Pearl Abyss Has Sold CCP Games Back To The Studio's Leadership Team For $120M USD

Barney hasnt let it go. Hes pretty much stated in like five threads now that he will be watching accounts over 30 days old in exordium. Hes driven himself mad over all this.

Its like a splinter stuck in his mind. Hes gotten to the point of just making up ghost theories to draw some kind of fear from people…you know…the whole issue with this game right now is the fear that really isnt there.

Fearmongers are a dangerous breed indeed.

less than the 50 years you posted about.

your entire hypothetical is ridiculous.

this is the very essence of being disingenuous in a conversation. You will only keep moving the goalpost until i give up and you’ll think you’re some profound sage over it. That is ridiculous.

But, at least you’re up front with it and dont act like some of the man children on this forum that just play child games while doing the same thing as you are right here.

Your view of whales is a bit exagerated i think.

In many circles, my ceo would be considered a whale since he spends over 500 usd a month on this game. This portion extends into real life so we have to evaluate real life situations and how common it is for someone to have no problems spending $2000, $10,000 and a million dollars on a video game, apparently monthly.

Where do you imagine money comes from that it can be wasted on a video game every month and still be mega wealthy? I assume you believe all the fakebook and twitter (x) posts where people irl are stuggling but post crap online to appear wealthy. roughly 3,000 billionaires exist worldwide.

Make no mistake, to be spending a million a month on a video game, a person would need to be a billionaire and continue to be making ridiculous amounts of money that exceed the million they are spending every month on a video game. Less than 1,000 americans can even think about it. How many do you think are playing eve online, or any video games at all? just over 3000 world wide. How many do you think are playing eve online?

So less go with the least ridiculous figure. How many people do you think are spending $2,000 on plex every month? How many people do you think need 384 billion isk every month? That’s 2 titans a month from plex, according to what you assume is commonly spent every month.

CCP has shown that isk flow has dropped significantly at least the last 2 months. So where is all that plex and isk going?

I tried my best, but you didn’t get the essence how whaling works, but instantly projected it unto me.

What i described was not me setting a new value for you so you can’t reach it and be upfront with it. What i described is that the whale just swipes the credit card again and you need another 50 years to come through with your work for keeping up. Meanwhile the whale has swept the credit card maybe once more.

It is unreachable for you with normal ingame earning work. And also the “special” professions will have their difficulties keeping up with those values.

With respect to EVE i am a bit sour, but not that sour to stop playing it. The skills of the human is still what differentiates from someone who just buys their way into the game. But that is about the last thing that is unique. Everything else can just be acquired today. Long term commitment with training a character for 25 years or something is a good example. There really was no need to make skill points tradeable. Someone with lower character skills, but higher human skills could still have the upper hand in the old days.
But today you are forced to max out in the relevant areas, because everyone is just doing that. There are some examples in the media where people have just bought their way into maxing out their character completely.

What am I missing here?

You type something and are up front about how you will just keep moving the goalpost, but the meaning is not what you typed and I just dont get it?

The real question is why you think you need as much plex as a “whale”? Perhaps there is a major difference in our playstyles as I use and fit ships with minimal cost to get the job done as efficiently as I am comfortable with. I don’t bling out ships trying to compete with people I don’t know and probably have no idea I even exist.

I agree to an extent. The need came when enough years had passed and more new players kept complaining about never being able to “catch up” to other players that had already invested years into this game.

A whole lot of the complaints towards ccp are just ccp giving players what they want, even when other people say they dont need it. It’s not really up to us older players to tell newer players that they should spend 25 years training skills.

I believe this to still be true. No matter how much plex you buy or how many skill injectors you buy, you might not know about feathering. You might not know how to make your ship much much harder to probe down. You might not know how some groups use the exact same tactics in every fight, and know how to counter it.

So you’ve been playing a long time, yes? Do you know about feathering, or what it means? Do you know how to make your ship un-probable, or at least dang close?

I told you so. I only wish I knew it was going to be 50% so I could make an offer myself. I have to skate now, got a dragon to kill in Black Desert. o/

Have fun!

