Quantum Cores - Updates begin 8 September

I don’t think sunshine smells like that.

I think I’ve figured out how to solve everything. This idea will completely alter how high-sec players approach this game.

Quantum cores need to be “living” things.

Obviously not in the literal sense, but rather like a computer bot. Think old-school Tamagotchi pets. They would talk to their owners in chat, provide weather reports, and ask to be fed with fuel blocks. They would cry out in pain and plead to be protected/saved if their stations are attacked. If all someone is doing is sitting inside the citadel and spinning their ship, the quantum core it will count off the spins, and offer motivation to keep going with thoughtful, inspiring quotes. It would be like taking care of a sentient pet. Carebears, who are apparently asocial in nature (not my claim, for the record, but actually the claim of some industrial players recently active on this forum), would finally be able to have a special friend, but without all of the social commitments. The quantum core would provide much greater incentive to log into the game than merely to grind out another asteroid belt or mission chain to see the wallet become slightly fatter, and it would definitely make owning a station mean more than just another milestone of economic achievement.

A pet rock does almost the same thing? Just cheaper…

A pet rock won’t tell you “wow, dumping another load of minerals already? you’re mining like a champ, and I’m proud of you!” A pet rock won’t yell out “don’t hurt my senpai! >:(” as it tethers you when you are getting attacked.

There are so many possibilities.

CCP can even sell “skins” of sort for the attitude the quantum core will have.

This will only work if you can water your quantum core and get it to grow bigger and bigger so that you can get a bigger citadel later on. Also, it would help if you could cross-breed them by installing two cores in one citadel, with the potential for producing citadel skins.

When you haven’t talked to your core for more than three days, there should be a chance that it just shuts off your tether, or cancels industry jobs.

True, I was reaching there. But if you put it outside, it will tell you the weather!

I would say pause them, but if you forget it’s birthday, then watch out! Especially if it’s a redhead.

I would pay good money (like at least $100) for a tsundere quantum core.

“Activating self-destruct sequence. Three…two…one…Ha ha, just kidding! You thought I was really gonna do it, loser!”

“H…hey, where do you think you’re going? You promised me that you would upgrade my manufacturing time efficiency rig!”

“I’m only letting you dock just this once. Don’t get the wrong idea, idiot! It’s not like I’m letting you do it because I like you or anything…”

“Moron! What made you think that shooting the frigate with a standup cruise missile was a good idea? Let me help…”

Tentatively have to agree with Shipwreck here.

I may have misread the announcement, because structures aren’t my thing. I thought Quantum Cores just added a noticeable (but not huge) extra cost to setting up a structure, and a decent little extra drop when a structure is destroyed.

The amounts didn’t seem to be big enough to deter anyone from dropping a structure, and they don’t seem big enough to trigger a wave of structure-bashing either.

Is there a wrinkle in these cores I missed that make them a real pain? (Other than the afore-mentioned points one and two, that they’re a fix for a problem that didn’t actually exist, and the cost is harder for small players).

Eve. . . has been dying for one reason or another since I started playing nine years ago. They nerfed the hulk - eve will die. They nerfed the Drake - eve will die. They replaced POS with citadels - eve will die. I’ve looked at the changes, biggest that I see is that you can’t just have repair stations all over the place, and you have to dock instead of hanging out in the tractor beam. I guess i don’t see the big deal, here.

There will be the usual 1st wave but after that, it “should” settle down again.

Ohhhh - nvm. I just re-read the dev blog. It looks like the QCore will add 600m (or more) to the onlining cost of the structures. Zoiks. Well, this should deal with some of the abandoned structures all over the place

It looks like it will add an interesting dynamic. incentivizing structure defense, but making them that much less affordable. I’m still interested in a replacement for the small POS - the medium ones are kind of pricey for a single player outfit, and there’s nothing in between.

You and me both!

Edit; I can afford it but I still would like to see a small one.

I hadn’t looked up citadel prices in a while, so I made the wrong price comparison in my head. It looks like this makes a citadel about 50-80% more expensive to set up, and gives at least one drop when it’s destroyed that might be worth fighting over/ninja-ing/whatever.

Given the structure spam that’s occurred since citadels dropped, that doesn’t seem too out of line to me. And the potential for the core to cause fights sounds kind of interesting.

I’m somewhat biased here since I don’t citadel, so it’s obviously no impact on me. Doesn’t seem like a game-changer though.

CCP won’t admit it, but the intent of this change is to nerf shell-corping. As things were before (and will be for a few more months), a corporation could make a one-man alt corp, anchor a structure, and get full utility and benefit through standings. Hostile parties aren’t inclined to declare war on these alt corps, since they would have no live targets, and the structures themselves wouldn’t drop anything. Essentially it’s like paying 100 million to go through 3 reinforcement timers in order to get some loose ammo.

With this change, owners will either be forced into defending their structures, or maintaining war neutrality by letting them die, and giving the hostile party a reasonably-decent payout. This will also have longer-term secondary effects in the form of people being less willing to share their structures overall, which will push corporations to own their own structures.

It’s a positive change as far as addressing the relative irrelevance of wars today, but still only a stopgap measure.
