I can just see them nerfing helmets.

I agree with the OP, and it’s obvious CCP doesn’t listen since this same topic has been brought up a few times in years past.
When CCP first implemented Apparel items, they did include a few different types of headwear besides the modern Caps and Berets that are currently flooding the game.

I mean trust me, I know that apparel is the least important thing in this game but at the same time its something that helps you connect to your character a bit and stand out some (even tho we all just play as a spaceship and mechanics and gameplay are a much bigger and important topic). But something so obvious as to have cool space helmets and armor for your avatar I think is a real missed opportunity for CCP.
Like I said they could just sell them on the cash shop and I am sure people would buy them up, I know I would.

I’m sure it would require a lot of time to code it into the various pose options of the character customization portrait screen, probably a lot more time than what CCP want’s to invest.
But yeah, having helmets, armor and weapons to fit on our characters would be very cool. Then their portraits could look something like this:

Make Character Stand Out
Wear Trig Suite like any other normie.
Ok.
Contextually: when you are piloting (commanding) a ship you are in a pod: floating completely immersed in gloop with connections jacking your nervous system directly into the ship turning the ship into effectively an extension of your body.
You aren’t wearing a helmet. The clothing for your avatar is “what you would be wearing walking around a station”. It’d be like my walking around a shopping centre (mall) with a full face crash helmet or astronauts helmet on. Personally, I’ve generally slightly better fashion sense than that.
If you are after accurate “fresh from flying my ship” look what you want is “very basic disposable underwear with gloop dripping off your matted hair”. It would meet the make my character stand out objective.
