The ship inventory window when in compact mode and docked in station, you cannot select the bottom item in the inventory.
There also seems to be no consistency in window controls in compact mode - some windows have the close / minimise button, some do not. Would be great to have close and minimise visible at a single click on all windows. The one window that stands out for me on this is the PI list of planets. I want to see that as little as possible at the best of times; not having a close button handy is very demoralising…
Finally, there is still the issue of minimised windows popping open when you close a full-screen UI element. I have corp/alliance chat minimised all the time - this minimisation is not recalled on first logging in, and the windows reappear every time I close out of PI planet editing, ship tree, or any other UI element that I haven’t yet set to floating.
Oh, and make all the elements default to floating instead of full screen please!
Photon is unusable for those of us with smaller screens. I’m using a 24 inch monitor which isn’t really that small but it can’t handle Photon with the extra padding all over the shop.
Since you asked to tell why we disable photon:
I play on a laptop (so small monitor) so everything is already small in the classic mode and photon + compact mode just doesn’t do a good enough job.
Main issues I have are:
fleet window with gigantic broadcast
drone window that is just horrible. It’s somehow better when non compact for unknown reasons
It is a waste of budget, time and effort that could not be better spent. Excellent.
Each of them has large unnecessary margins, and the differences and inconvenience caused by changing this UI from the current state to the current state are so unimaginative and unimaginative that it is hard to believe that they were created by someone who plays EVEonline.
If CCP has the time and love for EVE, change to this UI from the previous one and go into PVP immediately. I’m sure you’ll understand more quickly than I can explain how ””KUSO”” this UI is.
Photon UI is using more space on my screen for less information, everywhere I see empty space without any use between the icons and the so called compact mode doesnt really change that.
If I want to minimise a window, I do not want to open a submenu, I can read the names of the in game chat channels you dont have to make them so huge.
Why dont my drones fit in the same window as they did before?
Highlighting the currently selcted window is good thing as I often press V for D-scan and after the third time trying, I see that I wrote in chat.
But I will most likely miss every single new message from chat, because the chat channels are not flashing anymore until you open them. Instead they are beautifully highlighted until I accidentally hover over them which turns off the highlighting.
Overall the Photon UI might be designt to look more modern, but to me it only looks oversized and less structurated. Today when it became opt out only, everybody I know opted out nearly instantly, so please dont force us to use this as it makes everything more complicated leave it as an option for the few who like it, maybe if it improves, more people will start using it, but not in its current state.
If you want to improve something, why dont you improve the distance slider of the d-scan? It only slides to values like 5 or 10, but not to 6.7 I have to click many times on the very tiny arrow buttons which can be kind of annoying…
My first impression was that everything takes up too much space. The gaps between text, images and buttons are generally too big, wasting space that could be used for more information. Especially the overview is a complete disaster without compact mode, which helps a little.
The “autohide” function on the scrollbars is also mildly annoying. It takes a moment to let you use it, which is a moment too long. Just because it looks fancy, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Functionality should come first when designing these things and honestly I haven’t seen a single thing in Photon UI that made the game more functional. Much like the new skill window, it’s only more difficult to use for seemingly no good reason.
tl;dr
There’s absolutely no reason to use Photon UI over the old UI.
I had to disable this immediately, it just feels like taking up way too much space. Maybe it’s just because I’m still a 1920x1080 pleb…
I personally enjoy small, compact windows, without using Compact Mode. I like small clean text and the original layout was great. I also use 90% UI Scaling, and for me, the old setup is near perfect.
Photo UI made this feel like the UI was built by Fisher Price for 5 year-olds. The windows are still clean and it looks great, but if you disable Compact Mode, it’s just WAY too much. The menus in Photon UI, the color borders, the tool tips, all look great. The text feels too large and out of place, and if you have a smaller window, the text just fades out where the old UI it was small enough that it wasn’t an issue.
The windows look like they’ve combined enough of the information, instead of the window layout being on the same line as the window name, and then total m3 and search on another, it’s all just larger and takes up the same line. Great for large windows, absolutely horrendous for smaller windows. The old UI just worked better with this. Really my only complaint at this point so far. It’s been updated and looks great modernized, but then it’s totally negated by how clumsy the text and the other information is mashed in there if your window doesn’t take up a third of your screen.
I avoided using Photon because I could see from just screenshots and feed back It wouldn’t be to my liking.
This morning, it was forced on me anyway and is immediately being disabled.
There is no reason in the world I want a UI that takes up so much screen real estate yet provides less info.
Thank you for a least providing me content this a.m. though. /s
Compact mode is FANTASTIC! I cannot express enough how much more usable it makes the new UI. Please, please expand compact mode to the rest of the windows (and maybe make an option to use compact mode by default?)
The windows where I’m noticing the absence of compact mode the most:
Chat Windows (THIS IS THE BIG ONE)
Personal Assets
Contracts (the finder and the individual contract window)
Industry window
One question though: why does compact mode in the fleet window hide the “close” button? The close button should always be immediately visible, not hidden behind a submenu.
Add the close and minimize buttons to the header bar in compact mode
Let me change the brightness/impact of the “selected” state for things. The inventory window is grating to look at when trying to select specific things out of a large group of items, and I don’t like the cursor glow when using a chat window.
For anything that doesn’t implement compact mode, reduce the padding/empty space around the UI elements so it doesn’t feel like the windows are unnecessarily large. I already felt like I was drowning in UI windows sometimes and the crazy padding on everything makes the issue feel 10x worse.