Many EO players are in thier twilight years, Either Retired, homebound or living in a Nursing Home. Other players have nothing in the real world. Some players view the game as thier precious possesion.

CCP has never actually owned itself. Before the Pearl Abyss sale in 2018, the “hull” of the company was owned by outside investment firms like Novator Partners and General Catalyst. Hilmar and his crew were just the pilots.

that’s a pretty damning assessment…

what “end game” ?

You’re being obtuse, not a good look on you. Whatever each person considers their “end game”, one credit card swipe can get them there.

80k plex
160 500 plex monthly pkgs…

at current market… 38 days, running 1 acct…lv4 missions

i was not being obtuse at all…
this is not star citizen…1 credit card swipe you say?!?

so what is your end game then? do you need to remortgage your house?

There are people who have a whole lot more money than sense. And they are the ones CCP is chasing.

Everybody is chasing those, not just CCP.

Everybody is chasing them right off the cliff, or have you not seen the state of mmo gaming now days? I guess if someone yells “Jump!”, CCP will.

Really? I think Pearl Abyss is better off now without the boat anchor called Eve Online. I seriously doubt you will see any policy changes as those were made by CCP and not the people who gave them bailout funds. I guess you are blaming PA for the upcoming Exodium region as well? Don’t you think they would have announced up coming changes a month ago? Go ahead and blame PA for the free alpha accounts as well. I don’t think for one minute, you will see them switch back to subscriber with a 10 day trial. Black Desert isn’t free to play, assuming PA wanted to clone their horrible monetization here, they would have a buy in price on the game, and sold you $15 monthly value packs instead of omega.

Also your math is off, they became the publisher back in 2018 or 2019? That means PA has been supporting this game for 7 or 8 years. I imagine when CCP has to pay the bills, they will sell out to another game company, and you will blame them for the state of this game.

Have fun!

This wouldn’t shock me, I think maybe Daybreak Games could buy them next. Just in the last 5 years they have purchased, Enad Global 7 for $300 million, Magic: The Gathering Online, and Palia developer Singularity 6.

No matter who assists them out of the hole in the future. The issue with anyone buying them at this point, would be the last company losing money on their buyout. I imagine it would be a complete take over of CCP, with the talent being relocated to other games, the CCP CEO skipping off with the buyout money, the few remaining in charge of this one would be a skeleton crew, and they would only profit by cutting the development cost. Then the population would wane until only the loyalists would remain here to play.

Hilmar coughed up a lot of money after showing nothing but loss from this game. I must assume he borrowed that money from somewhere. With that kind of debt, he will be looking at getting the money out of the players here or selling out to pay off his loan plus retirement funds. Remember not all of us are omega here, even some of the omegas are here plexing from others cash. I don’t believe there is enough people here to pay off that loan. Maybe they can pass the hat at the Fanfest.

Let’s not assume any company MUST buy EVE, also let’s not assume the next one if any will agree with the previous terms.

Companies are not that stupid, some are, but most investigate before acquiring. It’s a valid assumption the next possible buyer will learn one thing or two from PA.

Also, if any debt exists it will also be considered.

Reasons I can think one would want to acquire EVE:
1 - Player base;
2 - Tech;
3 - IP;

Which one do you think will make a company to step in and take the same deal PA took and let CCP do as they please, knowing how it ended for PA?

Based on released financials, there’s every indication that EVE Online itself is profitable. CCP would be profitable were it not for massive R&D expenditures on other game projects such as Vanguard and Frontier. The argument for those expenditures is that they will eventually produce returns by expanding the EVE universe to an FPS and survival/crypto/? game. Of this, I am doubtful.

One thing is certain, however. Without PA as a fallback source of funding, projects such as Vanguard and Frontier will need to start turning a profit sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I expect Vanguard at least to be jettisoned pre-launch, just like Project Legion/Nova before it. Frontier may survive because 1) development is being funded by an outside party, and 2) the game is built on Carbon, so the tech is (theoretically) portable to EVE.

I expect he did borrow funds, as well as put in his own and that of other investors, because no bank would loan $120m without the principals also having a stake. But…

That’s not how corporate financing works. I’m sure Hilmar is not personally responsible for the debt.
