Perseverance, new limited ice mining destroyer

They did is specifically because they knew someone would be here crying about it within hours, and here you are.

Should have called it Pestilence.

There are all kinds of ships produced out of thin air that you will more than likely never own, such as Alliance Tournament ships. This ship is no different…

Nah, gonna be a prime target, and unless is shats cubes with 2 mining lasers and speed bonuses, compresses, has a larger hold…there is no reason to get it, the Endurance is still my go to.

I think the OP is referencing this recent video. The guy there argues that companies are artificially driving login numbers up by exploiting FOMO instead of improving the game and that’s not sustainable long term. This new Perseverance certainly matches the pattern and CCP has been going in that direction for few years now

While I’m not specifically referencing Chris Wilson’s recent video on dark patterns in games, I have seen it and completely agree with his opinion on dark patterns.

That video is well worth a watch!

Chris is one of the founders of the game Path of Exile and he knows well what he’s talking about on this topic.

I’ve disliked the use of manipulative practices in games much longer than that video has been around though. I am disappointed to see that EVE, which has a good foundation of a game, is slowly adding more and more such dark patterns like ‘time-limited log in events’, ‘daily challenges’, ‘monthly reward tracks’ and other tricks that add zero gameplay but are purely meant to manipulate you into logging in.

I don’t like feeling manipulated. Not by people, not by games.

Even if you are consciously aware of the many manipulative tricks some games use and recognise the manipulation attempt and choose to or choose not to give in, seeing it over and over again while you try to enjoy a game really sours the gameplay experience.

A good game draws more players by adding good gameplay. A mediocre game draws players by manipulating them to play, not with good gameplay but with dark patterns.

It’s the lazy efficient and anti-consumer way of boosting player numbers.

EVE has a solid foundation of a game with a good economic cycle of ship building from scratch that CCP can build upon.

… but instead CCP grabs the bag of manipulative tricks.

And worse, with this update they start shifting their foundation of ship-building away from their own solid foundation onto one of these time-limited FOMO events.

The only thing worse than a game with a solid foundation that also uses dark patterns on the side is if it starts building the game on top of such dark patterns. That it makes the core gameplay loop depend on these dark patterns.

A time-limited event should not be the sole source of a mining ship in this game.

You must really hate supermarkets then, and there is nothing wrong with time limited events, if its not a ship you’ll use then you’re not really missing out on anything, if its a ship you want then go and earn it or buy it from someone else, this is no different from all the AT ships or any of the other ships that get released in limited quantities etc

Login incentives have been a thing for decades at this point so nothing is going to change in that regard and limited time rewards have also been a thing in this and many many other games, its no different from ranked seasonal rewards in the likes of league of legends etc

CCP is mastering the art of doing anything but making a good game and still staying in business

And I have played games for decades and have been disappointed by those manipulative attempts for decades.

It’s refreshing to play games that focus on good gameplay instead, but rare nowadays. Usually only single player games do so, but of online multiplayer games I only recall Path of Exile as being
dark-pattern free when I played it.

Since I recently saw Chris’ video I now understand why that game refreshingly skipped all those common manipulative gaming tricks.

It would be great if more games followed that example and drew players through good engaging gameplay instead.

Over the years I sadly saw EVE move the opposite direction.

It’s why I enjoy playing No Mans Sky.

There’s no micro transactions in the game, plenty to do, and now there’s new ships to build and fit out as you like.

You can search for salvage to find ship parts, and the only thing holding you back is your own imagination.

Well, this ship is supposed to be a bridge between the Endurance and a barge so…. I’ll stick with an Exhumer. It’s the top of the line ice miner. Why settle for anything else?

And with this being limited, it’ll be pretty expensive too. Not worth mining with.

This new expansion has been really hit-and miss:

Hits:

  • Pioneer and Outrider ships. Widely available, economical and fills niches.

Misses:

  • Oddyseus. 2.5B for a mining Stratios?
  • Perserverance. Locking this ship behind an event just seems so odd. Plus it’ll most likely be too expensive for what it offers since there will be a heavily limited amount (1 per player). I hope a BPO gets released after the event.

If you’re looking at the Ody and your first thought is that its a mining stratios, you’re doing it very wrong

Also a BPO is unlikely as its probably going to be a faction hull and those don’t get BPO’s

The Praxis is fairly regularly fitted with mining lasers, shield tank, and cargo expanders.

I actually think CCP’s approach here makes a lot of sense.

A limited-edition release doesn’t replace a proper production line — it complements it. These seasonal ships are a way to test interest, gather data on balance, and let players get hands-on before anything permanent enters the wider industry ecosystem. If the ship proves fun, useful, and healthy for the mining lineup, CCP can absolutely expand it into a standard blueprint path later. They’ve done that before.

The winter-event rollout also creates engagement at a time of year when New Eden traditionally quiets down. It gives industrialists something fresh to chase, and it avoids instantly flooding the market with a hull that hasn’t yet been stress-tested by the wider player base.

So instead of seeing it as “stunted,” I’d say it’s a cautious, player-driven introduction. If the community likes the ship, CCP has every reason to move it into regular industry. Until then, we get something new, something rare, and something that can still evolve based on feedback — which is exactly how new designs should enter New Eden.

You’re reading a different thing in this change than I am.

This is not a cautious way to test a new ship before releasing it properly. It is a way to test if CCP can release more ships through seasonal events.

Imagine if CCP could source new ships not through the regular evergreen core gameplay but by letting players gather enough points on their monthly track every month!

It would be a great boost to player numbers if everyone in February had to do hauling missions in order to obtain the best new freighter in the game. And in May everyone needs to explore for points to obtain the limited best exploration ship. Continue such monthly FOMO events for points all year long until you reach the December yearly ice mining event for the ice mining ship!!

That is the direction CCP is exploring.

A huge universe with lots of freedom of activities to interact with? A big sandbox game?

No, you will first have to grind your monthly points on CCP-approved activities in order to obtain this month’s reward.

And I find it terrifying.

Except those ships, as well as the whole line of SoCT ships, the Primae and Gecko Drone’s, were all given out to everybody via the Log-in rewards…

Also they were pre-made, no BPC requiring a bunch of materials to be bought in order to use them…

Gotta say I think @Gerard_Amatin has a good point on this… Personally I don’t mind the fact that it’s a limited time ship… What I do mind is it’s being released as the final reward in the Agency Event points… I think the Perseverance ship should be given out as a gift in the Log-in rewards, just like all the other limited time ships were done in the past…

If anything, have the Perseverance BPC be a random drop from Winter Nexus event sites and make the final reward in the Agency Event points be something else like a specialized Ice Mining Upgrade module, or a 5 run Ice Mining Drone BPC, etc…

I tried to stay positive about it, and maybe it’s too much to wish, but if that’s really the way CCP intends to go then, yeah, I too find it terrifying and a major bummer.

Well if it’s only rare or unique and can never be seen again, it’ll look great on a kill board

currently only available through the Winter Nexus seasonal reward track.

so, only limited , until it’s not .. calm down , Chicken Little
