Firstly I tried to post in PVE but it was read only.
Is it possible to build player structure in high sec space and for example set up a research station solo, or is this more regarded as a late game group thing?

Mechanically, the game will allow you to build a structure in high sec. But, it’s generally not advisable unless you have allies to help you defend it. Groups can declare war on you, which will allow them to attack you and your structure without CONCORD intervention.

No, you always need to be able to defend structures you own in New Eden, regardless of where you put them.
This is why it’s much easier to play EvE with a (large) corp or alliance. Perhaps you should try finding a corp which can already defend structures and will let you use them in exchange for help defending them or similar.

Building structures isn’t necessarily a late game thing, the medium ones are really affordable.
But it is a group thing as it can be destroyed for profit (the core) and anchoring it turns the corporation you are in war-eligible so people can legally attack it anywhere you anchor it, even in HS space. And do defend it when it’s attacked you’re going to want to have some allied players.
A solo alternative could be to take a risk and anchor it solo but in a quiet part of space, hoping it goes unnoticed and that nobody will bother it for some months. And if it does get attacked, it goes down and you try again elsewhere. Just be aware of the risks and don’t be disappointed if you need a few attempts in different parts of space until one of your strucures lives longer, I guess.
I personally don’t do anything with setting up structures or HS, and mostly use the NS structures that my alliance has placed so I have no idea what a good quiet place in HS could be, or if such spots exist at all.
Personally I’d join a group and use the structures you set up and defend as a group, or use public structures or NPC stations as solo player.

Owning a Structure in HS is not really advisable as a solo player unless you have a high Net income to replace the Structure(s) when it inevitably is destroyed.
From Zkillboard statistics the group most likely to come for your Structure would be Black Flag. Alliance or atleast they seem to be the group that are most actively destroying structures in HS for the past weeks/months.

I’ve noticed that Eve seems to be a harsh place. I would’ve loved a cloaked mini research station and play the scientific madman hermit.
