulus cash? Or, once again, their management could just be stupid. There’s plenty of precedent for that, if you remember the $800 jeans and monocles.

Since I’m against their decision based on my understanding of economics and experience in making money from games, I hope that Russians will respond in kind by running plenty of bot farms to be able to afford to PLEX and keep playing. Nothing against CCP, and I’m against bots, but CCP fired the first shot here. Telling Russians “too bad, guess you’ll have to stop playing!” is not the way forward, in my eyes.

Now, in all fairness, I think that PLEX should have a single, unified world price.

There isnt anything about people using VPN there to get lower subs and Bliz losing money on that. Which you specifically stated takes place.

I think you’re missing the point, its not about offsetting one game with another, its about all the extra content they can sell in the same game, blizzard for example could easily afford to drop the price on overwatch because of the amount of money they can make from the loot boxes sold inside OW, the same applies to other games, if the MTX in EVE were more lucrative they could afford to lose out on a little bit of the subscription income as it would get more eyes on the part that actually makes them money

Where did “I” state anything about a VPN?

You might want to read my posts again and read the name :stuck_out_tongue:

So you didnt mean they lose money on subs, which you wrote takes place? You commented under my comment about how other companies doesnt see they are losing the money on subs, because of people using VPN.
If these companies doesnt see it, how can you see it? Are you a seer? :mage:

:crystal_ball:

In a perfect world you may have used “they are gaining less on sub than they could, instead or because of exploiters, and they accept that. It doesnt matter as much for them as for CCP, because I have data here, and their business strategy here (shows data)”.

The question that then would arise is what really would differ if the data would be similar for CCP and Bliz, that they are making more of the cash on MTX, like PLEX in EVE.

Could be the case Bliz ignores that, CCP doesnt. And then… why?

how do you afford to keep the lights on to even play EVE ?

One thousand rubbles is a lot of smashed up stuff.

That normalizes to what the rest of the world pays…

Seriously, 999 rubles is currently = to 14.22 USD, so you’re still paying a bit less…

Quit whining - Mine more.

Alternatively, Russians could make their own Space game, better than EVE. With all the stuff CCP doesnt want to do. They are good in programming and making games. It would be cheaper for everyone and without microtranshitting.
