You can find a very useful EVE career chart online here: https://eve-guides.fr/images/wtd.jpg.
From a visual and infographic point of view, as a chart, it works pretty well, IMHO, but it’s not vectorised artwork so if you wanted to get it printed out as a poster (so that you could put it on your wall for example) the resolution probably be high enough.
In real life I’m a graphic designer so I thought I’d have a play around with it and create a revised *(and updated)*version in Adobe Illustrator that’ll enlarge up to any size.
I was going to do this as a fun project, mostly to give to my corporation colleagues, but I though it might be cool to share it here too, if it’s likely that it’s something that people might like to get their hands on. (Would people find a revised version of this chart useful? Desirable?)
At the moment, I’m working on the look and feel and below is a mock up of how a box on the chart might look on the final version.
The coloured indicator chevrons work and communicate well, and I like the box colours overall, however I wanted to go for a slightly flatter, softer and more rounded look and this is reflected in the radius corners, chevron shapes, Omega icon and text choice
I’d be interested in any constructive feedback that people might have.
If I’m re-creating the chart, then I probably need to look at updating the career path options at the same time because the chart linked to above was done in November 2016 and I think a fair bit has changed in the game since then.
I’m not an expert in all things EVE so if there’s any obvious corrections that you think need to be on the chart, please feel free to suggest them here.
Thanks for your help.
Rather than have any project updates for this Work in Progress *(WiP)*littered all over the thread below (which will probably grow), I’ve hidden the original post behind a shortcut (above) to make scrolling easier and added in a project update below.
I hope this makes sense.
Project Update 1 - 7 March
Project Update 1 - 7 March
Thanks to everyone who has fed back on this WiP project. The constructive criticism is genuinely appreciated. I’ll post some specific replies into the thread on specific questions or points but I wanted to place the main WiP update here.
Below is a JPG of the latest version of the revised boxes.
Some notes on what’s changed:
I’d appreciate any constructive criticism and/or feedback
1 - I picked up on the entirely correct point made by @Han_Zealot about the logicality of the colour order of the technical difficulty epaulette indicators (top left hand side of boxes).
This was just me being a bit tired (and sloppy) after (probably) working too late. LOL
2 - I’ve added in a little more vertical breathing space between the indicator sets. I’ve made the edges a little more smooth and streamlined. I’ve added in a keyline fill for when colour is not present in the indicator.
I’m leaning towards not having a keyline when there’s no colour present because it looks a bit cleaner. However when there’s just one out of three indicators present I wonder if it looks a bit lost and lonely?
3 - I’ve created an Alpha icon to potentially be applied to some career path boxes.
My thought on this was that although currently there are Omega icons on the chart to indicate things that cannot be accessed by Alpha accounts, should the chart be aiming to be slightly more inclusive (welcoming?) by suggesting things for new pilots that are fun and that help build the player community, thus also helping with player retention?
A short note on colour …
The colours for the two icons was picked up and sampled (using the brilliant Art Directors Toolkit) from this graphic that I found online:
If someone from CCP or ISD wants to give me the correct CMYK or RGB values however, I’ll update the chart accordingly to make sure that it’s 100% accurate.
4 - Using three template boxes I’ve now created several depths of box to accommodate the different amounts of text for different career stages.
The final chart won’t look like the examples on this JPG though. Just to be clear, there will definitely be arrows and connecting lines and so on. This JPG is just part of the process of getting the basic look and feel right before I start to do the layout properly.
Thanks again for the feedback so far from everyone. You’re all awesome.
Hopefully when the project is finished people will like the chart and find it useful.
Project Update 1a - 13 March
This is a bit of a mini update because I haven’t managed to do as much work on the project in the week as I’d have liked to - Sadly the result of RL work pressure. < sigh >
On the last update I did post up a JPG with some comments on it that I wanted feedback on but I didn’t any real feedback on these. It would be really helpful if people could comment, constructively, either positively or negatively on what they think, please.
to save you having to scroll, here’s the chart again…
Lastly, I did get a request from @Wadiest_Yong for a bank robber box. An example of how this might look is below.
I’m assuming that this should go in the Piracy spine right?
If people could feedback on the PDF I’d be very grateful. Thanks.
