PROJECT NOVA

“We expected VR to be two to three times as big as it was, period,” Pétursson tells Destructoid . “You can’t build a business on that.”

It all falls on him. Same as with Incarna.

Ultimately it’s CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson who bears responsibility for any missteps the company makes. Former developer CCP Zinfandel even recently claimed that the Incarna pricing disaster was a direct result of Hilmar’s interference. Pétursson allegedly told Zinfandel that he “has no balls” and then multiplied all his prices by a factor of ten just before the expansion’s release.

I will risk a statement that Hilmar should have been never put into any CEO role :thinking:

All we ever really wanted (We as in the old DUST 514 community) was to have a more stable and polished DUST514 that actually ran on PC with smooth frame rates and no lag.

Thats all we really wanted, a port and polish! (Vroom vroom)

These projects are ‘pacification projects’ wherein they show some shiny new thing to pacify you.

After more than ten years, this is not being a cynic, this is being a reallist.

A cynic is what an optimist calls a realist.

I made other comments in ‘the other thread’ regarding Nova here:

Enjoy.

If they were profitable then why are Dust and Valkyrie brought down? I think that closing down profitable business is bad. Why is CCP doing this then?

Because you dont think.

Businesses are not profitable forever. If you continued to run them, you would start to lose money. So you watch the incoming funds, and outgoing funds.

It doesnt mean they weren’t profitable.

Even Hilmar said you cant build business on that. Looks it wasnt profitable enough, just like when you have to stop developing for VR and sell the people as they were standing to other company.

It’s hard to believe people on this thread actually defending CCP’s terrible business decisions over the years which even Hilmar sadly acknowledges.
So what, you’re just content now with never-ending ship skin sales and a new “Triangle People” Capital Ship??

That’s what we get after 20 years of EVE???

I haven’t logged in for months into this stagnant Universe, for that very Reason; Zero Imagination, Zero Innovation;
oh But wait Here’s a new “Triangle People” Capital Ship you can fly; Now buy PLEX at 20% off!!

I hate to say it, but I think Chris Roberts has more vision!!

He certainly doesnt have to produce many games at the same time, one is enough to take his time away. Looking at what the Citizencon teams showing what they produced under his command… amazing.

Cant say when they will make the game run smooth without crashing tho. My prophetic senses are occluded by all the snow from that snow planet.

This is what I was hoping for when we got PI in Eve, instead we still have dots on a planet years later :roll_eyes:

When Ratatti took over Dust and started making sentinels garbage, nova knives becoming tank killers and then frog legs i posted that he was sent in to kill the game.
That toon was banned from the forums. I was also banned from their twitter and face book pages.
The game wasnt all that bad before that and many was playing it until he and Frames started making it strictly flavor of the month with the constant nerf / buffing.
I know the game had a shelf life and it wasnt going to be all that long but the differnce in the game play from beta and year one past the rogue wedding debacle up until they got ahold of it told me they either didnt care enough or had no idea what they was doing.
That and ArchDuke had no idea about the lore. I mean the officer ArchDuke sent suit in his own words to me was that an amarian got hold of a min sent suit and made amarian upgrades to it.
Now why it was a Min officer suit i got no clue as it was used by the amarr and not the minmitar.
They never meant to make it continue and just the fact that Frames and Ratatti pushed the respec sells so hard right before they pulled the plug knowing that they was gonna kill the server was horrible.
They even made big swings in nefs and buffs so that respecs was a need for those that was competitive in pc and all that.
In other words if they still got Ratatti and or Frames involved dont count on a playable or fun game.
I do miss that game but the reality is that it was a good start and had promise. If done right on pc or even had it coded for continuation to next gen consoles and so on it would be awesome and add to eve.
I just dont got faith in those that had the game handed over to them as they obviously took something with promise and a very loyal cult fan base and made a mockery of what it was heading towards and what eve is about.

Could a software developer (preferably a game developer) explain why it is extremely hard to actually have FPS style ground engagements and player avatars walking around in EvE? I am curious about the technical limitations.

@Steve_Ronuken

just ignore this threads … its the normal “i want cry for somthing but have no idea” thread … close it and save your and our nerves …

you guys should just lock such “normal useless rant” threads … would be better … if they want to rant they should go to Reddit …

Because the engine isn’t built for it.
The server runs on a 1 Hz tick. The network code is based around that tick.
The engine is all built around giant (relatively) ships shooting each other in space. With collision mechanics modeled accordingly.
Not only would we need a new engine, that engine would then have to be integrated with EVE’s existing engine somehow.

I think that’s exactly what they were going with with Dust. I wonder what happened there. They never integrated Dust with the Eve client as far as I know. Even if it were Eve planetary ship lands --> loading screen --> Dust, it would be something.

Could it be that EvE is like CCP’s baby and they are wary of adding stuff to it that will shake the boat too much, with unpredictable results?

Integrating an FPS style game to EvE might effectively split the player base in two, for instance, and muck up EvE’s sandboxiness.

I wish we could hear CCP’s internal dialogue on this one.

When the Carbon framework was developed extensively in 2010, there was a group consisting of 7 people who worked on lag and such things, alongside the graphics teams who worked also on avatars and interiors technology. Looked like they did not expanded to the net code part for avatar environments and server, and were not considering it initially.

But when they would, I am sure the avatar environments would have to be upgraded to run on different net code than rest of eve, maybe even on different servers, sharing the data between them, saving progress. Sharing only messages and UI interface parts of Neocom in real time 1 s ticks, while the avatars could update locations and inventory in ticks more proper to action MMORPGs on different server, like in DUST 514. If CCP would want to expand the universe, I am sure they would find a way. Shared market was planned somewhere along the way for DUST and EVE as we got all the icons for materials, and even blueprints that stayed for years unused in EVE. The game would of course never allow you to shoot a friends ship in space with a handgun, maybe a space gun turret tho would be possible. There would be limitations. I am sure if they could add a link like shared chat to DUST, and even some actions in EVE that inflicted damage upon the battlefield in DUST, they would find a way to make EVE have avatars that shoot other avatars.

It would be great if “we could hear CCP’s internal dialogue on this one”;

Yeah I sincerely think the Glory days of Eve are behind us, and the current team are simply Caretakers with no vision for the future; They’ll stay on board as long as they are paid.

Maybe. But I think some of them are actually trying to find work somewhere else, where they could do something more than caretaking and janitoring. Where they could work on more ambitious projects somewhere else than on small, cold island far away from the rest of world.

CCP Seagul left them to work in Sweden at Unity Technologies for example.

Agreed, I still remember how energized all the players were when they saw all those Awesome ideas in earlier fanfests, those were beautiful days full of hope for Eve’s future…

Eve Legion was quite nice actually.
Project Nova is just a joke.

Stow that logical crap there. Eve is for people who care only about ISK and stats. Anything to detract from that, like actually improving and expanding the game, is forbidden. What with changes like such you suggest, you might actually bring back real breathing lively people who care about the game. Can’t have that. They need those easily addictable people who mindlessly can’t stop playing.
